Changsindong Area, the One of the Oldest Village in Seoul Cosmopolitan

avatar

Seoul is a city which is mixed with the old and the new.
Among those old one, I’d like to introduce Chansingdong area which was well known for the labor movement in Korean history.

During 1960-1970th, Changsindong was a center for the sewing factory. Many young age girls flew into this area to make money to support for their family. Many girls died due to the bad labor conditions.

But it was hard to say, the fast economic development in Korea would’ve been impossible without their sacrifice.

Actually the man who introduced this place to me was my American friend.
Recently he published his book when it comes to the city history of Seoul metropolitan.

In this post, I’d like show you some photos of Chansingdong area of today.

The Chansingdong area look like a place where poor people live, the hundreds of knotted cable salads from two buildings to those electric poles makes it dangerous due to overloads. Randomly left electric equipment on street, is it for the garbage collection or people just left them because they do not know what to do with them?

Interesting contrast of a metropolitan cities.
