Diciamocelo sinceramente: E' tutto molto complesso... forse in maniera eccessiva!

Carlo (@miti)

Hello everybody,

as always, everyday life offers us great food for thought and today was no exception, at least for me.
At the bottom of a supermarket checkout which, by the way, I hate doing, my ear was caught by the conversation between the person in the queue before me with the cashier. In practice, the kind employee was trying to explain to a lady, apparently about 50, that by registering on a website and entering the code affixed to the card she had just delivered to her and to which she was entitled by purchasing a specific product, she could participate in the extraction of various prizes including a cruise in the Mediterranean Sea.
The laconic response of the lady was unsettling, both for the cashier and for me: "should I take the trouble to register at a site, enter the code to hope to win a prize that will be drawn in October? No thanks, too much bother. . let the postcard be kept ".

This episode made me think a lot and all this thinking could not find Steem as a landing point: it can somehow the functioning of this blockchain make the common user (the so-called masses) to whom so much reference is made as a target of this Social, from registering and using the platform?

Time .. now everything is measured with this precious resource to the point that it can make us make decisions based only on how much it should be used to perform an action.
In a society in which the rhythms are increasingly frantic and the shortage of time has made the latter a limited resource and for this much coveted, being able to perform actions quickly and easily has become a must.

To the point that even the registration and use of a website must be subject to this equation:

SIMPLICITY + SPEED = SUCCESS

We saw it with the example I mentioned earlier, even a potential prize does not have a great attraction if it takes too long to reach it.

In all this, how does Steem stand?

Imagine having to introduce a person into Steem and having to explain basic concepts to allow him to use the platform.

  • First of all we need to start from the basics, explaining to the potential user what Steem is, the Blockchain, Decentralization and how these concepts can revolutionize the way of living a Social Media, thanks to the economic incentive deriving from the votes and the fact that potentially not there is censorship.
  • Secondly it will be necessary to explain to the interlocutor that to register, it is necessary to wait for an unspecified number of days, or to find a Sponsor that makes this process immediate; further explanation of what the sponsors are ... and we haven't even got to talk about Wallet ....
  • After having passed this initial phase, we have to face the concept of Wallet, private keys and how there are 5 of them depending on the type of operation we have to perform on the blockchain and the authorization we want to give, with different levels of security.

Imagine the face of our interlocutor .. if already the registration to a classic Social can be seen as long, where only a username and a password must be entered and at most the answer is requested by visiting the link of a confirmation email, we can only imagine how the average user can be strongly disincentive to subscribe to a Social Media where the procedure is much more complex, as well as the basic concepts to learn in order to use it.

Moreover the explanation has not yet come to an end, as other basic concepts must be explained to our aspiring user:

  • First of all the two virtual coins that distinguish the blockchain, then steem and Sbd as well as the tokens placed in stakes which are the Steem Power.
  • Then explanation of rewards, votes and voting power, resource credits, 7-day payout, curator concept, rewards percentage for the author and curators.
  • Fundamental it will then make to understand the importance to put in stake the steem in order to increase the power of vote and of the fact that to regain possession of the last ones it is necessary to make a procedure called powering down that requires 13 weeks of waiting.
  • It will also be necessary to explain that to transform the Steem into a Fiat currency (and vice versa) it will first of all have to go through an exchange where to convert steems for other more easily exchangeable cryptocurrencies and then make the further step of converting them into Fiat currency (with the whole fees increase)

With this second part of explanations our interlocutor will either have run away or will be wondering why such a complex procedure to do a simple thing: create a blog and manage it.
Who will have the courage to explain to him that the concepts to be learned are not yet finished, that there is Steem Engine, the Tribes and that soon there will be SMT, which regularly have Hard Forks, airdrops .......

Let's face it sincerely: It's all very complex ... maybe too much!

There are concepts that would be missed by most people who could be potential users of the platform and it should be emphasized that some of Steem's users themselves ignore the basic concepts of this blockchain ... and I am not talking about new entrants but also about people who have been registered for more than a year.

In essence, Steem is outside the equation I was talking about at the beginning of the article (SIMPLICITY + SPEED = SUCCESS) and perhaps we must accept the evidence that it is still too early to think of a mass diffusion of our blockchain.

The onboarding process of the masses (as defined by Steemit Inc.) will be slower than one would imagine unless they make things simpler (assuming it is possible).
Otherwise Steem (and other similar projects) will always remain products destined for market niches, which is not necessarily a bad thing ... at least in this initial phase.
Once concepts such as decentralization and blockchain will be of common knowledge and easy to learn for most people, it will be possible to think of a mass diffusion of this type of Social Media.

Even the use of Dapps supported by the blockchain, although simple in their individuality, foresees the passage from Steem for everything concerning rewards; so unless you want to monetize through their use, the problem of the complexity of the system would also arise for them.

In short, in my opinion the road is the right one and there is no doubt that our future will be based on key concepts such as decentralization and blockchain; the only unknown remains the temporal horizon with which all this will happen.

Greetings,
Carlo (@miti)
