It's Time For Me To Stand Up....

avatar

I'm writing this blog post from...

A new angle! And level...

Literally :)

So for the past few years I've been telling myself...I need a stand up desk!

I'm hardly what you would call the picture of health, and seeing that I spend the majority of my day sitting...It can be good for my long term health.

However, I didn't find the right solution for my needs....Some of the stand up desks on the market are priced more than a few mortgage payments, and others are too small to hold my multiple monitors.

Until I found this solution...

productivity

While it's a bit bulky, and does raise my entire computer a good 6 inches off my current desk...This is the money shot....

productivity

Literally, PERFECT!

I'm typing this blog from it's 'upright' position and it's extremely comfortable. The keyboard is right where I like it to be (when I place is directly in front of my monitor...) and so far my productivity hasn't suffered a bit....I'm loving it so far!

The model is the Rocelco Adjustable Desk Riser...

And as my first experience with a stand up desk, I'm impressed.

A few things I would change though....

productivity

Remember above I mentioned that I placed my keyboard in front of the monitor...It's because that slide out shelf they built in for the keyboard takes up a lot of space. So I am going to see how I can remove it completely and I did improvise to find a spot for my mouse when the desk riser is flat...

productivity

All in all though, this is pretty slick!

And heck, if it helps my health just a little bit...It's worth it!

Have you had any experience with a stand up desk?

If so, have you used a full desk or one of these desk risers?

I'm looking forward to hearing your experience with these...And now I have to re-arrange my entire office...

Wife told me it's time to ;)

I love it.

I bought a standing desk from ikea, saw them on clearance today, and it’s the best investment I’ve made for my workspace. Well, that and a nice keyboard.

Yeah I'll give this a good test and see how I like it....I still have a month to take it back.

That's cool, I like how it raises and lowers. I don't think I would like it if I had to stand all the time, looks really convenient.

Real nice Jon, I need one too. That arthritis in the back, would be less annoying if I had one of them desks. These work stations are becoming popular here in New Zealand.

Looks like a real Fordster: any color as longs as its black.

Yeah it's a little bulky, but because of that it's super sturdy

(Edited)

Hi @jongolson. After my back surgery, I purchased a VariDesk alternative for half the price. I have used it for the past 5 years. If you don't want a full desk, then the desk riser is your best bet.

I purchased a desk riser. It has numerous locking levels. I can place my keyboard on the 2nd level, or on top of the desk if it is in full, stand-up position.

Here's a link if anyone wants to see the alternatives to the VariDesk:

Looks great and yes it is supposed to improve health, so I've heard. Sitting is the new smoking which makes me mad since I still smoke & I sit at the computer alot. I'm sure the little bit of walking I do while smoking doesn't even come close to helping but at least it's some walking :-)

A big reason why will help you quit. :) I smoked for years and then my first son was born 18 years ago....Never picked up a cigarette again

my son is almost 28 and I am sorry to say that his mom, my ex-wife, didn't even quit when she was pregnant with him. I have only quit smoking when in the hospital or couldn't breath. Not sure I can really quit but I have cut it way down. Used to smoke over a pack a day sometimes and now I'm averaging about 5 cigs a day.

This looks like a great set up! I bet it will help you so much & it will be easier for you to move around, etc. while you are working, too. (I saw an example of that at the #SportsNerds show tonight lol.)

As I said to you earlier, I am so tiny I can just stand at my kitchen table and use my laptop as if it were a standing desk! LOL! But in all seriousness, you are taking great steps toward better health. Good for you!! :)

Good on you Jon!

I have one at the office and I feel it makes me much more productive. To help with my feet, I bought some very cheap foam mats to stand on.

Sadly, I telework more than I'm at the office, so I spend more time sitting than standing.

That looks great Jon, now you just mount that on a treadmill and start walking while working and typing too, the inventor of Linux did that,

stay awesome.

Very nice desk. And yes, After reading the articles at https://www.health.harvard.edu/ about the benefits of standing while working I've realized that I need such a desk. I've made it on my own following the DIY guide at https://gostanding.org/. I've decided to construct it on my own because I've decided that it will cost less than buying it at the shop. I have made the desk with sitting-standing change options. When you want to sit you can easily transform your desk to sitting position and return to a standing position at any time.

After using such a desk for less than a year I forgot about back pain and problems with posture. I recommend everyone to use it.
