My Dreams Of Being A Purple Cow

avatar

Jon the Marketer!

Look out...I'm here to sell you something!

Or am I honest, to goodness...Trying to add value to your life and journey?

I like to think...I'm adding value :)

You see, a customer to me is very special...

They have put their trust in my business to deliver a product or service to them...Which will help them, deliver value or save them time and money...Whatever the reason, I'm honored that they have chosen my business to invest their hard earned money into...

I remember reading Purple Cow by Seth Godin years ago. It changed how I thought of marketing in general and business overall. If you are unfamiliar with this classic, the main idea is this...Everyone looks past a herd of cows...But no one will look past a purple cow in that herd. Be the purple cow, stick out from the nose and the average!

Sounds good, but how?

I remember when I first started doing business online, I invested in a company that provided me with a service. I signed up and started enjoying the benefits.

Around a week later, I opened up my mail box and I received a letter from the company thanking me for my business.

I was blown away!

This small company took the time to (albeit it...type) a letter to me and send it, thanking me for my business. I was hooked!

First, I stayed with the company for years and years...Raved about them and even became one of their top tier affiliates.

But more importantly...

I kinda 'borrowed their idea'...

Every few days, I look over my customer list, new customers and old...And start writing thank you letters to them...

It starts with some really good writing paper and a fairly decent pen...I actually learned this from reading a business book (and I can't remember the name of it to save my life)...Where the author suggested that you spend the extra on great quality writing paper.

On top of that, he said buy a pen that goes with the paper...

So I'm no paper and pen connoisseur...But I love writing on it and with it.

Next comes the fun part...

Writing a quick, and personal note to the customer.

This isn't War & Peace, just a note to let them know I appreciate them and their business.

As you can see, I also include a business card...In this case, a little bit of Steem propaganda ;)

I'm off to the post office :)

I know there are tons of services out there that can send these letters for me, and even write them as well...But there is something unique about a personal touch. And I love doing this!

So it's my small little way to be...A Purple Cow!

I've been sending thank you notes for years and it's something that is SUPER cheap to do but shows your customers that you care. And that they are valued...And in today's day and age of social media and digital lifestyles...A little letter in the mail goes a long way.

Try it out for yourself, I think it'll change your business for life!

I wonder if I can apply that same method to score some referrals for crypto projects... sounds like it could work.

Just sell something you can stand by and put the effort in you will get some bites for sure. Look at crypto nick on YouTube with the bit connect thing, people will buy anything we just need to be certain we sell something they can believe in!

I've seen some tokens on the steem-engine marketplace about referring people... Do you earn anything with these "steem propaganda" pieces?

I agree they work very well. I remember getting one from you many many years ago for the first purchase I made from you. Do not remember what I bought but I do remember getting the note.

Yeah man, don't get me wrong..I love the old system we used...But there is something special about hand written notes.

For sure, hand written adds personality and a "I cared enough to write you the note" feel. Really great initiative!

Hard work is always rewarded, and being able to slog it out against the odds is what makes normal people eventually be successful ones for sure. Nice input!

not to mention helping to keep Canada Post in business. I go to the post office so often, my sister-in-law messages me to let me know she's put something in the mail. If not, it would be weeks before I see it.

Yeah, Post offices around the world are surely getting a huge dent in them thanks to new more efficient technologies.

Here in Portugal not even privatization did much for those... still struggling to keep in business and in a bit of a bad spot. Nobody buys stamps anymore :P

I got one of those letters from you a few years ago I believe it's from when I purchased a bunch of vault keys when I owned Traffic at the Races. Even so it's one of my favorite possessions. Yes I read purple cow you might have even sent it to me. And I've been doing my best to stick out from the crowd for years . SR_00879.JPG

By the way, if you haven't read the book you simply must!

Jon, this is one of those oldie but goodie ideas that are just timeless. I got a note from you from the old CTP that I kept and about 18 months ago added to my dart board. LOL

If I get one from you for CTP V2.0 I doubt it ever ends up on the dart board.

The purple cow is a good book, and if you like that one I recommend "Brandwashed", "Living Without a Boss" and "Rich Dad Poor Dad".

Cheers and bst wishes!

My life changed after 'How to Master the Art of Selling' by Tom Hopkins (IIRC?).

I note reading that George H.W. Bush wrote a thank you note to everyone he ever met.

Personal attention will never be automated.

Thanks!

I remember several years ago receiving a post card from the TE Guy.
I was via sendoutcards.
Makes one feel appreciated.
And I just thought brilliant, that is customer retention there.

@jongolson, Relationship, Respect, Respond and Appreciation always hold great effect because 1 is investing something into 1 and if we follow 1=1 then it can build strong foundations.

As many goods and services are continually commoditized, being the purple cow and different is the only way to separate from the others. Great job!

You have a way with your writing and talking as only is typical to you @jongolson and you are an inspiration. Just the type of content that gets the target - Bulls-eye!

I have the Purple Cow book YOU sent me on my coffee table. It has been read a couple of times & for me, it's a great refresher in how to proceed with marketing & in business in general. Even though I may already stick out from the rest (lol), I like to add value for viewers/subscribers & am constantly brainstorming ideas on how to keep it fresh & different.

Purple Cow is a book everyone should read, imho. It gives people permission to be their authentic selves. And that's the reason we are all here, right?

The thank you notes are a super nice touch. It makes customers feel valued & appreciated. They know they aren't just a number. This will gain loyalty as well. There are so many ways one can do this, too!

Great post! And once the HF21 calms down, I might actually be able to upvote it as well lol. I will keep trying! Blessings, my friend! ❤️🙏
