It was my first power up and I just powered up the 3 Hive I had since coming back since it forked off from that other platform we don't talk about. Is it recommended to power up every first of the month even if you have less than the minimum, or just save it for next month?

This is not mandatory actually, just an event for every first day of the month to power up at least 10 Hive to get a Hivebuzz badge and you can be added to a drawing to get some other goodies!
Something like the Steem Power Up challenge if you saw it on the other blockchain.
So maybe you want to save for the next month next time if you wanna join the party!
