Spread The Vibes - Drum & Bass Version

Spread The Vibes Challenge

Last week, I was tagged in a post by @edje, a music industry guru who is very much in to Techno and clubbing, bringing decades of experience with him to the Music Community on PeakD and often leaving comments that end up longer than my posts! So I guess I'll just write a 10,000 word post and give him another challenge to write a longer comment haha! Just kidding, music vibes only!

The aim of the challenge is to listen in to the piece or pieces of music that have been shared with you and you share your reaction to how the music made you feel before sharing your music. The full guidelines of the challenge are to post:

  • Your reaction to the music that was shared with you
  • Your music selection and related story
  • Your invites of other HIVE members
  • Link to the post you react to
  • Post Tags has - to include #spreadthevibes #music
  • Post Community - any community you like.

Reaction To The Shared Music

As I'm typing this post, I'm actually tuned in to one of the 3 Techno sets that Mr Edje shared with us. This is the XLR8R Podcast 430 by Etapp Kyle and although Techno isn't normally a genre I'd settle down and listen to given that my main love is Drum & Bass, I have to say, I'm really enjoying the deep vibes in the tunes that are mixed in too:

I'm not too strong on genre convention outside of the drum & bass realm but I'd say the basslines of Techno with the minimal sounds and atmospheric pads that crept in to the above mix really gripped me and had me in a trance. Sometimes with electronic music, things can get repetitive if not done properly and you can lose the interest of your audience. This is something I learned from being a part of a few record labels who taught me to always have something that changes after a certain amount of bars in the music.

However, the vibes in this mix are hypnotic and the long progressions are not something I mind at all. I think you do have to be in the right frame of mind to listen in to an hour long (or longer) set of music but when it's done properly, being a DJ and creating a long mix is an art in itself and you can create a wonderful journey yourself.

My Music Selection(s)

I have to go right back to my own discovery of Drum & Bass after hearing the Bass, Breaks & Beats mix by DJ Hype blasted out by my brother back in 2003-4. This was my first experience of DnB and as soon as I heard the fast pace and high energy beats, I was hooked! These were sounds I'd never heard before, big basslines, some raw sounds but all intertwined in a 80 minute mix (maybe less, you could only have 80 minutes max on CDs back then)!

So I went in to my local town at some point that summer, popped in to Virgin Megastore and went on a shopping spree in the Drum & Bass mix session and found a mix that would transform my brain into some superspeedway of bass, smooth vibes and liquid sounds. I am of course, talking about Hospital Mix 4 mixed by Cyantific from Hospital Records. This features some iconic tunes from London Elektricity, High Contrast, Q Project, Logistics, Danny Byrd, Cyantific and Syncopix around 2005.

From this, I went on to buy Hospital Mixes 1-3, Weapons of Mass Creation and when I was at Uni doing my first course back in 2005-2008, I ended up downloading various liquid drum & bass mixes, some recorded live at events and wishing I was there partying with others. The scene has changed since with the genre going down the more commercial pop, speed garage route but I fully get that DnB is looking for a commercial presence, rather than remaining in the underground.

But I do like the underground myself! In the last 3-4 years, I had been one half of the Platform Project that aimed to showcase underground drum and bass producers along with some of the more well known tunes to give them a platform to grow. In some shows, the artists we featured went on to get signed by labels and propelled their careers - we'd like to think we had some part in spreading the word!

We may revive the Platform Project later in 2021 but we are taking a break for the moment so we can come back stronger, recharged and give you some even better mixes if we do return.

One thing is for sure, this pandemic can definitely do one and at the end of 2020/beginning of 2021, I put together a mix called "To Better Days". This is a 30 minute mix of some of my tunes that I felt are the most positive, melodic and high energy ones I have made to hopefully give us that push we need to get through. Here it is for you to enjoy if you wanted to really complete your drum & bass fix!

Invitations

I'd love to invite anyone who wants to join in really but going to invite fellow dnb heads @beautifulbullies @trucklife-family @vibeof100monkeys I know on PeakD and anyone else reading this on my blog, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!

Now, hopefully my music PC will be back in action, this is like some form of torture not being able to work on music projects or DJ mixes, listening to that Hospital Mix 4 again is properly taking me back - we need to rave again once this is all over!

Take care

Nicky

Yey, @nickyhavey , super response to @edje's post. I am listening to To Better Days, and music and that photo ARE inviting my feet to the beach. 😎😇🎶

I hope you can recover your music from your PC :)

Thanks a lot man! It took some time but hope it was worth the wait 😃 I am looking forward to getting back to the beach again and hopefully one day we can all have a beach party listening to all kinds of music like some sort of beach music festival!

I hope so too man - I'd be heartbroken if I lost that. I do keep back ups but I was ready to send 4 new tracks off to the mastering studio before things went wrong. Hoping the I.T. guy I know can work some magic!

Hi @nickyhavey

Sounds everything great in a sentence that contains: beach, music, party, festival 🎶👍

Fingers crossed 🤞 for I.T. guy's magical power ☺️

Btw, you say to me man just because you use that word when you speak to someone in informal way, or you think that I am a man? 😋

Just asking because you are not the only one who called me today that way, so I am a bit concerned about my appearance 😆

Haha, sorry, yeah I do say "man" quite a lot to everyone. I even said it at the weekend when I was walking with my female friend so don't worry! It's a habit of mine 😄

Even when the profile picture is a tree or something, still say "man" haha!

Haha,I know :) It was just strange today someone other thought I was male. So your man came like : oh noooooo, I need to change my profile picture 🤣

Hahaha! Ah man... I mean... woman... That's going to take some rewiring to not say "man" to you 😄

You should do a post saying "Stop calling me man, man!" 😁

Hahahaah, no, I am fine. I have had different names already. I will start from yours

Man, woman,🤣 then miss mipiano, Lady piano, smartypants 🙄 , tio (spanish... like if you would say bro) Gabs, but 99% is mipiano :)

Hahaha!! Love it Mipiano man, woman, tio! It's amazing the number of nicknames you can pick up! I think I gave someone 10 nicknames before 😃! I even call my brother my own nickname he gave me... which he responds to!! Everyone calls me Havey, but I call him Havey and people are like:

"I thought you were Havey"...
"No, he's also Havey"...
"wait...what?"
"It's better to just accept it than to question it"

😆

🤣
I wanted to ask why... but I will not question it then :)

I had the same nickname shared with my sister. Our parents called us half my name half her name, so when we did something bad they just needed to call that one mixed name :D

😆 You can ask why but there isn't an answer for it because we don't know how that happened!

Haha! I'm guessing your parents used that mixed name quite often then? 😜

Haha! I'm guessing your parents used that mixed name quite often then?

We had our first computer when I was maybe 6 or 7... oric atmos 64 hahahhh, I think you are a lot younger, so I am not sure you know what is that ... So my sis and me both wanted to play on it, she was older, she pushed me, I fell and my two front teeth fell out hahaha

But I was sort of restless by myself also.. I poured paint thinner into my eyes, ate soap, broke my arm, the following year my leg. I suppose I became more calm when I started with piano and from then it was sitting and practising :D

Oh TIO! Jeez! That sounds so painful but very familiar to the fights me and my brother got in on the Windows 95 and PlayStation games. It took an intervention and that was him moving to the other end of the country to go to university 😁 we're ok now...civilised... Ahem...

Wowo! You really needed something to save you from yourself hey! Music had the same effect for me, it was my happy place. Still is! Now it's great we can share everything we make with the world through the Internet and being on HIVE

Haha sorry for distracting you tonight 😁 I've heard 3speak is another Hive site, a bit like YouTube where you can share videos! I've not used that one either - there's so many places to share and hang out in here, it's awesome!

Thanks mate! Yeah I'm usually pretty good at backing everything up as I did just have a repair done to that music PC but would be really annoyed if it's unrecoverable! Hoping that my PC expert can sort it all out and we can forget this episode ever happened haha!

Believe me, there will be a big explosion of new music being shared an released so that it's forever on Spotify and the blockchain haha!

I'm trying not to lose my patience with the PC at the moment. Every day that I don't have it is making me more twitchy lol!

As promised on Twitter, this post was waiting for a comment from my side; Got out of bed early this morning to attend to my backlog :) You selected a perfect one from my post to comment on. Not only Etapp is a super DJ and producer, but he does with me what he did with you. The atmosphere he creates is one that is almost impossible to not get sucked in. Ok, ok, that counts for me, since I love this particular style of Techno. I do understand, for others who are not too much into this style, one may need to be in the right state of mind to appreciate it and to flow with the music. Whenever I hear such music in a club, I by default am in that state. But also when listening at home. But I must admit, I don't listen to techno to often at home. And when I listen, its more like the Lanoche kinda sets, or Etapp's chill out sets.

Owwww, I do like your D&B selection! Listened to parts of it and will definitely listen to the whole thing, bookmarked and all and will explore more from Hospital Records. I must say, this mix is more approachable than the occasions I listened (and tried to dance to) D&B, at side rooms when a Techno event (or something like that) was happening in the main room. Somehow I love the fast sound of D&B, but was never able to dance to it for long :) Maybe not even for a short bit of time....soooo fast! I'm a noob concerning D&B so have no idea about the artists and the variety in the genre itself. But, will figure this out along the way :)

As you say: Such a shame D&B is finding its more commercial routes. Usually, the underground side of a music genre or style is what I like more as well. With Techno the same happened. It's totally mass market today resulting in a lot of bad productions, and even more bad DJ sets. The advantage of not being in the underground anymore is for the artists of the genre. They earn higher fees when performing.

Super you are on the path (and in the 'business') to provide the underground side of D&B a platform. Artists need a way into the professional world. With so many artists around, so many productions created, it is very hard to stand out in the crowd.

You made it 😃

I loved that Etapp set you shared - those deep vibes that let you dance purely to the rhythm and bass - beautiful! I actually found it therapeutic and wrote a couple of blogs in that set so if you have any more of that Deep Chill Techno sounds, fire me a link! Great for concentration and focus for me!

You'd definitely like the older Hospital Records sounds I think. Those were soulful liquid funk vibes that you can chill to or dance too. I much prefer these sounds vs the in your face style jump-up and neuro - seems we're in to the same atmosphere of music, just at different tempos haha!

It's a shame to hear that about Techno too but I think these things happen in cycles and things will pivot back to how they were, maybe not for a while though! I understand why these genres tried "mainstream" out - the bills need to be paid and it can be more lucrative going for mass market but I'll stick to what I like :)

Yeah I've been in and out of the radio shows for the last few years and we were often trending in Mixcloud charts for a week with our Drum & Bass shows (getting between 600-2,000 plays in those weeks) but it was definitely a labour of love over anything else. All about the music for us and if we liked it, we played it! Nothing more technical than that haha! Maybe we'll restart again later in the year, we'll see!

I'll be digging into the early D&B when I get a bit of time to do so. Hopefully, I can take some days of work in springtime and gives me some room. In the meantime, I'll collect some link for you on the deep-techno-with-style. How wonderful Etapp's set is therapeutic for you. It's for me too. But not for when I work, but for when I can spend 100% of my focus, ie in a club, at a festival or even at home doing nothing other than listening to the sounds. On such occasions, I'm one with the music, which is very much like the mental state of meditation. Spending some more time in such a state revives me completely. Any negatives is turned to positives again and feel fresh to conquer live again, That's why I so much miss the festivals and club nights. They are not only fun for me, but also therapeutic.

I think it's a true testament to the music if it can be on in the background when you're working but you can also dance to it when in the right environment in a night club. I have it with liquid dnb but sometimes, when the vibes are so good, you can't work and you do then become at one with the music, feeling its vibrations and frequencies going right through you! I'm right there with you man, when all troubles go away, you live in that one moment with everyone else around you and it's only about the music.
