Enjoying Creek Water and the Tropics π΄ #APART
I've mentioned here a couple of times that I miss the beach and snorkeling and to add to that there's another type of water that I've missed. Around here we call it "black" or "brown" water. The water isn't really black though; it's actually brown; but when you look at it from above it looks black and it's usually very cold. Don't ask me why; haven't done research about the chemical compounds or reactions of the water and why it looks the way it is. π
But back to this "black" water. I'm actually referring to creeks that flow through our districts, where the former plantations used to be. These creeks were in colonial times a way to transport sugar canes, wood, coffee, etc. to the capital city Paramaribo. In those times it was easier to transport goods via water, because there weren't many roads and if there were they were hard to travel through. Especially the plantations Mijnhoop and Valkenburg in the district Para. These creeks also flow through some of our Indigenous and Maroon villages.
Well, a couple of weekends ago I had the opportunity to get purple nails after more than a year, because of how the cold the water is. The last time that I went swimming in these creeks was in January 2020, because of all the lockdowns, the closing of recreational places and social distancing. So when I had gotten asked if I wanted to join I took the chance.
The place we've visited is Da Kaboere resort and it's located in or near the Indigenous village Powakka in the district Para. It was amazing, feeling that cold black water and even if I got cold, I stayed as long as I could in the water, because I knew how much I've missed it in the warm months last year. And it was funny how I played with my temperature: when I got hot from the sun, I went into the water and worked up an appetite, got out and sat in the sun for a bit to warm up, ate, rested a bit and started that process again. It was a true outing and a day to rest mentally π.
Interesting little history on those creeks. Sounds like you had a good time. I can imagine how great it felt to be there again. π
Ah yes it did... That's what we live and work for right? To enjoy ourselves and to be able to go on trips like these.

πYes. I love outdoor trips and after all the lockdowns, out is the place to be. Lol! Looking forward to normalcy.
Yes, me too and looking forward to travel again. Sigh...
Oh yes. π

tokens.Cool looking place to chillax. So you actually get into the water? Any fish or crocodile in there? π Looks like a healing spot for sure. cool historian, keep on teaching us.
Oh it was indeed a stress free trip and yes we did get to swim. I don't have any pictures of us in this creek though, because everyone was more focused in swimming and relaxing. There are probably fish, but luckily I didn't feel them and I think with a lot of people in the vicinity we scared them away. I also think that there are caimans but only in the night and also won't come out if there are a lot of people, so during the day people are safe.

Awesome post, great story and the amazing visuals. I felt like I was there through your story. Thanks @tanjakolader for allowing us to experience it through your story.
Was my pleasure and do hope everyone will eventually get the chance to do this again/someday.

That's some black water!
Hahahaa you should definitely try out these creeks if you're ever in the region.
Have you ever tried swimming in cold water during winter? I know in the Netherlands there's a tradition to take a dive into the cold water in January.

Oh noo..i wanna reach my eternal sunshine π...f..Winter!π€£
Hahahaha I know what you mean. Snow is fun, but not for an entire season I guess π
...and definitely not after 40 seasons π
Nah, as a child i really enjoyed winter..doing all kinds of winter
sports...but also back then i preferred the summer...
And now, more than ever.
Because I haven't experienced snow yet that I would like to one time. I've only experienced hail once; was the end of summer and the start of fall in Europe.
Yes, i overstand π
π
It is very cold. Before I went to Sabana park with @rafaelchan and @faustofraser. I feel like I am standing in a frozen lake. But after I get use to it. Have a good time there.
It was indeed very cold, so that's why when my fingernails got purple and couldn't stand the cold anymore, I got out and sat with a t-shirt in the sun to get back on a normal temperature π .

.Looks like a magical place. We've only got experience the blackwater once, travel costs and logistics are a nightmare here. I've called several resorts, but even the cheapest ones can be quite expensive. We've got a friend a with a cabin at Sabana Park which we could potentially stay the weekend for free, but the transport to and fro is the biggest problem.
Yeah, in Suriname public transportation is not the most reliable and taxis are pretty steep. But hope you guys get to enjoy a few more places though before you leave.
