Market Friday | Clarks in Jamaica and White Rose Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee

avatar

It's here!

The second edition of Clarks in Jamaica with the full story was published just this April. This is a beautiful looking book, updated from the first edition in 2012, with lots of extra anecdotes and deep dives into Jamaican fashion and music.

From the first arrival of Clarks in Jamaica in the early 1920s through stories of pilgrimages to the Quaker firm in Street in Somerset and Clarks as contraband imported in coffins from Florida, to fashion icons like the mesh marina and diamond socks, it's all here!

The photographs, quotations and stories are really lush.

These days, [Clarks] are worn by politicians. In his election campaign in 2020, Andrew Holness, the country’s prime minister, conspicuously wore Clarks, holding them in the air at public appearances. Source

You can get your copy of Clarks in Jamaica directly from the publisher One Love Books using PayPal (who knows, maybe you can pay in crypto) or at an Amazon store near you: ISBN-13 : 978-0956777393. It's on my wishlist!

Meanwhile ...

I've been enjoying Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee supplied by White Rose Coffee Roasters (Hive's very own @c0ff33a).

In 1953, the Jamaican Government created the Coffee Industry Board (CIB) of Jamaica, a regulatory body established to protect the quality of Jamaican coffee. Jamaica was the first country in the world to establish a defined geographical location designated to a specific coffee brand, similar to that constructed by the French wine industry with the creation of the AOC (Appellation Origine Controlle). Many people believe Blue Mountain Coffee is the best in the world - I had to try it. White Rose Coffee Roasters offer 250g packs now, just right for home consumption. I also have to say White Rose has the fairest price available, that I've been able to find, in the UK. I also know that it was freshly roasted and ground immediately before it was sent to me (each pack is date marked). The aroma was heavenly!

It does have a very mellow taste, perfect with Fox's Golden Crunch Creams. I've noticed that my coffee consumption has increased since I received this pack. I have a cup nearly every day (it used to be, maybe, two or three times a week) and some days, like today, I enjoy a second cup.

Hmm, maybe I'd better put my next order in ...

I even saw the first Clarks book here in Japan a few years ago. still have a pair of clarks though it is more the new era ones. Blue mountain coffee, they know how to keep the tase by roasting grounding then sending. That is where you get the real taste. Very informative post. enjoy the coffee and the weekend..hmmm never tried those Golden crunch creams... Looks like my kinda thing though 😁

Yeah, I'm going to look for the book in a shop before I buy 😁. It's very beautiful, but I would like to see it first. I notice that the first edition is selling for something like five times the cover price so maybe I could get it as an heirloom 😂. Now, just stay away from the Fox's Golden Crunch Creams, they're not a habit you want to get!

I have no idea why Clarks are so popular in Jamaica, but, it is. I know they have been the most popular shoe there since the 1950s, which makes sense because of their relationship with Britain. What a great story! :))

I am so jealous that you get @c0ff33a !! I am not sure if he will ship to the US, but, I will check it. Anyone who has had it loves it! Thanks for the review of it! Thanks so much for supporting #MarketFriday!

I love coming with you when you bring us places. Your posts are always first-rate, with awesome pictures and a well-written commentary! I appreciate your efforts. I sent a little something extra to your wallet for such an awesome post.

I want to thank you for taking the time and effort to post in the #MarketFriday challenge. It is wonderful to see new faces and many of the same faces every week. It has been interesting to see the different cultures surrounding this weekly event. Different cultures. I will always be fascinated by it.

I am sure it is a challenge to try to submit something fresh, or different and I understand not wanting to go into crowded spaces. It is outright crazy that #MarketFriday has survived the pandemic. I just think it is the can-do attitude of all the people. Thank you! Through all of this, we have discovered that we have added a new dimension to the tag. As many have been staying closer to home, we have also discovered more and more about each other, and that has been pretty nice. I have to admit, with the platform broken into different communities and tags, we get to see the same people, more or less that join every week, so we get to know each other a little bit. The challenge points out our differences, but, then, it also shows many things our cultures share. When the day is done, it shows off how human we all are and how we basically all care about our families and others. We embrace each other as humans.
This experience is so heartwarming. I appreciate the love and support given to #MarketFriday! Your participation adds a piece of your world, and I have to say, people are interested in is seeing it. This entire challenge has opened up the world to me and so many others. Thank you again for being a part of all this! I am so happy to see you here! I hope you have a fabulous day! Hive on!!

Hello @dswigle thank you for the lovely comment and for the lovely community that is Market Friday. It has always been one of my favourites (although I am a dilettante poster) 😁. So good to see it has survived COVID, although I appreciate the need for a vacation after supporting it for so long! I musy organise myself a little better with links and comments, but thank you anyway for persevering with all of us who don't quite get to dot the "i"s and cross the "t"s. Have a lovely week (beautiful fridge by the way) 😍

Your support does not go unnoticed. I also realize it is one of the challenges that demand a little work to get a post together, so it is hard to consistently post in it for people.

I was getting terrible with getting to the comments in a timely manner, but, after about eight weeks of only upvoting and reposting them with no comments, it has given me a new me. It was terrible working through Covid and I just needed the destress moment or three. :))

Thanks again for being part of #MarketFriday!

Although we have Clarks in the USA, it's not necessarily a popular brand, so I'd never even heard of these shoes until I visited Jamaica. Some things Jamaicans make more their own than the country it came from, and I think Clarks and Guiness are two of those things.
