When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Or grab tequila and salt, and throw a party.
But when your garden gives you hot peppers, you make hot sauce! And that's exactly what I did.

If you live in or originate from the Caribbean or surroundings, making some hot sauce or chutney from peppers/chilies at one point in your life, is something you can't avoid. It can be as simple as chopping your peppers and adding some salt, or as complex as letting it ferment for 3 weeks, adding mango, garlic, vinegar, and many other fresh flavorful ingredients. Some recipes also require extra steps like straining the mix to get just the juices. We also have people from Indonesian decent who make their "sambal" in different ways.

I decided to go with a more simple approach this time. So armed with some red and yellow peppers from my plants, cloves of garlic, an onion and a lime I approached my food processor, which was bought primarily for this reason. You pretty much just throw everything in there bit by bit and let the processor do it's work. I like to remove the seeds from the peppers/chilies, but that is not needed. I also added sea salt and sugar for the taste. Salt and something sour-like like vinegar or citrus fruits are always good ingredients to increase preservation time.

And this is the end result. This is the third batch I've made since I started growing peppers. It goes with almost everything, but is especially good with Indian food I've heard. It's not much but it is fulfilling and does save me some money on spice I guess.

What about you? Have you ever made your own spicy hot sauce? And what do you put in it?

Thank you for stopping by. 🙃

No, not at all, I just do what I do without timing or calculation. But it was a nice surprise.

Those smaller yellow ones look like scotch bonnet? Yo know I have never made pepper sauce, well I was never a pepper fan but I'd like to create my own sauce one day 😅. Mangos? Now that sounds like a winning ingredient.

Good eye, they are a variety of scotch bonnet yes. So are the short red ones. The taller yellow ones are a variety of 'madame jeanette' and the larger red ones habanero. I had more of each for this batch, but I forgot to take a before picture, so I fabricated something with the leftovers. 😅

Lol, never made your own sauce. Some would say that's blasphemy. Well, at least now you know it's pretty simple. All you need is peppers, salt and (optional) sugar, and something acidic like vinegar or lime/lemon juice for preservation.

Oh yeah, with mangos we'd be more in Indian chutney territory, which is also an awesome spicy condiment. If you're ever in T&T, Guyana or Suriname (those come to mind right now), you're gonna come by some eventually.
