Namaskaar / Hello to all hive members, I hope you all are doing great and having fun in your life and enjoying with your loved ones.

I am back here with a new post that is The Real meaning of fasting(Vrat) In India🧘‍♂️

Fasting in Hinduism indicates the denial of the physical needs of the body for the sake of spiritual gains. According to the scriptures, fasting helps create an atonement with the Absolute by establishing a harmonious relationship between the body and the soul. This is thought to be imperative for the well-being of a human being as it nourishes both his/her physical and spiritual demands.

Fasting is a spiritual practice that is seen in many faiths. By definition Fasting means to willingly restrict food or water intake for a certain amount amount of time that can be for a day or more then a week it all depends what is the purpose of it. It is said many saints haven't eaten anything from many year and they still survive.

Some peoples consider fasting to also include abstaining from certain activities. There are so many different types of fasts and different reasons why peoples fast weather it will for health, spirituality or discipline.

The Sanskrit word for fasting is Upvass. Literally talented "up" means "near" and "vass" means "to stay" so upvass means stay near the Lord.

Up + vass= near + to stay
Upvass= stay near the Lord

There are so many ways to spiritually enlighten yourself and become closer with God, so one may wonder what is fasting have to do with it?
well in Hinduism food is divided into three categories -

  • Sattvic
  • Rajasic
  • Tamsic

Sattvic- Sattvic food are pure and nurturing to the body and mind and that also include fruits, veggies, dairy and grains.

Rajasic- Rajasic food create unrest in your mind and include spicy food, garlic and onion.

Tamsic- Tamsic food are said to cause negative thoughts and decrease spirituality advancement. These food include meat, fish, eggs and stale food.

The ideal diet in Hinduism is a sattvic diet , and this is why at Hindu temples or festivals or ceremonies are lac to-vegetation and have no onion and garlic.
While people may not always observe the sattvic diet, they try to do so on holy days in order to meditate better and closer with the divine.

Sattvic food is preferred in fasting days a lot it is meant to be quick and easy to prepare, so people can spend less time cooking and more time meditating. These food include Milk, fruits and nuts.

Fasting allows us to have more control over our senses and balance the mind.
so, fasting in Hinduism is meant to be like a detox for body and mind.
There different different diets for every specific God in Hinduism.

Also Remember, in Hinduism, God resides within us. so we should not torture God by subjecting our bodies to harmful practices. God doesn't demand fasting and doesn't gain anything from us starving ourselves.
Fasting is something we do for our own benefit and only if we are able to.

Thanks a lot fro being here, Let me know what you think all about this.

Great post. I wish you success in this project and I appreciate the information you share with all of us.

I've heard about fasting before for different purposes, as you have mentioned before but I had no idea of how food is categorized in Hinduism. I finish my day by learning something new again thanks to your post.

Thanks a lot for sharing.

Thanks for sharing this post @bhattg
Fasting is very old tradition in many religions and they all observe it different. Some people will not have food at all and other May give up certain type of feed or grain for a a certain period.
It’s also proven scientifically that occasional fasting is actually good for health as well.
