My Review about book On My Skin

"And so instead of abandoning myself to despair, I opted for active melancholy, to the extent that energy allows me, in other words I preferred the melancholy that hopes, that aspires and that seeks to that other that, gloomy and stagnant , despair." (Van Gogh). In the words of Pietro Vaghi we see the same melancholy full of hope.

Choosing to believe that things can change and trying to become the engine of change means learning, at your own expense, to grow up. Not without going through the storm. Because pain always comes in suddenly and never leaves us time to act, foreseeing the consequences. Pain always walks one step ahead of us. For this reason, to rebuild it is necessary to take a step back, to move away, to stop to take a run, enough space to deceive fears by making them believe they are giving them ground and advantage.

This is Stefano's 'unscheduled' strategy, the protagonist of Pietro Vaghi's first novel. A strategy that involves the sacrifice of those who learn to deal with their own wounds, with feelings of guilt, with inadequacy and with all the upsets that life carries with it in the moments that matter. But there is no mountain that cannot be climbed by identifying its beginning and starting from the bottom. Thus, between anger and euphoria, between the bitterness of reality and the serenity of one's projections, between ups and downs on a swing thrown in the run, someone will always arrive who will grab us, make us slow down, allow us to put feet on the ground helping us to regain stability and center of gravity.

The silent strength of the family; the simple and unquestionable truths that only the brothers know how to tell; friendships capable of distracting us from ourselves to bring us back to us; the love that comes from pain, from listening and sharing and the merciful and moved love of God, these are the essential raw materials for those who begin to build on the debris of fears that are overcome together, standing up, shoulder to shoulder shoulder like the first two cards of a castle. While everything is being swept away by the sudden tsunamis of life, there are people who are trees, remain firmly rooted in the ground and will be ready to grab us to save us. They are the names that we will always carry tattooed on the walls of the heart. You cannot be strong for others for too long, sooner or later the time comes when you have to learn to be strong with others and thanks to them.

Pietro Vaghi's debut in writing is the profound, angry, moving and confident story of a boy - like many, like everyone, like us - who learns firsthand the meaning of forgiveness, the need for hope, the overcoming of fears, the beauty of life, even when it hurts. Because the meaning of our journey is all in the journey, because there is no road that cannot be crossed with the right company, because it is the summit of the mountain that reveals breathtaking views and above all because every new beginning, every new dawn, yes always hides behind the darkest night.

And its light amazes us and always amazes us. 'Written on my skin' is the diary of a journey, a passage to come into the world, to the light, in fact. Stefano will become an adult learning to distinguish who and what to let go of and to whom and what it is worth binding forever, because those are anchors of salvation. A capacity that is called maturity and which underlies the responsibility of freedom.
