How Could He Not Know That?

We had all come to take portions for farming because the airport authority had permitted locals from the surrounding communities to come in and cultivate the large expanse of land the government allocated to them. That landed property was large and the portion which the Federal Airport Authority had used in erecting structures was lesser compared to the size of the property. We all had come to take our portions there for farming.

The reason the authorities allowed farmers to use the property for farming was to help in controlling the bush in the property and to also keep away wild animals. It is customary the where an airport is situated should be clear of tall trees and thick bushes.

There was this elderly man who came along to take a portion for his own farm. We all started out on our farming adventure and grew our crops.

There are certain expectations which are natural from people of certain age. From a country like Nigeria where most of us had grown under our ancestral parents who were mainly farmers, one would expect that an average person of the age of that man should know something about farming and crop production.

It would be expected that he should know what fertilizer is and its usage. I became shocked one day when he saw me applying fertilizer to my crops and then asked if salt is also applied to crops.

That was a great surprise to me. How could he imagine that the white granulated substance I was applying was a salt? Why couldn't he know that it’s fertilizer that is usually applied that way to crops? Real surprise!

Many times we messed up before people, especially the younger ones when we perform or responded in a manner so demeaning than they expect. It is good that we build up ourselves both knowledgeable and socially so that we won't be covered with shame where we suppose to shine out gloriously. Let us endevour to put ourselves in the class where we are expected.
