Success comes with perseverance

I recently had a very interesting discussion with a friend regarding the concept of success. For him success is synonym to have a lot of money, a great car and to own a dreamhouse. We realized that our concepts of success where somewhat different. In the end everybody has his own idea about what he wants to achieve in life. Therefore there are many concepts that are all valid about what success can be or represent.

How to achieve success?

There are already enough books that will teach you what success is and how to achieve it. I believe there are no simple tools for success. The only way to reach success is to persevere. What do I mean by that? To become successfull in whatever field that you want, you need to become a master in this field. To become a real master you need to practise 10'000 hours. This is true for anything you do. It is true if you are a trader. It is true if you are a content producer. It is true if you are a sportsman. Success only comes with real proficiency in your field. If you have success in another way then it's not because you were good, it's because you were lucky!

Why is the rule of 10'000 hours so important?

To understand why this rule is so important and why it's teachings are true, you need to know how your brain works.

  • When our brain learns something new, it has to work very much. Our conscious self has to learn how to deal with it. It requires a lot of concentration and energy. With every repetition that you do of this new apprenticeship, the effort will be a little bit smaler and you will need less concentration.
  • As a master of a field, your conscious self doesn't have to think at all. The whole process has been delegated to your subconscious mind who does all the work on autopilote. The subconscious mind uses all the experiences from your huge experience database and works out the best possible solution. The big difference is that the subconscious mind only needs a fraction of the energy of the conscious mind and frees the conscious mind to be able to do something else alltogether.

The greater your master, the longer your experience, the more efficient you will become and the more place will be available to learn new stuff.

This is why the rule of 10'000 hours is true and so imporant. If you want success in life, you need to become a master and you need to practise for years to come. At the same time you should always add new knowledge to broaden your database of experiences.

To be successfull you need to persevere, to never give up and to always continue learning...

I agree completely! As much as we want, there is no EASY button that we can become Master in any of the fields of business/life...

It looks awesome when Neo in Matrix learn kung-fu in a few seconds, but that is just a movie... :)

Thanks a lot for your comment. You are totally right, there is no easy button anywhere and I believe that to accept this is actually the first step towards success. The real success needs work, experience and perseverance to achieve. Once you accept that there is no shortcut, you are free to start your journey...

10,000 may be an average. For some people, maybe 3,000 hours, for others, 40,000.

10,000 hours, are 27 hours a day in one year. So, you need at least 3-5 years of practice.

I think that true mastery can't be accomplished over night. According to the field you are working in it can take several years to achieve it.

I have to agree, you reminded me of the old phrase: "Success consists of 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration." Well, there can be no good idea, no matter how great it may be, that it can bear fruit without that a firm work and serious effort for its development be invested.

Thanks a lot for your comment. Having a good idea is great but if you don't do the work to transform this idea into reality, the idea will stay just an idea... The more experience and mastery you have, the easier it will be to do this and succeed in what we are doing.

Dear @happyvoter, @achim03

Your friend vision of success is obviously quite common and I would say ... very shallow. However just like you said - we all have our own visions of what we want to achieve in life.

My impression is, that people who actually do not have vision for their future and their lives - those are the ones giving similar answers to your friend. Typical: wife, car, house, kids. Just like majority of population has been "programmed".

Upvoted already :)

Hi Piotr,
Thanks a lot for this comment and for the upvote;-). I can't help but notice how many people around me are programmed as you say. When even their targets in life are not their own, how are their lives anything but shallow...

Best regards,
Achim
