Not every post can be a masterpiece - how I deal with writer's block

avatar

No inspiration today2.png

If you are in content creation you certainly have these days, when you seem to have no idea what to write about.

Well I have a day like that. I probably used all my creativity on the secret project I'm working on so that my idea potential has been completely used for today.

I remember that some time ago, I found a post of somebody who didn't know what to write about and I gave him the advice to write about not knowing what to write about (what a great idea :-)). If you are in content creation, you will sooner or later be confronted with what people call the writer's block. It's an interesting subject where people can learn how you deal with the situation. So today I decided to follow my own advice and write about that.

How do I deal with writer's block?

I've realized that when I had written good posts (in my own opinion) during the previous days, I tended to put myself under more pressure to keep the same level. That's often the reason why I have the feeling that my ideas are not interesting enough and I struggle to come up with the necessary inspiration for a post.

In such situations, the most important of all is to tell myself that not every post can be a masterpiece and that I should be happy with an average post for once.

Here several strategies that sometimes work for me:

Asking for help

Today I had the idea to write a little post on noise.cash about my „problem“ and I got really some nice answers. Thanks a lot to @thatgermandude, @onealfa, @katerinaramm, @wiseagent, @Hykss, @cmmemes and @rarej for their kind attempts to help me to find a subject to write about. How great are these people! I've actually written down some of their suggestions on my list of ideas for further posts :-). By the way it's a good idea to have such a list.

In a way asking other people for help can be a solution but I think every person has his own interests and some things that he likes to write about and others that he doesn't. For example I almost never look at price charts. I try to blend the price variations of currencies out. My philosophy is to hold and accumulate.

For other people the whole fun of crypto is in trading. I totally understand that but I let these people write about it. It's simply not my turf. This is just an example to illustrate that asking for ideas may not always be the best solution.

Looking for inspiration

This often helps me in such situations. I go through my hive feed and look at the posts of other people. I might get some inspiration like that. In addition to that I often learn new stuff.

I totally went away from traditional social media. I don't remember when I last checked my Twitter, Facebook or Instagram account. For me the Hive feed is the thing that works best. However it can also be a newspaper, a book, a documentary, a film or whatever works for you.

Switch off the computer and get some air

This is the solution that works best for me. I switch off the computer, put on my running shoes and I go into the forest. I'm a very slow runner and I enjoy thinking while I'm running. That's how I get the best ideas.

The other moment that I get ideas is during the night but I don't like it because I need to get up to write things down, otherwise I can't go back to sleep. In the morning I've plenty of ideas but I'm lacking sleep,

When no inspiration comes, then maybe it's better not to write at all

This is something that I have to accept. There are these days when nothing works. Often it's the days where your head is in a kind of fog and you don't manage to bring two clever thoughts together. On such days, I simply skip my writing. When I force myself to produce something on these days I'm often quite unhappy with the result.

Do you have other strategies to deal with such situations?

It has happened to me several times ..
Inspiration does not just visit us whenever we want, sometimes it takes a break and then so should we.
Our activity is creative and we need to have a clear head to write a blog post.
I often felt I could not write anything worthy, so I just did not write a post .. other times I preferred to upload one of my photographs with some of my random thoughts - most of the times, writing what I wanted to hear myself :)
I also wrote about it a few days ago, maybe you can find the post or its responses useful!

I also tend to simply not write if I have no ideas. However I've set some ambitious goals for myself and I want to reach them :-). I will glady have a look at your post and thanks a lot for your suggestions on noise.cash. I appreciate :-)

Hello @achim03
This happens to everyone.
Particularly there are topics that we prefer more than others, but there are techniques for writing that work for some and not for others.
Excellent topic, you gave me an idea to write, hahaha.
Have a great day!
Best regards.

with over 400 posts

That's quite impressive. In the past I was writing about 1 post per week. With lockdowns and such I'm trying to go with one post a day but it's more difficult to find inspiration :-)

I completely agree. Usually I just take some time off like go for a walk, read something online or play some games. This is why I am looking forward to the new microblogging. Less words means I can just write something there instead.

I agree with you, it's not everybody's cup of tea to write 400 word posts. It will be great to have the possibility to do both!

Switch off the computer and get some air

What sorcery is this? How do you even acquire the discipline to turn of the computer. Teach me your ways. :)

But I do have that I take random walks around the house or yard and then suddenly random ideas come to me, so I understand the process.

For me the screen has too many distractions. A telegram message, a discord dm, a noise post... It's difficult to concentrate lol. Switching the machine off is the only thing that helps sometimes :-). Thanks for stopping by!

True. But it gets old fast. I remember the first 3 months of working from home and not having to go anywhere where awesome, but now they somehow feel draining. But it won't be forever, so we have to be patient.

I believe that when it comes to writing posts, we are all concerned by it? But of course this is only my personal opinion. Thanks for stopping by.

Sure it affects us all and your post is not junk, which is why I didn't drop a downvote. It's just not the kind of content I want to find in a (specialized) financial community. Besides, it leaves you with the impression that this kind of content is also welcome here. From my perspective, this should be avoided at all costs.

I appreciate your feed-back and I understand your point. I will try to be more precise in the future and avoid posting this type of content on leofinance.

Interestingly , I have similar methodology mentioned in this post

I rely on my Notepad and now concentrating on some specific topic for each day of week in advance.

That's a good strategy. I have a notepad as well but the ideas sometimes don't seem so good a day or two later lol. Thanks for stopping by!

I have missed this post somehow... :)
Like everyone else, I got my ideas for content when I go to bed to sleep... lol... So, I open my eyes and write them down on my phone... If not, I forget about them...

Also, it's a good strategy to do some kind of series for a certain day in a week, so you don't have to think a lot about the topic... I do that with different reports, goals posts, etc...

It's hard to do different topics, especially if you want to do DAILY content... I was doing that the past year and it was very, very exhausting... This year, I'm doing a bit differently... Maybe it's less quality (personal opinion), but it is still fresh content...

I think sometimes it's simply not possible to come up with quality stuff every day. Writing things down helps a lot... I switch my phone off during the night, so I use pen and paper but I have to get out of bedroom not to wake my wife and by doing that I often wake the whole family lol. Thanks for sharing your experience.
