Magic the Gathering: Reserved List Cards vs Crypto!

avatar

After waiting for literally years, I am getting a little overwhelmed with the daily crypto price hikes.

Everything is going up, be it the major coins or that shit-coin, DogeCoin that is surprising me and managing to retain its value.

I, for one, have been dumping, at least a portion of my portfolio, which fortunately is not 99% HIVE.

...'shhhhh, don't say it too loud, but HIVE is also going up'...

Magic the Gathering cards seem to have something in common with crypto; they are also going through the roof, but not all of them.

The Reserved List cards are the Holy Grail for collectors and speculators, and being in the status of 'never printed or re-printed again' is making them a target.

Let’s face it, you can’t play Magic: The Gathering in your local game shop with the geeks due to COVID-19.

Similarly, the Pro-Tours have all been cancelled, and so theoretically the demand for Standard, Modern, Legacy, Pauper, and Vintage should be very low.

...'Aegis of the Meek has always been a shit-card and now sells for more than it's apparent value'...

You might think that nobody wants bits of cardboard with all the hard times people are going through, losing their jobs, and forced to visit food banks to keep going.

But no.., they are buying up the Reserved List, and I mean ALL of it, even the worst of the shit-cards are making moves above $1 each.

Do you see my comparison with DogeCoin now?

...'people are paying big money for some of the more desirable Reserved List cards'...

This is persuading me to place more cards on sale, and they are selling. A Tolarian Academy sold for £115 yesterday and today a Tithe for £25.

I am now trying to sell a Grim Monolithfor £245 but so far have had no bites. The card is only going to increase in value and is a Legacy staple.

Is it too late to invest in Reserved List cards?

Every day I see another terrible card (in terms of power and stats) gain some ridiculous percentage increase. A lot of it is market manipulation. The thing is, it is working and people are buying them. I bought some SpankChain in early 2018, similarly caught up in a wave of hype and bullshit but unlike SPANK you can be assured no more of these 'terrible cards' will ever be printed.

It might not mean you can sell your 'Implements of Sacrifice’ or ‘Dwarven Pony’ for those prices, but over the coming weeks, I don’t see the prices falling to what they once were.

There are still a few under 50c, and these are the ones to pick up if you can find any. I would suggest grabbing any under 75c, the more the better to save on shipping costs.

Fallen Empires was one of the worst sets ever made (besides Homelands), and there is nothing to persuade me these cards that are now selling will ever see play.

image.png
...'I will sell Conch Horns all day for for $15, how many do you want?'...

They are being bought simply because they are deemed as scarce. They are not as scarce as you may think but I will quite gladly sell into all the craziness and hype. I heard stories that Wizards of the Coast printed so many of this set that they were forced to use landfills to bury cases of them. How much of this is the truth, I will never know. It's old memories from 1995 stuck in my head.

image.png
...'until very recently I would have recommended Merchant Ship as a buy. It's from Arabian Nights, is on the reserved list and unloved. Unless you live in Europe you have probably missed the er... boat.. (sorry!)'...

If you want true scarce, restrict your purchases to the reserved list cards from Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Legends, Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited. These cards no longer come cheap. I think the speculators have wised up.

Pro-Tours? Pro-Tours? Are you telling me there are people who get paid to travel around playing Magic The Gathering? (insert shock emoji here)

I knew there were professional video games players but didn't realise there were professional card game players - out side poker etc. of course.

Are there Pro Pokemon players too?

Shows how much I know. I had to google the correct spelling having typed Pokoman originally! 😂

If they did this now you could guarantee a nice large dose of COVID. Never played PokeMon, apart from once years ago with my daughter. There didn't appear to be much skill needed.

There was big money to be made.., it's all been suspended.

Blimey. I had no idea.

Did people play with their own cards or all have the same packs?

Did you ever play in one?

That depends on the type of tournament. There are restrictions on what cards you can use for 'standard' for example... which is the last 3 or 4 sets. I am out of date with current rules.

I played a few in Arizona, but not here. I was all so wild west then, and now its predictable and stodgy + everyone now uses net decks (pre-made decks copied from the internet).

Ooooo. How very flash of you! 😂

I can see how "predictable and stodgy" wouldn't suit.

Can still vividly remember buying packs of AN and Antiquities at the local shop at an insane premium ... dawn of magic era. Have torn the old house apart looking for them to avail, but even then I knew someday they would be insanely valuable.

You are right, they are insanely valuable. Arabian Nights sealed are through the roof.. opened are still great.

Wow, that is pretty awesome that you are seeing such a great return on them. I really do wish I had gotten into the game more when I was a kid. I imagine my parents would have thought it was evil though since it deals with magic and stuff. Who knows. I feel like most of my alts are just slowly crawling along. Gaining value yes, but not enough to make it worth dumping any of them.
