I was walking by the bus station one day and a very handsome personable young man (in a long duster coat, it's true, so vaguely preacher-like), jumped out and catching me with an intense stare, asked me if I was happy, child? Apart from being old enough to be his grandmother, I asked whether I looked unhappy. He seemed taken aback, but I thought it was a reasonable question.
