WAX Blockchain: Changes to deal with high network traffic

There were some changes and concerns I have towards the World Asset Exchange (WAX) block chain since my WAX overview post. As a result of a large increase of users, they have made a few different changes to the block chain. I still think WAX is a great block chain and it is trying to adapt to the large amount of new users but I think people should be aware of these issues. In fact there was a post earlier today where I found out that WAX had become the most used Dapp yesterday.

Changes to WAX

There are two main things that have changed since my post: CPU fluctuations and Captchas. I think the primary reason why is because of Alien Worlds and how its popularity exploded after the TLM Bridge with Binance started. Also the recent NFT crazes from collections such as Topps MLB and Captom's Street Fighters collection have added more fuel on the people creating accounts over at WAX.

CPU

wax network resources 4-12.png
I think this is probably the biggest reason why people are finding the network unstable. If you did not understand, WAX is able to change the amount of CPU you get per staked WAX. So you can take a look above and see what my staked CPU was 2 weeks ago before the network started being so congested. As you can see, I have 377.64 ms for my 8.18 WAX staked WAX which translates to 46.16 ms per WAX staked 2 weeks ago.

Now you can see my current CPU based on relatively the same amount of staked CPU. It has went up by a small amount since I have claimed some of my voting rewards after setting a proxy. So given the math, I get about 9.507 ms per WAX staked today. This means we now require about 4.85 times more WAX to do the same amount of actions 2 weeks ago. All of the resource data I found was found on bloks.io and I understand that the number fluctuates quite a bit so it maybe the rate is better or worst than what I have here.

Captchas

wax transaction request.png
Nobody really likes captchas and now every action to the network requires a captcha. It may become a necessary evil though to ensure things work properly in the meantime. It was created to fight against the bots that are using the network and has ensured that they can handle the stress for all the users. Only the login screens where they verify your usernames do not. I have heard that using a Desktop WAX Wallet like anchor can help you avoid the issues but I already have most things staked directly to my cloud Wallet Account. So I don't want to change it.

Another issue that I tend to get after doing like 30 transactions in a relatively small amount of time is the automated queries error. It generally resolves itself if I let it go idle for 1 hour but it means I can't do anything with the network in the meantime. This doesn't seem to change even if I were to stake more WAX so it might have to be my ISP instead.

Conclusion

These issues have put huge stress on the WAX block chain as they struggle to deal with the amount of new users. Now I wonder whether or not HIVE can handle a large influx of new users?

Will these new users have similar issues as WAX when it comes to HP (for resource credits) similar to how CPU is required for WAX. Will captchas be implemented to filter out bots? I think it is best to figure out possible solutions before they become an issue.

Please feel free to leave a comment if you read my post. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer.

I really have not done much with my WAX account. To be truthful I just don't know much about it. Tried out that planet mining thing on the Alien Worlds game, but I am too busy commenting to have much time for anything else!

Let's just say you could do 6-7 hours of continuous mining in Alien Worlds 2 weeks ago but now you can only do a little over 1 hour of mining in Alien Worlds now before maxing out your CPU and having to wait for it regenerate over time.

In a way, its similar to how HP is used to get Resource credits in HIVE. It is the same as making comments, votes and posts all cost 5 times as much RCs per action. They did so because they could not handle the increased traffic and also added captchas on top.

Thanks for the info. I know EOSIO has a similar system but I didn't know it was based on the RC mana.

huge headache with this with https://wax.alcor.exchange

Now I wonder whether or not HIVE can handle a large influx of new users?

it cant, hive is just another scam like steem, power down and just buy BTC or regret it

hive has 0 plans for this but @leofinance does have plans to handle 100m people

but neither can

hive will break like steem and freeze up at $8

anarchists always loose

I have been using Alcor a lot to get WAX since I think it has a lot of potential. I just don't like what they are currently doing to handle the new users. I don't think they are able to scale up as fast as I thought they would since they are centralized.

I think I have heard that HIVE can currently handle 10x the traffic but its all stimulated and not in reality. And I don't think it is a LeoFinance problem but more of a HIVE problem. It is just a front-end so everything is done on HIVE. But who knows what will happen if we hit the limit since we have never really reached it yet.

I'm in Wax and Alien Worlds all day (when I'm not in Hive or fighting with defi nonsense). I haven't experienced any of this yet so thanks for the heads up.

Your welcome. I did find out one advantage to this recently by reading some chats in the discord. Apparently your voting rewards will go up because people will be staking more to the network.

I think this is one of the prices you have to pay for those free transactions that we are so used to here on Hive. If we do get more users over here, we could start to see some issues. I have a feeling they are already working on some fixes for it. I try to split stuff between my .waa account and my .wam account. When I do sales, I pretty much always use my .waa account because things just work faster with Anchor and I have a bunch more WAX staked over on that account than I do on my cloud wallet account.

Yea I am debating about it but it would probably mean I would have to unstake and move things over to ensure everything works out.

I get that. I just finished up the RPlanet land sale. It went very smoothly with the whitelist.

Does this involve some of the new Aether/X tokens on Alcor? I haven't been keeping up with the news as much but Aether price is starting to drop down too.

Aether is up for me. Guess I don't really pay attention though. It's all part of the Rplanet ecosystem.
