First Look at dCity after 3rd Edition Cards Release

avatar

On the eve of my departure last week I noticed the new interface of dCity was online and checked the date.

Yep, it looked the right date to have 3rd edition cards released too. Unfortunately, I had about a minute to look around so I didn't see much.

Now that I'm back and playing catch up, I remembered to check out dCity today.

I was mostly dormant the last few weeks on my city, allowing SIM to pile up, even though taxes slashed and continue to cut most of the daily SIM income. We don't even have to bother too much about disasters, riots, pandemics and such, taxes do a much better job, and there's not much we can do to fight them.

But, apart from this nagging element of the dCity economy, we have quite a few improvements which I remarked with the new interface and the novelties introduced with the 3rd edition cards: combined cards (which can also be uncombined, unlike Splinterlands cards, for example), loading and unloading for special cards and the two additional tech tree branches for economy and health.

The UI is not even fully released (still disabled Info, Stats and Explorer tabs), but it shows considerable improvement, in my opinion. With a few constants (like the city map), I believe the entire UI has been redesigned and more features added. But something I really appreciate is the speed optimization, probably accomplished through a better resource management.

What puzzled me at first glance - and I saw in the discord it wasn't just me - was the 70% 'luxury tax' I have on my city:

The explanations given in discord related to this luxury tax is that it is set for the Hive rewards for cities with no income.

Now, if we are talking about SIM income, my city definitely produces SIM income, although taxes reduce it seriously.

So, I'm not really sure how to interpret this. Or how to mitigate it.

As far as I know from previous communications, this attempt to combat no-income cities receiving Hive rewards based on population ranking shouldn't be active yet. But when it will (if it isn't), it better have no glitches. Players are not very happy when it comes to the taxes topic as it is.

My city saw some action today after quite some time. Loading artists into the ad agency, unlocking a tech from the new branches, creating a few combined cards (and getting ready to combine others), I even needed more population to fill in the job offers - it's been a while since I had this issue.

Maybe this big update will be the catalyst for another exciting period for playing dCity. Hopefully taxes won't ruin everything.

Game has some depth to it now, combination of cards to build a better building, loading up cizs into buildings for bonuses, new tech, new global disasters with possible prevention cards makes it a little more time consuming but to me a little more fun.

Yup, I agree, another layer of variables to make it more interesting. I also like that the combination of cards is not final and they can be uncombined, if you want to change the strategy.

Agree with this... Other things are irrelevant because of a huge tax...

Personally, I don't like UI.. There are too many details on 1 page, and I think that is super confusing for newbies... It is better to keep it as simple as possible... But, that is just my opinion...

Like you, I didn't have time to dive deeper, but I will have to... :)

Hmm, not sure dCity is a game for someone who doesn't handle a little complexity. It is a numbers game after all. But maybe the dashboard should have been broken in two pages, and keep one of them as a basic and simple overview.

Yeah, that was exactly what I was thinking... breaking into more pages...

I know that it is a kind of "math game", but you can present those numbers to be sexier, and more appealing for wider audience... :)

Well, I can't argue with that, lol.

I agree with your comments on the UI.

I enjoyed when it was simple.

The new UI is a huge turn off to me and other people I know.

Maybe it'll become easier after a short adaptation period.

I know, the best thing would have been if no adaptation was required. But the entire interface was practically redone.

While I'm ok with a more complex UI as more layers are built on the game, I can understand why enough players prefer a simple interface.

I never went any further than step 1 with my dCity, which has about 100 citizens lol. Tax put me off totally, so I gave up trying to work out what I need to be doing to make it grow further. It looks promising and people who understand the math promote it but I have not been great at math and also don't like to spend my Hive on it as a result lol.

Yeah, I understand you. I started playing it very late as well, way past the very profitable phase. But I still like to poke around every once in a while. I only reinvest my SIM income now, but I did make a considerable Hive investment at the beginning, for a Hive game, one that is only beaten by Splinterlands in my case.

Great plans and great progress!!

Just not today. Today we all got hit by a pandemic, and 90% of the cities ended up with no income ;). I was initially shocked, but now I find it pretty entertaining actually :).
