Load Shedding - South Africa In A Crisis

Load shedding is a term founded in South Africa 13 years ago based on the fact they don't have enough electricity for the country. Everyone takes a turn in having a blackout so that is how they make it through certain periods of the year. Winter the consumption goes up as more power is required due to more demand.

In January 2008 Eskom controversially introduced "load shedding", planned rolling blackouts based on a rotating schedule, in periods where short supply threatens the integrity of the grid.

What hope does a country have if they haven't fixed a serious problem they encountered over 13 years ago?

Over the last few days we have had so much interference with our power supply in South Africa it is hard to plan anything. This morning I arrived at work to find no power thinking at worst it will be 4 hours only as that is the norm here. The power had been switched off at 6am so 10 am would be it but no it came back on just after midday. For most businesses this is a lost day whilst still paying salaries and is not something anyone wants to see. Especially considering as so many businesses are still in recovery mode after 15 months of lock downs.

Tomorrow it is only meant to be a two and a half hour inconvenience but who knows what it will be in reality as they rarely stick to a timetable.

The Electricity utility supplier Eskom wants to raise their tariffs by 15% which is insane considering how expensive electricity already is. I was going to install solar at the house but there is little point as firstly where will you be living in 5 years time? Will I be in SA and that is a most definite no. There is no future here as the country is turning into being like every other country in Africa.

The last government was dead against anyone using solar power or alternative power as they saw it as lost revenue. They even went as far as saying they would heavily tax generators and solar panels plus impose a special tax for anyone using them. I read an article today showing they have done a complete u turn on this and have now openly asked for help from alternative energy suppliers.

The only perk is you get to see the stars during blackouts with no city lights interfering.

The truth is they are not producing enough electricity to meet the demand and this should have been addressed by the Zuma government. Those cronies were only interested in stealing and over the 8 years in power systematically emptied the country's reserves leaving it broke. Ramaphosa is in power these days, but is still fighting corruption amongst his own ministers and trying to improve things will take decades.

The sad truth is a terminology made up 13 years ago is actually part of everyone's vocab in South Africa and everyone fully understands it's meaning.

There used to be loadshedding for 16-18 hours a day in Nepal which was really frustrating.

Yes indeed, we are suffering with the blackouts and the corruption doesn't stop.
Every single day we see headlines about somebody up for stealing millions. We had a surfeit of power when I worked on the high voltage towers, but maintenance was canned and now we are in a real mess.
Not one tender can be trusted, as there are always many fingers in the pie.

Until we defund them by having our purchasing power out of their reach it won't stop! The wealthier South Africans already have their escape counties, the middle class continues to drain as smart and skilled people move to other countries

What will be left is the hopeful, patriotic, poor and unproductive to be governed! We can only look to our neighbours in Zimbabwe to see a glimpse of a possible future at this rate

I can only agree with you my friend by placing all of the money on the table we can clearly see what happened, as there are greedy fingers all round.
This could so easily have worked out if the cadre placements never happened, but yes, we are in deep trouble methinks.

Cheers and have a slice of !PIZZA

Little hope on the horizon, especially after 13 years, I'd say.

We have occasional programmed blackouts on very hot days when demand is high but it's so rare I can't recall the last one. The government also installed the world's largest [at the time] Tesla battery and massive solar farms to feed it plus wind farms all over the place so the last rolling blackout is a distant memory. Many houses have solar panels also, including my own, so the draw from the grid is far less these days.

I guess that's what it takes to alleviate the reliance on grid power but it seems your government is more focused on other more important matters such as taking money to line thier own pockets. Seems typical human behaviour really, judging by history. It might be time for you to get out.

Honestly for me I don’t even complain anymore and I’ve had a total of 4 days in the last 3 weeks if you add up all the hours

It’s easy to point fingers but we as a country let this happen, not a few corrupt people! If everyone sits by as we have and done nothing this is what happens

I’ve already made peace with it, I can already see from the numbers we only accelerating inflation!

Tito has actually tried to hold back the pillaging trying to close the budget deficit but he’ll be out on his arse soon and the money printer will send us deeper into the dark ages

Best thing you can do is save yourself, go solar, get a generator, get out of the Rand and into Bitcoin! Exit the system or exit the country no ones going to save you

This thing called corruption is such an addiction to politicians that I have to admire the way they act without thinking of likely consequences. Surely 13 years is enough time to expand the available capacity if they really wanted to.

Here in the United States, Texas got away with not fixing its power grids for about 20 years ... but then got caught with its first subzero week IN HISTORY this winter. NOW, things are being fixed ... but it is amazing how long things can NOT be fixed as long as there are people not interested in fixing things...
