Why We Need To Move Communication Away From Big Tech

avatar

Hey Jessinternet users

The internet has brought the world closer together, launched new business models, reduced inefficiency, open up new lines of instant communication and reduce the barrier to information. At least that’s what we wanted, and we did get to an extent.

However, as the internet becomes more profitable to use, big tech has made it their mission to dominate this space.

The social media squeeze

Social media is centralized between a few US-based companies like Facebook, Twitter and Reddit, with only Chinese based TikTok providing any competition in recent years.

Social media has shown very little remorse for offering us a so-called free service while data mining ⛏ and selling that data to advertisers. The business model has been hugely profitable for these companies, which is why they can offer their services for free.

The thing with data is you always going to look for new data touchpoints to add to your feed and supply your machine learning models with more information.

Instant messaging the next target

One area where people feel data mining is a bit of an issue is in instant messaging. It’s a poorly kept secret that social media sites are looking to get into your chats, look at keyword usage and intent so they can improve their ad serving.

Is this where we draw the line? I think as a responsible internet user, you should be looking at cleaning up your online footprint, reduce your data creation, decentralise your data and be aware of the data you produce.

There are several options available for alternative chat applications, but none of them has yet to pull in the numbers we need to see for disruption to take place in this market.

Being your own lawyer

I’ve spoken previously on how being your own bank is a tough transition that not everyone's is ready for or would care about in acting, but I think it’s important to have the option.

Just as crypto returns some of your rights and bargaining power away from central authorities.

Blockchain, tokenisation and web 3 dapps are going to help you take back your data. To protect it, to give you a legal foothold, to leverage your data the way you see fit.

I think digital identity tokens will become the norm. Where users would store their personally identifiable info in an NFT but never have to reveal the data

The token alone verifies the authenticity with the backing of oracles, and users will have control over who can access their identity NFT to tap into the data you create.

Dapps would need to request certain data, and the more data they want, the more they need to pay.

Users will be able to choose who much or how little of their data they would like to monetize, while others who feel their privacy is worth more than a few pennies can lock out any company or protocol.

Protecting your privacy

If we don’t begin to value our data and draw a line in the sand, then these data mining companies will continue to exploit data with no restrictions. Until we remove some of the economic incentives at play, then we can’t begin to ring in these companies.

Have your say

The NSA and others built databases of what people do and that would include, at least potentially if not constantly or completely, instant messaging, etc.

Edward Snowden has said they collect everything or as much as possible. I could talk all day about all of this but I agree with you and that is why I love alternative tech like Hive and specifically Leo Finance of course looks interesting, etc.

I think people don't value their privacy, this is evident in what people involve in in other to trend, look at tik tok and Facebook, the aim is majorly to get that cheap popularity how would they now even care about decentralising their data?

It’s a victimless thing, like the user doesn’t see they getting exploited they too happy with free access to the platform and havnt personally been burned by it so they continue!

There is something magical about getting something for free that people can’t resist and they always willing to give up other things in return as long as it’s seen as “free”

I suppose people don't care about their privacy until something really bad happens. Even crypto which started with privacy in mind now requires a ton of KYC to transact on an exchange.

Yeah it bugs me that privacy isn't the default setting and you need to actively work to avoid KYC or creating a data footprint online

Nothing is free in this world
If social media platforms are not selling you the product and giving you the service for free that means YOU ARE THE PRODUCT
They are selling your information for their gain it’s that simple ☹️

So true and the worst part is you're selling it at way below cost, each person on social media is worth like $520 at the mont, I am not sure what the margins are on running the business but I'm pretty sure there's more than enough to be rewarding the creators of your content

it's good that there is a blockchain-based technology to save data and increase privacy, thank you for sharing the link, have a great day

While they are not perfect or ready for mass adoption I’m glad people are building these solutions it’s only a matter of time before they catch fire and we move over

I have a personal Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn account only because I had them back in the day and then tired it to business accounts and now because I use those business accounts I’m stuck with having those personal accounts..well Instra I can remove now since it’s combined with FB, but the rest not so much

I’ll keep them open as long as I have clients that need those services otherwise I’d be long gone

In terms of personal posting lol it’s pretty dead apart from the old LinkedIn post

I still run ads on Facebook and I’m amazed at how well they still work there are so many people who are still so fixated on it I can’t even see the appeal! Even Instagram seems to have lost its shine! You want my attention, fuck you zuck pay me

Yeah , Instagram certainly seems to have lost its shine like you say. Even these thirst trap girls are having a harder time getting attention. They have to go to TikTok now

This would be great but some people don’t feel it’s important enough to have as a concern. The mindset is always “what’s wrong I have nothing to hide” because the system breeds cogs in the wheel, not people who want their own wheel. There’s a decent amount of people to do what we are doing but not enough, or organized enough, to really push a concept like this far enough yet. Progress though, we are getting there I think!

If people want the current system of social media by all means I don’t care as long as there’s options! I mean this one isn’t even fully fleshed out but I’ve gotten so much from it already I can only imagine what it would be like if it caught on

Having stake in a platform makes you less likely to be a dick not that it’s stopping people but still. I wonder how long the switch will take though it didn’t take that long for Facebook to lose ground to Instagram and then the rise of tiktok
