The ridiculous cost of living

As you read, you might feel like this post is more of a rant than anything else. That may be the case, but I am often dumbfounded by how insanely expensive it is to simply live your life.

The markup on products these days seems to be out of control at times. It is easy to understand sometimes why people are pushing for a $15 minimum wage when it costs so much just to function on a daily basis.

Let's get the big one out of the way first:

Cell phones. I think we can all agree that cellphones are ridiculously over price. We all know that the cost to make them is a mere fraction of what they actually charge for them. This has been hashed and rehashed over the years and yet nothing is done about it.

For a while there were some companies like OnePlus that were offering reasonable prices for high quality phones, but even now their prices aren't too far off from the big name brands.

As much as some would hate to admit it, smartphones are a part of life now. It is just a fact. My smartphone is my mailbox, my tv, my radio, my newspaper, my book, my computer, my gaming console, my map, my wallet, my calculator, my photo album, and oh yeah, my phone.

I would stop short of saying a smartphone is a necessity, but I think we can all agree how integral they are (when used responsibly). That fact alone probably answers the question as to why companies can charge such a premium for them.

Let's take a step back and assume that smart phones aren't quite as important as I think they are. Instead, lets talk about insurance. Any insurance, you pick. The costs are ridiculous. We supposedly need it, but quite honestly I think there are really only two main categories of insured people.

  • The first category would be those who are under-insured or not insured at all. I myself was in this pool at one time. It is just too dang expensive. I had been cut to part time at my job and the HR person was in a state of disbelief when I told her I didn't want the COBRA insurance. I had to explain that thanks to their decision to downsize my job it was either take insurance or pay my rent. Unfortunately so many people are in this position because the rates are so insane.

  • Then there are those who are over-insured beyond belief. In some strange twist of fate, I am probably in this category now. They have insurance for everything and people pay for it. Then, in your worst moments when you really need the product you have been paying for, they fight with you over trivial things. It is a joke.

Companies and people are getting big paydays for a product that you will hopefully never use and when you do have to use it, they make it as difficult as possible to get what you deserve.

Finally, you are going to laugh, but this is the group of products that really got me going on this rant. It is unbelievable to me how overly expensive personal hygiene items are. When my wife and I go shopping I am floored by the price of simple things like toothpaste, soap, deodorant, TP, shampoo, over the counter medicines, feminine hygiene products, etc.

These are things that people need to use every day (hopefully they are). It just seems a bit like the companies are taking advantage of us and charging excessively for things that they know we need. In many cases it isn't just a vanity issue, it is a health issue. People shouldn't be forced to make the choice between being clean and eating or paying their other bills.

And don't get me started on the cost of fresh produce!...

Will I say anything new, if I state that prices are always set by the buyers?
Price is always as high as possible up to levels where there are still enough buyers ready to accept it and pay it.

That is a good point, we definitely don't help ourselves when we fork out thousands of dollars each time a new model is released.

A great point of view bozz! There are a lot of wisdom to this post! BTW have a look at the price of razor blades that we men NEED - they must be overpriced, haha!

Oh yeah, that is another great example. Then like every couple of years they add another blade and you have to start all over again! It's just silly!

At least they've asked you about the insurance! In my country, you do not have the chance not to be insured. Maybe if you are unemployed you can be uninsured. The saddest thing here is they take from you every month a % of the salary and then when you need a doctor you must pay again...

Yeah, that sounds pretty horrible. I know there are a lot of people who have none simply because they can't afford it. Then something happens and the bills are pretty much with them for the rest of their lives.

Cell phones aren't necessarily over priced...if you are willing to avoid the latest and greatest anyway. Those are always way over priced. Insurance on the other hand is insane. I have shealth "benefitts" at work but the fact of the matter is I could buy my own for the same cost. Limited choices and overregulation are a big part of the problem.

Good point. I usually buy a phone that is a couple of models behind the most recent offering. I honestly think the whole healthcare system needs a massive overhaul.

I can see how some people find it hard to get by. When it comes to phones the family are all using Motorola ones that seem good value compared to something like an iPhone or a premium Samsung. I know some feel they need the latest top models, but they probably don't use all the features. They will be out of date within about 3 years, so have to think how much value they lose in that time.

I agree on insurance. With insuring the house, car and some life insurance that's a lot of money going out. For young people car insurance can be more than the car is worth. There are some advantages to being old :) Health insurance is not essential here, but I get some through my job.

Luckily I have simple tastes and don't feel the need for trendy clothes brands or all the latest gadgets.

Meanwhile there are less well off people who smoke and want an iPhone and fancy trainers. They must be living off credit all the time.

Yeah, lifestyle definitely plays a part in all of this. I don't know as though I have ever owned the latest and greatest phone except maybe my recent one which work paid for. Typically I buy the two or three year old model. Insurance is a total racket and the inflated prices on necessary hygiene products are a joke.

When it comes to hygiene I mostly get by with toothpaste and soap. There's a lot of products that are more about marketing than necessity.

We do. We're not generally expected to splash out on make-up and fancy clothes. There's a vast marketing machine trying to persuade us to spend on stuff we don't need and you have to decide if you opt out of that.

I can not agree more, We have 14.50 min wage in Ontario and it's a joke. A one bedroom apartment goes for 1000-2000.

Yup over 50% your wages just to have a roof.

The price of everything here is crazy, and yes personal hygiene products are one of the worse. Lucky we have natural alternatives that we can use to replace this.

Like Idk if you heard of nopoo but I have used it for 8 months now and it's just baking soda and apple cider vinegar to wash hair.

I use to spend 50$ a month on shampoo and conditioner for my family now I spend $2 and works epic. I work construction and you would even tell by my hair🤣.

Guess this turned to a story 🤣🤣

Wow, that is crazy. I know when I was renting a small house it was like $550 per month and that was high back then. I have never heard of nopoo. That is quite interesting. I don't have much hair so I can make a shampoo bottle last half a year! It is still expensive when I need to restock though.

Yeah rent is the worse ATM,

Yeah I got 6 in the house 3 girls and we all have longer hair so use alot.

It works great actually, When I started I thought my hair was gonna stink like Apple cider vinegar but you can't smell it at all

That is really cool! Probably works similar to that apple pectin shampoo that was all the rage when I was a kid. Sounds like a full house for sure!

Are you me? Lol

Hmmn where is the lie in all this? Absolutely none, even here prices of common staple foods have gone through the roof! This is the point where I say people should be paid for being alive really!

No doubt! When we get groceries and spend about $120 per week a good 50% of that bill is for fresh fruit and vegetables. It's pretty sad that eating healthy is so expensive.

My solution to the problem of criminally high rent was simply to become homeless by choice. I'm fortunate to be able and willing to live this lifestyle. We'll see how long I can do it :)

Good luck with that! My wife would like to be a full time RV'er, but I like having a place to call home and come back to every now and then.

Yup, it makes sense to want a place you can always come back to. I miss it occasionally. But not enough to go back - yet :)

The problem is that the supply line issues have increased community prices and it doesn't help that the transportation issue is also worst than before the lock-downs. At this point, the manufacturers are passing down part of the costs down to the consumers but they can't even pass all of it. I just don't see how things won't go up in the short term.

This has been going on for years though. I remember having these same thoughts ten years ago about personal hygiene products. It is just silly.

My smartphone is my mailbox, my tv, my radio, my newspaper, my book, my computer, my gaming console, my map, my wallet, my calculator, my photo album, and oh yeah, my phone.

Seems like #smartphones arent so costly.

How much does a mailbox cost? $30?
Gaming Console? 200?
Computer/Laptop? $300?
Calculator? $10
Photo Album? $10
Wallet? $10

How about road atlas? $15
Camera? $150
Video Player? $50
Music Player? $50

It seems that all of this would have cost near $1,000 20 or 25 years ago.

Amazing how we conveniently forget all the things #technology make obsolete which use to cost money.

The areas that technology penetrates tend to go down in price effect.

Ah, camera, I knew I was forgetting one of those things. really if you added up all of the books and music it would easily pass that $1000 mark I bet. Especially those dang hard covers!

Well i don't really care about the reasons they high and overpriced items people need. I do understand i know people. People aren't going to continue to sit back and let this circus have at it. People are going to make changes whether it breaks the system further or improves it lol. It doesn't really matter we are not using our brains if we don't see the writing on the wall about a response that's coming sooner than later. So we can create whatever systems we like.

Set whatever prices we like. The bottomline is people are going to get really tired and there are going to be some major changes you all may not like. They coming anyway it's not hard to understand why. Overpriced items to serve the need of corporate greed for shareholders whom i care nothing about. We have 3d printers we have all the tech in the world to make this stuff more cost effective now we not living in the 18th century. So i wouldn't get so use to this so called system of order we have now where these poor folks can barely buy a loaf of bread because of someone political ideology. No this is going to stop very soon one way or the other.

You are hitting on the many core issues with developed world cost of living. I hate the fact that there are so many kinds of subscriptions nowadays. Cell phones service, internet, Amazon prime, internet subscriptions. It all adds up to an expensive monthly cost just to stay up with the latest and greatest. It gets worse with real essentials like health insurance and housing. Just not right. Third world countries have their own issues but it’s not like develop world escapes the issues either. Violence, food and supply shortages, obtaining clean water all issues USA has faced recently and in some parts still do. !LUV and !PIZZA

Yes, great points. Life as a service has definitely become the norm these days. I know I am blessed to be living in the first world but even here there are so many people struggling.
