Monetary Karma

Let me know if you have ever been in this position...

By some stroke of fortune, luck, planning, or whatever you come into a decent sum of money. Say a tax return or an unexpected gift or hopefull for many of us crypto gains. Then, almost as suddenly something with your car, house, whatever breaks and you are suddenly faced with a similarly large expense.

I am sure it isn't the case, but I honestly feel like this happens to be every single time.

It is almost like the universe has some form of monetary karma that dictates your finances need to maintain a certain level of equilibrium. I've gotta believe I am not the only one this impacts, but many times it feels like I am.

In a round about way it reminds me of Jurassic Park. I always remember the quote about "life finding a way" and it makes me relize the universe is seemingly always going to find a way to reach some kind of balance. Perhaps other peoples balance happens suddenly in one fell swoop whereas mine happens gradually over the course of time.

Here are a couple perfect examples of what I am talking about...

Again, no secret that thanks to some smart crypto moves I was able to eliminate my outstanding debt. Perfect! Time to start finally building up my savings account so I can have some emergency money.

My truck on the other hand has other plans. I knew the brakes were getting close to needing to be replaced, but right before one of our biggest trips of the summer, I am no longer able to put those repairs off any longer.

I had a feeling it was going to be expensive, but the final cost was a bit more than I was planning. New brakes, rotors, calipers, it all adds up. Plus since my truck has over 100k miles on it I wanted them to give it a good once over to ensure it runs well for years/miles to come.

$2100 later I am rolling down the street in a safe and reliable truck.

It was necessary, but it still kind of stings...

Then there's this...

This weekend we were getting hit with some pretty excessive rain in my region of the country. Close to three inches of rain over a two to three day period. During one of the breaks in the weather my wife and I were out loading the trailer for our next camping trip.

That is when my wife noticed there was some obvious water damage down the one side of the trailer. I climbed up a ladder in the rain and noticed this gap due to "sun rot". I have a feeling it was there for a while becuase the wood in a six inch square surrounding the caulking feels pretty brittle.

I seeled the gaps, but long story short I am likely looking at some pretty significant roof repairs in the future. At $325 per linear foot I could be dealing with a bill in the $5000 to $10,000 range depending on how extensive the damage is.

All of that extra money that should be going into savings is now unexpectedly diverted elsewhere.

See what I mean about equalibrium?

I am curious, do you experience this sort of thing? Everytime? Only occassionally?

Let me know in the comments.

Breaks always arrive in two's or three's, normally one thing leads to the next within a week or two, regularly!

Every time you think you have a little extra something will eat it away, fret not this happens here as well!

It makes me feel a little better to know it isn't just me, but I definitely don't want to say it makes me happy. I hate to think that others have to suffer through this cosmic balancing act!

We made a joke the old scrap truck went was waiting down the road to call-out "scrap metal", normally after fridge, microwave, TV or other implements went to the blitz/fritz! No I know that feeling when you stretch each penny to make it count.

Yep had a trading account that I forgot about. It had 2 grand in it. Was a nice notice to get.

Did you end up with a big expense right after that, or did it balance out some losses you had taken earlier?

Well yes sometimes everything is going quite well then some bad things happen. Either way things just don't always go well and we have to deal with the unexpected.

Yeah, I guess it is all part of life. It just seems so deflating sometimes.

Oh I feel for you guys, that sucks! (understatement!)
I do recognize the feeling though, can't sum up the examples exactly but for years and years (maybe I had 7 years of bad luck?) I can't remember anything else than knowing we'd be in better financial positions soon, all figured out, and then shit hit the fan again. Whatever that may have been, it was always 1 step forward, 2 steps back.. not fun at all!

hopefully, another "lucky amount" pops up to cover this :)

Yes, I hope that is the case as well! I totally hear you about the one step forward two steps back thing!

I once had one of those blows and I spent it all on myself, and now I regret it very much.

You're not alone, seems to happen for me as soon as I realize I need to save everything I earn. Bad part of life, one thing breaks and you fix it, then another problem arises.

For sure! It is a small comfort to know that I am not alone.

Ohh yes for sure not just you
We spent a bit getting our house and yard setup as we wanted it after we moved in last year and then settled into a retirement budget, only to have a couple of issues with the house, finding the people that did the flip cheaped out on the insulation and problems with the AC unit and hence unexpected expenses

Ugh! That totally sucks. I've been in that position too. My wife and I just did a small reno in our bathroom. Took out a medicine cabinet and put up a mirror. Turned into a much bigger job because the previous owner had cut through the studs!

What I usually see is balance.

I recall the time when I was "skint" (as they say in England) and something told me to check the closets to see if there was anything I could sell.

Under a layer of clothes, I found $200! Turns out I had hidden it there after going to the convenience store late at night months earlier to avoid being robbed. (I had been followed by someone, and luckily plain-clothed police had noticed him following me and stopped him).

After that, I only carried enough on me to purchase what I needed. Needless to say, that money appeared just when I needed it the most! Wishing the same to you! :)

That is awesome! It is great to hear that the stories go the other way too. I'd much rather hear about money popping up just when you need it versus expenses happening as soon as you get a windfall!

It's like I'm reading "The story of my life".

Too many examples to even write them up, but I feel like I'm trying so damn hard to get my head above the water, and every time when I think that I'm there, there comes something around the corner to knock me down again. Gone are my little savings, gone is my crypto. And I have to stretch every penny again to make it count.

Really depressing.

I am sorry to hear that! It seems that this is a common theme with many people unfortunately. Even more evidence that this whole monetary karma is actually a thing.

I am sure it is the case, the thing might be that our minds link the occasional gain to the occasional loss trying to connect dots that are not there.

Because if there was no direct loss after a gain we would not notice, but I think it´s the sick sense of humor of those watching us....Karma is a Lady !CTP

Haha yeah, you are probably right! It's only front of mind because there is a loss.

Murphy's law? Coincidence? Destiny? Karma? Balance?
I feel you. I get your point. And I am sorry, sounds like a tough, challenging period.

One way how I take challenging times and situations is to understand that it is about myself. About how I chose to take it. Like the saying: chose positive thoughts. I don't put myself in the role of a victim.
Maybe it helps you to keep smiling and take the challenge as easiest and positive as possible.

All the best to you brother!

That's also a good way to look at it. Thankfully, a lot of those worries are behind me now that I am debt free, but the unexpected expenses still hurt a little!

Oh this hits so close to home! Every time I get a bit of a windfall something pops up to claim it, but lately, instead of getting mad/angst about life lifing or excited when a little bit extra flows my way, I have just been practicing gratitude for what comes and accepting that things go how they are supposed to go without getting overly attached to the outcome I think I need.

It's been helpful for my overall vibe lol!

The month I got stuck with 25K in catastrophes was the one that helped me realize this kinda stuff is always going to happen and how I react to it is the only thing under my control. That said, facing an entire roofing job right after redoing the brakes is an ouch and I really feel for ya.

And there I went rambling again, it's just that I am right in the middle of another there goes all my savings again sessions, so this was a great reminder of things, thanks @bozz!

I'm sorry you are going through that. I am looking at another hole that needs to be excavated in my front yard and eventually my roof and windows need to be done. Thankfully I still have some time on that!

The world has to stay in balance. If you receive a large input, there has to be an output to balance it out. LOL

Quite often ... but, as a Christian I look at it as, "God knew I was going to have need X, and so provided for it." Losing out on my plans still stings a bit, but at this stage of my life, I have accepted that while I do what I can with every opportunity (saw this on Listnerds, of course), I'm not in charge of most of what happens in the world around me.

That is a good way to look at it. Everything we own is his after all, so the disappointment of losing ownership really shouldn't sting as bad as it does.

And, since He said He would provide for our NEEDS (not necessarily our plans and wants, though), we can worry less because if what we have today is going out tomorrow, that's not the end ... that's just looking forward with faith to the day after tomorrow...
