Keep Calm and Fork On

Here we are just about three hours away from Hard Fork number 25 and as a seasoned veteran of this blockchain I kind of have a lot of feels right now. I could be wrong, but in the past year Hive has seen more updates than the old chain did in a three year period. It feels like it anyway, even if I am totally wrong.

It is super exciting to see the blockchain adapting, evolving, and growing as new users join and new ideas or initiatives are introduced.

I've gotta believe days like these are some of the most stressful things that witnesses deal with on this chain. Despite best laid plans and massive amounts of testing on any chain it always seems that things don't always go as planned.

Being in tech, I know the feeling. I had to upgrade some RAM in a machine the other day. It should have been a five minute job tops, but here I am two days later and the machine in question is still only running 4 GB of RAM. Nothing ever goes as planned, nothing ever goes as smoothly as it should.

It is paramount that we keep that in mind as we progress through the day.

Nodes have felt a little funky on Hive the past couple of weeks. I'd plan for a lot more of that today. I remember Hard Forks in the past where the chain was down for days. Discord was blowing up with people complaining. It was virtually impossible to do anything related to the blockchain.

It was a helpless, hopeless feeling.

Your first instinct will probably be to feel lost. You won't know what to do when you can't post, comment, curate as smoothly as you do every day. Next will come the frustration as you continually try to do the things that you do ever other day. Only today they might not work. Then the anger comes so you jump over to Discord and start saying stuff without really thinking first.

Before you go down that road, just remember to stop and take a breath. If there are issues today, they are only temporary. I am sure we all have first hand experience with the best laid plans not always going according to the script.

Despite all of the testing that I am sure has went into the Hard Fork today, things can still go wrong. It is life, it is Murphy's Law in all of its grandeur. It's not personal, it's not purposeful, it's just life.

Best of luck today everyone. For all I know things could go smooth as silk.

Just in case, give your favorite witnesses a hug today!

If I ever track down that Murphy.... Well you know

There does seem to have been a lot and time will tell how this one goes, but as you say we have to relax and go with the flow no matter how long it takes

My hope is any issues will be short. It seems we have a really good team supporting us through this.

I am hoping the same of course, but have like you seen some that take a while, if it does run longer than expected I will stay calm :)

We have gone through some trauma on previous hardforks, but we got through in the end. I think the developers and witnesses have worked hard on this. Of course it's impossible to foresee every possible issue. I just hope it is all working fine at least within a day. A short outage is not too bad really.

Yeah, I am more than ready to find something else to do if necessary. I know how these things go. I agree they have all probably done the best they can, but you just never know what is going to happen in the real world. That's life!

Onwards and upwards, happy hard fork day! I may not post today but instead just stop by and enjoy others content and leave comments.

Despite best laid plans and massive amounts of testing on any chain it always seems that things don't always go as planned.

Well said, good to temper expectations a little, this is tech, nothing ever goes as planned! But we always make it out with a nice upgrade to show for the growing pains.

This does seem to be one of the smoothest ones we have seen in a while. I am pretty impressed so far!

Commenting a few hours after this post and guess what? It looks like the update has took without a hitch! No down time, no major issues.

Congratulations to all of our block-producers (witnesses) and @blocktrades in particular for a fantastic upgrade to our blockchain with no major issues that I can see!

Yeah, this had been a banner moment for the blockchain I think.
