#CryptoFinance Initiative: How has Crypto and Blockchain Technology Impacted my Personal Finance?

avatar

I saw a few of my contacts participating in this initiative hosted by @theycallmedan and it really pulled me towards it. The main reason is because this topic actually hits close to home for me, considering how much impact blockchain and crypto has impacted my life.

The Beginning

I heard whispers about Bitcoin in 2009. Back then, I was just graduating from Secondary school, and my head was more focused on getting into the university and girls. I clicked around the internet and stuff but I wasn't looking out for investment opportunities and no, I wasn't looking for an asset to hedge my lunch money.

Fast forward to December of 2017, @ebingo called up and said "bro, join Steem, you will do well" and the rest is history. However, the reason why my brother thought I'd do well on Steem front end was that prior to that moment, I had spent numerous years in the blogging wilderness, trying to make headway on the internet.

My First Crypto saved Christmas

The first cryptocurrency I ever owned was Steem and I earned it from my post reward. It was in late 2017, and back then, Steem price was through the roof. I earned SBD and Steem power from my post and it was coincidentally my first earning from blogging, despite being in the game for 4 years prior to that moment.

This payout came in just around Christmas in 2017 and back then, I was broke as shit that period. I had no knowledge about exchanges or how they worked, so I sent my SBD to @bhoa and sent me money. That was how my Christmas was saved ladies and gentlemen, and you know, that's something that will stick with me forever.

Blockchain created a career blogger

My interaction with cryptocurrency was exclusively on Steem and I made sure I made the best out of this opportunity. I spent more time thinking about articles and stuff that I'd publish to increase my audience.

At the start, I wrote just about everything you can think of; poems, short stories, reviews, comedy etc. I grew my audience by making friends with some interesting people on the blockchain. Some of my earliest friends were @steemmatt, @amirtheawesome1, @idikuci, @dj123, @holybranches, @lordbutterfly @trumpman, @profanereviews and many others who jerked me and engaged my post.

I participated actively in comedyopenmic, where I wrote some pretty interesting and funny articles that are on the chain forever. Despite my job as a teacher at the time, blogging was my main means of income and it was all thanks to cryptocurrency.

Investing and diversifying

At this point, I started looking beyond simply "blogging to eat" and I wanted something more. I started looking at different ways to increase my portfolio, outside of blogging. I wanted to own Bitcoin like everyone else and so, I started playing with @blocktrades and no.

I figured out how to convert Steem and SBD to other cryptocurrencies, mostly Bitcoin and Ethereum, through Blocktrades. I bought my first Bitcoin and then my first Ethereum in that period.

After understanding Luno, I later moved my activities to exchanges like Binance and Bittrex, where I bought other tokens for hodling. I never got the point of just holding a token, but it felt nice to own those tokens.

Freelance Career

Technically, I have been a freelance writer since 2017, but for this post, let's just assume it started in 2018 when I started writing for other people's blogs.

Back then, I was getting paid in Steem and upvotes to write reviews, stories and stuff like that. It was a new world for me but I took it in my stride because I enjoyed it.

As time went on, I developed an interest in writing about cryptocurrency, finance, blockchain and other related topics. Thanks to my experience in Steem, Hive, and support from @forexbrokr, I have been growing my profile as a freelance writer.

I am still far from my target as a content writer but I'm grateful for the journey so far. Through writing content, I have earned a fair bit of money that has dramatically improved the quality of my life.

FInal words

Generally speaking, cryptocurrency and blockchain technology has seamlessly improved my finances. Through cryptocurrencies, I have been able to provide my basic needs and saved a fair bit of money for future projects, particularly, escaping from Nigeria in the near future.

Through blockchain blogging on numerous front ends, I have earned a living that enables me to provide for myself and my loved ones. It is not earth-shattering, but it is enough to at least handle the things right in front of me.

Through blockchain, I have learnt investment strategies and developed the patience to hodl. I have grown as a person and developed skills that will enable me to earn even more money through investment in digital assets, as well as physical projects.

Sorry, dude. I don't come on here much and just stopped in to see I had a whack of mentions but you were the only real person so I thought I would come and see what you said. I was saddened when I saw it was something normal.
