Wednesday Hiking in Decorah

North of downtown Decorah is Dunning Springs Park, the former site of what was originally a sawmill built after the American Civil War that was later modified to cut stone rather than lumber. Now a city park with poorly marked trails. The volume of water in the spring didn’t seem enough to be able to power equipment to cut stone, but what do I know about nineteenth century water-powered machinery?

A bit east of there is the Decorah Ice Cave State Preserve. It’s a proceed at your own risk place that signage warns you to go no more than 10 feet (3 meters) into but, warnings or not, a guy my size probably couldn’t make it much further than that as it got very tight with not much height:

Later we went to Phelps Park west of downtown that has a Trout Run Trail that meanders through the bluffs above the Upper Iowa River. Plenty of local rock to build walls with:

Not sure where any Trout would have Run, the several stream beds we passed over were all dry:

Maybe they’re seasonal streams?

Later, dinner at a downtown restaurant, halibut for my wife and chicken parmesan for me:

What a wonderful hike
Loved those stone formations.. if that's what you'd call them
And of course a good hike should end with good food :D
