Streets Are The Artery Of Mass Economy

Each country has different customs. I live in Indonesia. Indonesian people are a communal society. They like to live in a group or communities. Sometimes, you will be surprised or amazed at how a village with a thousand inhabitants fight with other village inhabitants on streets that separate both villages.

A retailer is arranging his products in front of his retail stall.

Pride of the group is common character of Indonesian people. If a member of the group is hurt by other groups, then there will be massive chaos if police officers do not stop the rumble.

Street is the artery of economy

Other things that may be different from other countries .Streets are the artery of economy. Many stores, small coffee shops, markets and other economic activities are on the side of streets or near a main street. You can see many houses that are located on the side of street are changed into shops. The price of houses or real estates on side of street is also expensive.

Internet and online stores

The growth of internet and online stores still do not change the role of streets in economy for mass in my country. Most people are still not familiar with online stores. Though, some young generation tend to change they way they do business, the role of street as the artery of economy does not change.

Why street becomes economic cycle?

My country is large with million citizens. The center of economic and financial activities are in the center of town and cities. Now, Jakarta, and other provinces near Jakarta are the biggest economic circle. There are some big industries are located in Jakarta and the city around it. Yamaha Indonesia, Honda Indonesia, Suzuki Indonesia and some food industries operate their factories in Jakarta and the city nearby.

How a traffic jam look like

From Jakarta, the products are distributed to other provinces like Central Java, Sumatra, East Java, Bali and all provinces. The distribution process should use land transportation for some products. Only few products are distributed via air transportation.

That is why the activities of distribution and human movement make street always crowded. This is a business opportunity for people who have location or space on the side of street. Some people open retailer stores, small coffee shops or even mobile coffee sellers.

There are no standardization to open small stores , restaurants or coffee shops from government. People are free to open the stalls. Riders, drivers or people who pass by street can park their vehicles on the side of street to eat , drink or buy some food products.

Traffic jam is money

Traffic jam is stressful for riders and drivers but not for street sellers. It is a time to get money from people who pass by the street. When there is traffic jam, more people will get down from their cars and motorcycle to buy some bottled water or some foods. Traffic jam can be hours in busy day. If you live in a country with good transportation management, you will find stressful here. All people know that traffic jam is inefficient but what should they do when they are trapped in long line of cars. That is funny but it is real.

Street cultures

Because of streets become the artery of economy, then there is street culture. People like to hang out on the side of street. Malioboro in Jogjakarta is very popular with street artists. There are many painters, street singers and some street performance. There are pros and cons why street becomes the artery of economy but that is in my country. So don't be surprised when you get in traffic jam when you visit my country.

It is interesting to see how commerce changes in different countries (or doesn't).

Perhaps we are dealing with a generational situation. Often it requires the moving on of one generation, who is usually technology averse, and have them replaced with those who embrace technology.

We are going to see how much the shift to a digital/virtual occurs in countries like yours.

Its nice to see them gather together. I was wondering do you require any licenses/permits to set up in the streets? In some places, you need to get through some of the regulations before you can set up shop.

In a center of city, a shop should have a parking space. Yes, there are some regulations to open shops or small restaurants in center of cities.

I like your description as streets being the artery of the economy. Like rivers of economic activity that nourishes the nation. This reminds me of my friend from Indonesia who I met at school in Germany. He would show me videos on his phone like this and laughed when I told him I always would get Indonesia confused with Malaysia, I think because they both end in "sia."

What I remember about him is that he was always so respectful to everyone that I told him he was an excellent ambassador for his country. Best wishes for your blog! :)
