Double uppercuts knock the public transportation out in Indonesia

Technology helps people to make their work more efficient. It happens in the transportation system in my country. Some startups become big players in the transportation system. They are Gojek and Grabbike. Gojek and Grabbike are providers of transportation apps on the play store, AppStore, and other platforms. Everyone who downloads the apps is able to order transportation services with the trip rates. People now feel more comfortable with this kind of transportation system. It is a kind of peer-to-peer transportation service.

Riders and drivers should register at the head office of those two apps. After they are selected, they can get passengers from their closest location. The use of mapping services helps passengers get riders to the closest location. After the passengers order a trip, then the riders come and take the passengers to the destination. Passengers can pay in cash or via credit balance.

The empty seats of public transportation

This innovation in the transportation system has hit the old model of transportation in my country.
Angkot ( public cars) are the old model of transportation. The cars have regulated tracks that are ruled by local governments. A car can carry 5-7 passengers. Passengers wait on a halting site to wait for the public car. Then, the passengers will go to their destination. The fare is based on the distance.

Why do people do not like that kind of old model of transportation?

The drivers often load too many passengers in their cars. This situation is not comfortable. Besides that, the condition of some cars is old and dirty. Another reason is that public cars often go late to the destination.

Transportation system on the hand.

Gojek and Grabbike know this opportunity. They create apps to serve transportation to the public. Mass also responds positively. Most people now move from the old model transportation to the apps transportation system on their handphones.

The first uppercut

The innovation has reduced the income of old model transportation companies of drivers. Some drivers change jobs but others still remain as public drivers. When I talked to a driver, he said that in a day he earned IDR 100,000 ($7). it was a good income. A few years ago, when there had been no apps of transportation, the drivers' income could be more than IDR 300,000 ($21) a day. Their income was higher than minimum wages a few years ago.

The second uppercut

Covid-19 plandemic hits the old mode of transportation. Fewer people go to malls, business centers, or public places. They prefer to stay at home. The way they shop changes too. Shopping online earns the rise of sales. This condition hits the public transport drivers for the second time. Only a few drivers still give their services.

More people do not care about the plandemic.

Current days, more people in my country do not care about covid. They use masks because of the regulation but they begin to go to malls and public places. This a good news for public car drivers. A few months ago, the street was quite empty.

That is the situation in my country. The old model of public transportation should get adapted to the innovation. In the current situation, most owners and drivers of public cars do their business only to survive. How long will they stand in this condition?
