It would be bizarre if it weren't bizarre by Hranhuk [POB Word of the Week: Bizarre # 006 ]

What comes to your mind when you hear or read the word bizarre? Probably something strange, weird, out of the ordinary.
But the story of the word bizarre is at the very least "bizarre" (making puns).

If you look for the meaning of bizarre you will find definitions that do not fit what we talk about on a daily basis (at least here in my Brazilian Portuguese language). I will find meanings like: "beautiful, elegant, brave"
We are faced with one of the few mutant words over time. And if we were to keep it as the purists wanted in the past, that word might not even be around, it would be part of “Museum”, falling out of use.
Let's go back a little bit in time to try or not to understand the bizarre.
In the case of the Portuguese language, it emerged at the end of the 16th century, coming from Spanish bizarro, with the meanings I mentioned there. But, according to most etymologists, they say that its source must be from the Italian bizzarro (choleric, fiery), which derives from bizza (cholera).
But it was in France that “bizarre” was consolidated, so to speak, as it is today with a meaning like: “very strange”. And that ended up exporting to English and in the end also to Portuguese and Spanish.
Also the other story that could have arisen in France: Coming from the Basque language as bizar which means "beard". The explanation for this would be that the Spanish bearded soldiers of the time seemed strange to the French.
Now, after all this “bizarre” class, we have to agree on one point:

Is it or is it not the most perfect word that exists in terms of meaning? If today's bizarre weren't about strange, unusual, strange things, their own meaning in history gives even more meaning to the term "power" in that word. And that makes it a paradox, doesn't it? (what a coincidence those words chosen by @calumam). Bizarre agree?

O que lhe vem à cabeça quanto você escuta ou lê a palavra bizarro? Provavelmente algo estranho, esquisito, fora do comum.
Mas a história da palavra bizarro é no mínimo “bizarro” (fazendo trocadilhos).

Se você buscar o significado de bizarro irá encontrar definições que não se encaixam no que falamos no dia a dia (pelo menos aqui em minha língua português Brasil). Eu irei encontrar significados como: “garboso, elegante, valente”
Nós estamos diante de uma das poucas palavras mutante ao longo do tempo. E se talvez fossemos manter ela como os puristas queriam antigamente, essa palavra talvez nem estaria por aí, seria parte de “Museu”, caindo em desuso.
Vamos voltar um pouco no tempo para tentarmos ou não entender o bizarro.
Se tratando da língua portuguesa ela apareceu nos fins do século XVI, vinda do espanhol bizarro, com os sentidos dos quais eu comentei ali em cima. Mas, segundo a maioria dos etimologistas, dizem que sua fonte deve ser do italiano bizzarro (colérico, fogoso), que deriva de bizza (cólera).
Mas foi na França que “bizarre” consolidou-se digamos assim ao que é hoje com um significado como: “muito estranho”. E isso acabou exportando para o inglês e que no final também para o português e espanhol.
Também a outra história que poderia ter surgido na França: Vindo da língua basca como bizar que queria dizer “barba”. A explicação disso seria que os soldados barbudos espanhóis daquela época, pareciam estranho para os franceses.
Agora, após toda essa aula “bizarra” nós temos de concordar em um ponto só:

É ou não é a palavra mais perfeita que existe em termos de sentido? Se não bastasse o bizarro hoje se tratar de coisas estranhas, incomuns, esquisitas, o seu próprio significado da história faz dar sentido ainda mais ao “poder” da palavra. E isso torna um paradoxo não? (que coincidências essas palavras escolhidas pelo @calumam). Bizarro concordam?
