Do we upvote the content or the author ?

How many times we upvoted a content. But are we always upvoting the content itself or do we upvote authors as well ?

Some of us have spent so much time here and of course we've made friends. Or at least we've followed so many people we like. We know the value of those we are following. Some people even don't need to be followed to be noticed. We just know their names. They become a part of our lives. Sometimes when there is nothing to curate, we take a look at those we know and check what they have created to support them. We know as well the value those people give and that's one of the reasons to follow them and support them sometimes. There are even names stuck in our heads. Names we may never forget.

The same about each community created and each tribe. We know who is running it, we know who is the most supported and the most active in it. By the way, active doesn't always mean supported. It's hard for some active people to be noticed, but that also depends on their activity, their point of views and the information they share. If they are active and bringing value in any form, for sure they will be supported. If their point of view match with what the majority do and that's for the sake of the community, such author will be more likely supported. If the information is original, well written and formated, it will win great upvotes as well.

So, telling that we upvote only the content here is wrong, the same if we tell that we upvote only authors. I think every single curator has to have a balance between doing both. If we don't support quality content, the platform will be full with bad content. If we don't support those who are doing well for the community, what will motivate others to do their best?

That's why when we see some authors always in the trending page, we shouldn't think that it's unfair to see them there every single day and that we should have a better distribution of rewards. But we have to think about the value those authors are bringing to the community. How often they are commenting others, how active they are curating content, how much they invested in the platform including time and money.

Sometimes not thinking about the rewards may bring even more rewards. That's the paradox, but that logical.

There are much more important things to think about !

Well it depends. Like most of us I do have some auto voting configured. So these are author related upvotes.
But I do browse around a lot. So, all the other votes are content related.
I do also try to expand my following list, because my feed tends to dry up during the summer times. So, the best way to do this is to check the news feed in some tribes I am interested in. When I do like an article, I do upvote it and check the authors blog and if I do like most of the content I will follow them.

Cheers,
Peter

Yeah, maybe the most we upvote is content, but we upvote authors as well. It seems that everything is related. After all we can't upvote everyone anyway. We will always have prefered authors, not because we follow them only, but maybe because they are so active as well. It's not our fault if we see them that active. It's not our fault if they mostly create in the time when we start curating. That's why it's maybe wrong to blame someone who upvote the same authors again and again. Especially if we are upvote by the same curators again and again. After all, maybe everyone has the right to upvote what ever he/she wants.

It indeed has also to do with timing of both. Never thought about that.

In terms of my decision making, I think the author should not figure into the determination of whether to up-vote something or not. I discourage auto-voting. Auto-voting based on author is not proofofbrain, it's proofofname. Shadow voting others is delegated proof of brain.

For sure proof of brain oriented token economy is much better. I hope most tribes will apply that and always consider this concept. But it's also good to see the hard working people rewarded somehow. Maybe not by upvotes, but they should be rewarded somehow. As I said before, the proof of brain is a collections of many proofs, including proof of work maybe !

I do both, in terms of people they have to have standards and show a consistent commitment to powering up.

I also vote decent content, but if i notice people just sell, I rarely vote them.

That's a good way as well to support the price of the token and the integrity as well.

There is incentive to upvote authors and try to get curation rewards, that can “rig the game”.
Not judging if it is good or bad, just pointing out.

I think more people upvote the authors. Contents are for the new comers. After few articles, some voters will continue or stop upvoting.

An author should be up-voted for because he/she comes with the creativity of the content.

Some people vote the subject/theme of the post. If the theme/subject is appealing, the content is irrelevant, quality too... this is something sad...

I understand you. Some don't even read the post, especially that could be clear from their comments. But usually they are newcomers looking for upvotes and they comment only trending. The original authors who are curators as well usually read most of the content and that's clear especially if they commented. That's why it's important to comment while we upvoting something. That's to give the author a feedback and to explain what's the good think we liked about his/her content.

This month I'm a little out of time, but I always look at new posts, including those with few votes, and if the content is good, I comment and if I have enough mana I vote too. I believe that the main idea of this platform is this, interaction and support. Thanks for your reply!!

I am upvoting the Authors, 75% content is repetitive.
Currently El Salvador is repetitive, then cub finance is repetitive, SL giveaways, Rising star giveaways and list go on..

After reading one, I have no interest in reading everyone version on same topic.

That's great. I don't follow the hype as well. I even don't know that much about those topics. I upvote only interesting content I like. And as you said the repetitive content is not that interesting. What people can add to the same news ? Maybe only an opinion. :)

yup, that's why you will like to read only the opinion of best author only.

Authors that can provide diversity to content in platform (or post about very specific niche that nobody else post) should be supported and encouraged to post.

I wish more writers came to Hive with the let's-write-some-repetetive-content mindset. Too many just start writing great stuff about their niche and give up when undiscovered. Had they started with El Salvador, it would have been easier to find audience when they finally switch to their favourite card game or Canadian 1960s poststamps.

Most days I would say author first because of my feed followed by their content
Then there are days when I curate for DIYHub first, then it becomes mostly content-based before I go back to check on my feed.

Yeah, it's interesting how everyone has his/her own way of curating here. ☺

I do more of both... I support newbies mostly. Set them on autovote for the first month, then change to another set of newbies but I don't just leave them, I check their posts time to time and leave little advices for them.

You should check @newbies-hive, it's a program I run with some great Hivers on the chain.

Nice, I wish check it. Supposting newbies is really important. I would like to dedicate some part of the community to support those as well. Maybe we could collaborate with the community I'm building now. I mean @dcooperation !
