Roses & Some Garden Woes

Magandang buhay everyone!

It's been a long while since my last garden post and today might be the best time for it. The truth is, I had been too lazy for some reason. Thankfully, the husband still had it in him so he took over, hehe.

Speaking of which, here's one of the roses that he planted a year or two ago. Well, I just remembered that some of those in pots were regrown sometime in August last year. They have been flowering and adding some bright colors to the yard.

He liked the variety so much that he cut some stems a few weeks ago to regrow them. And as far as I can tell, they have already grown roots. These will probably bloom around August or might be earlier. Will have to see. Hope to not forget to monitor them. These are the types that don't grow tall.

Anyhow, while the husband was away in the past few days, I visited the backyard. May sound unbelievable but I have not been there for months! I wanted to see if I could pick some courgette (zucchini) and water the plant too.

He mentioned last week that it has a lot of fruits but most of them were rotting and he was not sure if it was because of the weather or something else. We have never grown zucchini before and this was our first time so we are clueless about its care and maintenance.

While checking it out, I observed that the fruits are still small yet some are already rotten, and a few are turning pale to light yellowish. There were some injections in the fruits' skins. A couple of its leaves had white molds in them too.

I decided to discard most of them, thinking they might have been infected with some virus. I would ask the husband to spray something on the plant when he comes back, I thought. He came home the other day but I had forgotten about it, lol!

Checking it again today, I noticed the same thing on its fruits which made me believe they had been stung by nasty insects. I didn't see anything flying around though.

It's such a shame that we cannot enjoy the fruits now. I will be doing some research or will ask around what could be a remedy to stop the infection. I would also appreciate any recommendation from anyone here, thank you in advance :)

Meanwhile, our citrus trees in the other house have also been infested by aphids. These pests are common during the dry season and they are very difficult to eliminate.

A neighbor recommended spraying them with red-label (strong) insecticide but we were adamant so we have not done anything to them yet. Besides, the trees are still young and we plan to keep them short so we might just have to trim them on our next visit.

As I mentioned a few days ago, this month is the peak of the dry season here in our place and it can be extremely hot during the daytime. So there is no chance of me touching any of the greens just yet. Hopefully, I'll be able to in the coming months.

Well, this is my garden update after a long while and my participation in the March Garden Journal challenge as well. Thank you and have a lovely weekend!

It's always a pleasure to see you drop by, even if it's not that often. Shame about the zucchini and the aphids! Hopefully you'll figure out the issue xx

If you want to get peace inside, then you can go to a similar beautiful place and see the flowers, and if you are inside the house, you can also give them water.

I once had that problem with zucchini, and sprinkled some elemental calcium around the crown of the plant, which seemed to help. For aphids, I spray them heavily with water to dislodge the critters. I've also had some luck with neem oil and dish soap spray. Good luck!

May sound unbelievable but I have not been there for months!

It does sound unbelievable! You have this pretty garden and you hardly ever visit it?

Zucchini rotted before they got large during my first year growing them. Eventually the plants made a few fruits. Perhaps check the pH? Are they getting enough sun? Last year I added calcium to the soil right from the start, and had no problems at all. One plant produced enough to give a lot away.

Haha, yes. I hardly visit the backyard. If not for the zucchini, I might not have gone there. All we have back there are persimmons, some celery seedlings and oh, there are beans! I have forgotten to share.

Thanks for the tips about the zucchini. There's plenty of sunshine there from 9 in the morning til 4-5 in the afternoon. We had 3 seedlings transplanted on the plot but only one survived. I will check the soil pH later today. That might be one issue. I appreciate you for sharing your experience with the plant. Thank you.

These aphids are truly a pest... I recommend you mix 500 ml of water, plus a tablespoon of vinegar, plus a tablespoon of detergent (the kind used for washing dishes, preferably neutral). Mix everything together and you can spray on these pests.

The result is immediate and you can have a more beautiful garden with fewer aphids.

PS: Seriously... I can't believe you didn't go to the garden for months. LOL

They are indeed, and whoa, thank you for sharing your secret! I did try dishwashing liquid + water and baking soda before. I didn't know vinegar can also be added.

I can't believe you didn't go to the garden for months. LOL

I'm always visiting and watering those in the front yard but not those in the back 😂

The infestation of plants with these insects and moulds alike are big problems for the gardener but extra care will settle those issues, that is if you have time on your hands.
I loved the pink roses, they look well-kept.

Nice pictures. Seeing these pictures of flowers and vegetables reminded me of my home. We also have planted such beautiful roses plants on one side of our house.
