This post is inspired by a precious flower grown by my sister in law Ninos,Heliconia rostrate in memory of her father Don Alfonso (RIP), who was an admirer of this species.
Este post está inspirado en una preciosa flor cultivada por mi cuñada Ninos, Heliconia rostrate en memoria de su padre Don Alfonso Alfonsi (QEPD), quien era admirador de esta especie.

General Characteristics.

There are more than 300 species approximately, the best known are Heliconia rostrata, Heliconia psittacorum and Heliconia bihai, 98% of them are found in the Caribbean and South America.
Existen más de 300 especies aproximadamente, las más conocidas son la Heliconia rostrata, la Heliconia psittacorum y la Heliconia bihai, 98% de ellas se encuentra en el Caribe y Suramérica.
It has various popular names such as: lobster claw, platanillo, toucan beak, or simply hanging heliconia, according to the country where it is found. In Bolivia, it is known as patujú and its national flower
Tiene diversos nombres populares tales como: pinza o garra de langosta, platanillo, pico de tucán o simplemente heliconia colgante, de acuerdo al país donde se encuentre. En Bolivia, se le conoce con el nombre de patujú y su flor nacional.
It is a plant classified as tropical exotic, for its hanging inflorescences, diversity of sizes, shapes, and its bright and cheerful colors.
Es una planta catalogada como exótica tropical, por sus inflorescencias colgantes, diversidad de tamaños, forma, y sus llamativos y alegres colores.
They are highly appreciated as ornamental plants in public and private places, they remind us of the biodiversity of the planet that needs to be protected.
Son muy apreciadas como plantas ornamentales en lugares públicos y privados, nos recuerdan la biodiversidad del planeta que es necesario proteger.
They grow upright and can reach up to 10 meters in height, some of its roots are visible on the surface by the growth of rhizomes.
Crecen erguidas y puede alcanzar hasta 10 metros de altura, algunas de sus raíces son visibles en la superficie por el crecimiento de los rizomas.
They are usually found wild in places of high rainfall or humid, such as rainforests or adjacent to rivers.
Suelen encontrarse de manera silvestre en lugares de alta pluviosidad o húmedos, como selvas tropicales o adyacencia de ríos.
Flowers

Heliconias are very eye-catching, being their bracteas the most attractive of the plant, for its oval shape, similar to the toucan's beak, and showy and intense colors (yellow and red) that stands out with the green of its leaves.
Las heliconias son muy llamativas, siendo sus brácteas lo más atrayentes de la planta, por su forma ovalada, similar al pico del tucán, y vistosos e intensos colores (amarillo y rojo) que destaca con el verde de sus hojas.
The bracts are resplendent and are located in two opposite rows (dísticas) in hanging clusters, which sprout in groups.
Las brácteas son resplandecientes y se encuentran ubicadas en dos filas opuestas (dísticas) en racimos colgantes, que brotan en grupos.
Its size is usually between 2 centimeters wide and up to 60 centimeters long, being a beautiful spectacle to enjoy its exuberant presence.
The apology of colors of the Heliconia rostrata is surprising, the intense red of the peduncle and bracts, the radiant yellow of its edges and perianth.

The flowers (hermaphrodite) sprout inside the bracts as small yellow leaves, formed by 3 sepals and 3 petals, often not appreciated in all its peculiarity, for its size and color.
An important feature to note is that there are numerous flowers in each bract, that is why it remains in bloom for long periods, even though the life of each flower is only one day.

They are generally of elongated shapes, smooth surface and bright green color. They can grow up to 35 centimeters wide and 2 meters long.

The leaves grow vertically in an alternating way, they are constituted by a petiole and a main vein that joins the limbs that form it.

The inflorescence and colorfulness of this plant makes it stand out in the garden and is the center of attention of nature lovers.

Care of the plant

1.-) They do not tolerate cold climates, nor very hot or dry. The most recommended temperatures for its development and flowering are between 32 °C to 25 °C.
1.-) No toleran los climas fríos, ni muy cálidos o secos. Las temperatura más recomendable para su desarrollo y floración se encuentran entre 32 °C a 25 °C.
2.-) It needs sunlight, with direct or semi-direct incidence for several hours a day.
2.-) Necesita luz solar, con incidencia directa o semidirecta durante varias horas al día.
3.-) Es necesario el uso de fertilizantes preferiblemente de tipo orgánico como el compost, pues demandan suelos fértiles cuidando el déficit de potasio.
4.-) It requires moderate irrigation by sprinkling with good drainage, daily or every 2 or 3 days depending on the climate.
4.-) Requiere riego moderado por aspersión con buen drenaje, interdiario o cada 2 o 3 días dependiendo del clima.
5.-) It reproduces by branches or seeds. To avoid rotting during this period, reduce the amount and frequency of watering.
5.-) Se reproduce por ramas o semillas. Para evitar que se pudra durante este periodo, reducir la cantidad y frecuencia del riego
6.-) Due to the size of the plant, it is important to consider a minimum distance of 1.5 to 2 meters between other plants when planting.
6.-) Por el tamaño de la planta, es importante considera cuando se siembra una distancia mínima de 1,5 a 2 metros entre otras plantas.
7.-) It does not require pruning. It is convenient to discard the leaves, stems and withered flowers.
7.-) No amerita poda. Es conveniente descartar las hojas, tallos y flores marchitas.
8.-) It attracts insects, ants, spiders, worms and birds, so it is necessary to take the necessary precautions.
