Grandma Iris
My maternal Grandmother's name was Iris. This time of year when her namesake flower is blooming I am reminded continuously of this wonderfully kind and caring woman each time I see these beautiful blooms.
My grandparents lived just around the corner from the house I grew up in and I was at their house daily as I was growing up. When walking home from school I passed by their house first and stopped there to tell them about my day and enjoy the afternoon 'tea' that grandma had waiting for me. In the summer I spent weeks on end with them at their little cabin on the lake in the northwoods and learned to fish and swim.
I learned so much from her. She taught me to appreciate nature, and called my attention to all the various birds and flowers and taught me their names. I learned how to plant a garden and how to cook and bake from her.
She lived to be 81 years old and all 3 of my children have memories of their great grandmother. Actually, all 4 of my grandparents lived until I was in my 30s and all of them got to be part of my children's lives.
So many wonderful memories for me on Memorial Day weekend.

Wonderful memories and linked to a beautiful flower likewise ! 😊
A happy time, indeed. I don't think a day goes by that I don't think of her.
What a lovely tibute to Grandma Iris, Melinda. I only had a relationship with my paternal grandma, luckily it was a very close one as I lived with her when I was young and she was with us till I was in my 30s. Her husband died when my dad was very young, and I only met my maternal grandparents a handful of times when I was very young. You're so blessed to have them all with you for a long time and for them to meet your children.
I remember your post about the home your grandparents lived in in China. It was excellent and so fascinating to me. I knew nothing about the Opium Wars before then.
What a wonderful tribute to your grandmother!
I have few memories of my grandmother.
You are lucky. @melinda010100!
I never doubted for a minute that I was well loved by all my grandparents. I was so very lucky.

💖🌹...!!
@melinda010100
Iris is a lovely name as is this delightful beautiful perennial flower.
Every Spring and Summer seeing different flowers in bloom bring many fond loving memories of Grandmother..💞.
I often wonder if some of her flower gardens on the old farm were kept up cared for.
💞Grandmother💞Gratitude💞
Flowers hold wonderful memories for both of us! My grandma's middle name was Valerian. Are you familiar with that flower?
🤗
Oh Wow..I love it ! What a great middle name too..!!

tokens.I love irises and you posted gold and burgundy ones just like the ones I used to have.
Aren't they all so beautiful? I think I need to plant an iris garden.
I think so! I wish I had more sunny spaces to plant. My neighbour's trees are turning my backyard into a share garden.
That's 'shade.' lol
I lost one big old oak tree last fall and suddenly I have more sunny places than ever before. It's rather fun to be able to have different flowers this year, but it makes half of my deck unusable during the heat of the day. I miss the tree.
It's sad to lose an oak tree.
This was a huge old tree that was leaning more and more every year. Finally gravity won.
Hey dear,
Great to read about your grandparents and they way they transfer their good habits to you it is awesome. Love for nature is actually love for God, we haven't seen it but we can feel it by it's creation.
To be honest your elders were a great personality because they love with real beauty.
Thank you for your kind words. You have no idea how much they meant to me. Thank you.

tokens.Iris, what a great way to remember your Grandmother, I don't see too many Iris growing in and around my neighborhood so I can't recall it's particular fragrance.
Thanks for sharing @melinda010100
Thanks! I love their fragrance and as a kid remember inhaling it so deeply that the feathery petals would stick to my nose. 😂
What a beautiful flower that invokes those lovely memories of your grandmother with the same name.
I have the same wonderful memories of my grandmother and the mallow flower, Melinda @melinda010100. Even though she passed when I was 12 I think often of her and the happy times I had with her.
I love that your mallow reminds you of your grandma. Such sweet memories we have!
They left us such sweet memories Melinda. ❤️
Is that you in the photo with grandma Iris? The resemblance is so striking. What a great blessing you were given to be able to spend so much time with her and learning so many things. Indeed, when our time's up all we can leave them with is their memory of us. No wonder you have been such a great mother and an even awesome grandma. Love the flowers too.
It is one of the only photos I have of the two of us together. I had just received a plastic box camera as a birthday gift and I explained to Grandpa how to use it to take a picture of us. No one in our family ever took pictures back then. Grandma wanted us to stand beside her flowers that were blooming so beautifully, no one thought about the fact that it would be a black and white picture!
I learned many things from her.
