The X2 Vibe Hotel and 4K Cafe, Sukhumvit, Bangkok

avatar

Obviously, due to covid, the tourist industry in Thailand has been decimated, but they are working hard to encourage domestic tourism as the country is open and there are very few restrictions still in place for domestic travellers. Subsequently, there are some incredible bargains to be had and we've been taking full advantage!

image.png

The food comes soon, guys so bear with me please!

This hotel lies just off the Sukhumvit, south of the centre in On-Nut which is a very popular area for young foreigners to live in as rentals are much cheaper than the upper-Suk areas. There's also a plethora of hotels to choose from and this modern, condo/loft-style hotel is a typical example. It's also celebrating its 4th anniversary and so there were deals on deals!

The X2 Vibe Bangkok is not the type of place I'd normally choose to stay. It's far too cliched and tries too hard to be cool, hip and trendy. It has long term rooms and suites available and is probably suited to someone not as old and cynical as I, nevertheless, the rooms were clean, simple and well laid out. The aircon was cold and was fine for a night's (which became two nights) stay just to get out of the house and enjoy a change of scenery. There was a gym and pool, what more do you need for a cabbaging day?

The deal was this:-

Room for two. You could choose any available room in the hotel for the same price from the standard to the two-bedroom suites!
Breakfast
Lunch
A-La-Carte Dinner where you could eat anything from the menu for 1.5 hours and drink as much Coke as you could!
But wait....you could have the room for up to 44 hours for the price of one night and they threw in a 200Baht (£4.50, $6 USD) voucher.

Total price 1500Baht (£36, $60 USD)

It's a good thing we had only gone for a quick change of scenery as a hotel as soulless as this was even more depressing with no customers. They were running with a total skeleton staff of 10 and the occupancy was just 14 rooms. I know because I was chatting with the manager/receptionist/waiter. This is a 200+ bedroom hotel.

The restaurant and the food

The restaurant followed the 'cool and trendy' vibe! Again, not my style but it was nice, well laid out with lots of space between the tables and a lovely outdoor eating area, if you like your scenery concrete and condo!

image.png

Due to their been hardly anyone staying there, there was no buffet breakfast, it was cooked to order and it wasn't great and there wasn't a lot of choices!
Terrible Thai, hotdog style sausages, ham and eggs. The menu mentioned Fried potatoes...

"Don't have. Do you want mash?"

I didn't bother and nor did I attempt to explain how easy it was to turn mash into hash browns! There was also no bacon and no baked beans and no salted butter. It was poor, but no problem, I didn't sulk for too long and I felt sorry for the one waitress and one chef combination. At least what we had was hot and cooked freshly for us.

Lunch got a whole lot better...

For lunch, we could choose from their simple lunch menu so we had the Pad Thai a clear, Tom Yung Gai (spicy chicken soup!)

image.png

Now I will mention the word 'simple' yet again but it was absolutely delicious and very fresh. I do like my food to be plated in a simple manner, on simple crockery as it emphasises the food as opposed to diverting your eyes to the dish! By the way, there were more prawns than shown, its just that she got to them before I got the shot!

Now we were all set for dinner......

...... and we were eating alone!

image.png

Ready for dinner then? That mixed font size, half italics and reversed 'E' tequila really annoyed me. An example of pretentious design for design's sake and is neither cool, classy nor elegant.

image.png

The menu was OK. Nothing special but plenty of choices to make the most of the all-you-can-eat offer! The normal price for walk-ins was still a very reasonable 399Baht each but we were eating as part of our deal.

Now when I see a menu these days, I immediately think, "would @slobberchops like this?" as I think he and I would have fairly similar tastes and for this menu, that would be a resounding, "Yes." So a fusion menu for the tourists but enough Thai interest to keep the wife happy!

image.png

Pepperoni pizza. Thin and crispy base, lightly seasoned and the pepperoni actually tasted like pepperoni and not the rubbery crap they put on the big chain pizzas. Yes, I had some chips, shoot me!

image.png

More Tom Yum Gai with some fresh quickly blanched veggies and a very nice chilli dip!

image.png

A really nice and tasty version of a Ceasers salad.

image.png

Deep-fried Squid. Salmon? don't mind if I do!

We had a few other dishes too but as time was running out and the wife was getting pissed off with me, I put the camera away until the desert......
This chocolate lave cake was absolutely sublime. So much so, I had three, and they made the mistake of giving me free use of the ice cream chest! This was obviously the chef's piecé de resisténce as they came over a little arty on the presentation but damn was it good!

image.png

And that was dinner! Really tasty and not a bad dish amongst them! After dinner, I went out to 7/11, bought a few beers and after a quick Onsen, went back to the room to chill and watch a movie!

The room

Now before I post the pictures, this was just a superior room. We wanted a bath and for some reason, the top rooms didn't have one and having not had a proper bath for a number of months. We chose the room for this reason alone! Bit no problem. It was a nice corner room.

image.png

Big bed and the quilt wasn't too heavy that you got too hot, and not too light that you needed to turn the aircon down! The pillows were perfect for me and it wasn't too hard which is extremely unusual in Thailand. Apologies for the wife, it's actually illegal to take a photo in Thailand that doesn't have the wife on!

image.png

A desk, or makeup table as it turned out with a big mirror and some 'cool' art on the wall.

image.png

A nice little alcove with a seat for.....err.....sitting!

image.png

Ok, enough. You get the impression. Clean, simple, modern and completely bland and unremarkable!

Would I go back?

Absolutely not! Don't get me wrong. It was nice and fantastic value but there are thousands of nice places just waiting to be visited around Bangkok and the rest of Thailand and this place didn't have enough to make me want to come back! Except perhaps for the chocolate lava!

I would however recommend it to anyone visiting, especially at a decent price as its only 300 metres from the skytrain and close to the very vibrant downtown area of On-Nut.

In the next edition, Nathen visits a 'proper' posh place ;-)

Thanks for dropping by, and I wish everyone best wishes, health and happiness.

I don't see too many chips there, we live off them, don't they realise that?

Where the toilets?

Thai Breakfast's (went I went) were terrible. You don't have rice and noodles at that time in the morning!

Lol...Ordered 3 lots of chips and you're spot on about the breakfast generally unless you're staying in a really top class hotel!

I think my new @slobberchips edibility index is totally vindicated by your comments mate. Thank you!

As for the toilets, I completely forgot to take some pics so no, I'm not holding them back for a future post lol
