Chilihead Diary: Chantico's Coconut Hot Sauce

I keep devouring sauces from Chantico's new line of Lipetsk Crafters and today I want to share my impressions of their new product Chantico's Coconut Hot Sauce, an extremely spicy sauce on Ghost Pepper, aka Bhut Jolokia, which made it to the Guinness Book of Records in 2007 as the world's spiciest pepper (over 1 million on the Scoville scale).

From the name it is clear that the main flavor is coconut, or rather mashed coconut, for a brighter tropical mood supplemented with a mixture of nectarine, banana and lime puree (which enhances the spice), orange juice, red onion, garlic and spices (cumin and zira). It uses apple cider vinegar and potassium sorbate as a preservative (so it will last a very long time in the fridge) and follows the "gluten free & vegan friendly" format.

I have to say at once - Ghost Pepper has a very interesting, fruity smell, not as bright as Carolina Ripper's, and a very peculiar sharpness. It's not spicy, but it's burning. And it burns like hell, so for the tests the choice was made on the products which "soften" the spice, namely pasta and pizza. The sauce proved itself as a real fighter with hot pasta and added "creamy" notes to the pictures, mashed fruit was just as cool with chicken, but it worked even better with the classic pizza.

We tried two variants. The first, as a normal sauce - on a ready pizza, and it is better on a hot, so that the sauce spreads on a slice as much as possible and goes from cold "hard seven" to the sharpness of a good eight, and the second - we added a little ketchup, which smeared the base before baking.

The second version turned out to be a real bomb. Hard cheese and mozzarella mixed with the creamy flavor of coconut and the spiciness of peppers gave a really unique flavor, and tomatoes are perfectly on top of the stinginess which made the pizza something very dangerous for untrained receptors. As a seasoned chilihead who has eaten more than one bottle of sauces on the current record holder, Carolina, I had a lot of fun, but I'm afraid that not everyone will appreciate such an experience.

As another culinary experiment, we decided to try it with regular fried dumlings and nuggets from supermarket, and it turned out pretty good, too. The sauce melts quickly when hot and is perfectly absorbed by the dumplings thoroughly heated in the microwave, and as an appetizer for strong alcohol and dark beer (which also goes perfectly with the creamy flavor) it goes great. Even too much so.

Anyway Chantico's Coconut Hot Sauce turned out to be another successful experiment by this Russian chili enthusiasts and in the past couple of months I got hooked on it, so I'll be ordering more.

Damn tasty exotic and a great gift for connoisseurs of natural spice.
