Gardening Report - April 2021
Here I am with another gardening report, showing the community what's been done and how things are evolving at this time of the year.
Although the weather is still not what is should be at the end of April, these couple of days it looked like we're on the right track. It's starting to warm up, which is much needed. We've had plenty of rain, no need for more, warm temperature we could use though.
Garlic
In my last gardening post called Gardening Tips and Tricks - Onion And Garlic I shared some tips and tricks about how to sow onion and garlic sets. This was a new technique for us, we've never tried it before and although we knew it's a good one, we waited to see if it works. Today I can confirm you, that it's 100% safe and usable.
This is how the garlic looks like after two weeks. We're really satisfied, couldn't be happier really. The onion needs more time as it wasn't green yet when we sowed it, but in a week or two we're going to see growth.
Seedlings
In the meantime there are other works that need to be done in time, one of which is transplanting seedlings. We use these plastic trays as it's the easiest way to grow seedlings.
We start with the smallest, that has 104 holes and when the seedlings are big enough and have roots, we transplant them in the big one, to give them more room and soil. This is very important as once the seedlings overgrow the tiny pot, growing is slowing down.
The process is easy. You fill the tray with soil, make a hole in the middle of each pot and place the seedlings in with a lot of care so you don't damage the roots. These are hairline roots, definitely not strong enough and highly damageable. On the photo above you can see those tiny little hairline roots.
Beans
The place for beans is ready, beans are already sowed, a little bit of time is needed for them to grow and warm weather of course.
Fighting Weeds
For a few years, this is how we fight weeds. This foil is stopping weeds from growing and saves us from a lot of work and trouble. These are the sheets we roll out every year and when the time is right for planting seedlings outside, we just make the holes and place the seedlings in them.
Pinning these sheets to the ground is not an easy job, especially if there's wind. Usually it's not windy, actually it's rarely windy here, but on the day we did this, it was windy. That's life.
So we put some stones, bricks on the sheets till we could pin them down.
These are the pins we use and the holes we made in the previous years, that's where the pins should go each year.
We did everything according to the instruction, respected the recommended distances.
But in the process, this happened, so some extra pins were needed.
This is the place where the gladiolus bulbs are now, I can't wait to see them flowering.
This is where the cucumbers will be. The poles are still to be put here and the net, but that only later.
This is all for now may not seem much but all in the right time. You can't rush nature 🙂
