Why You Should Be Careful Who You Listen To.

Knowledge is like money; the more you get, the more you want.png

I recently did a post about 7 Principles To Live on Purpose and Make the Most of Your Time.

I want to talk more today about the first principle I mentioned in that post: Be careful who you listen to.

There Is A Lot of Noise Out There.

Believe me, there is a lot of noise out there. Just announce the fact that you have decided to start your own business, or maybe you want to buy bitcoin or any goal that you have in mind, and you will start hearing the noise.

Noise.png

Everybody wants to give you advice. Even if you just want to do some research, there is no shortage of opinions and everybody is an "expert". Yet it seems like everybody is contradicting one another.

One person will tell you to only buy Bitcoin and stay away from any altcoins and the next one will tell you to spread your risk by buying altcoins as well.

One person has held EOS for the last 3 years but has suddenly lost faith in EOS. Yet, just the next person will tell you to keep holding on to your EOS.

Who do you listen to?

The 3 "Types" Of Support You Can Expect.

There are basically three types of support (advice) you can expect:

  • The self-proclaimed "expert". This is normally where the most noise is coming from and can sometimes even be compared with fans on the stands at a sports field.
  • The "doom-profit". This is normally the kind of person who can only point out everything that will go wrong.
  • People who actually really care. Unless it is actually their field of expertise, they tend to rather be quiet and slow with their advice until they have all the facts.

Let's look at these types one by one:

The Self-Proclaimed Expert.

There is no shortage of these. This "type" can actually be subdivided into two sub-categories.

The first is the type we all know too well. Enter any search term into your browser (especially regarding online business or making money online) and you'll find them in abundance. These are the people who would encourage you to part from your hard-earned money in exchange for overnight riches. I don't see the need to go into more detail. I'm sure we all know them (and to stay away from them...lol).

The second "category" (if you can call it that) are people that I can almost compare with the fans at a sports match. These people can be found online (in communities, forums, etc.) or even in your own family or circle of friends.

It seems as if they just know everything about everything. And they don't hesitate in telling you exactly what you should do and shouldn't do. And if you don't immediately take action and do as they advise you to do, it's almost as if they feel insulted...

Yet, if you start digging a little deeper after such a person gave you some "fail-proof" advice about your investments, you realize that he/she doesn't have a single investment of his own (or even failed miserably at his own in the past)...

The "Doom-Profit".

Oh my...when listening to these people, you'll never do anything!

No matter what you want to do, they will tell you how you will fail. They will point out everything that can go wrong. Oh...and don't forget all the "what if's"...

They will point out all the risks and dangers. They will tell you how they have failed. Or if they haven't failed themselves, they will at least know someone who has failed.

People Who Actually Really Care.

These people can also be online and/or even within your own family or circle of friends.

These are people who are passionate about the same topics as you and they really want to see you succeed. They really know what they are talking about. They've been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

They are willing to share their experience. They have learned from making mistakes and can help to prevent you from making the same mistakes. This is the kind of advice that can help you to achieve success faster.

This is also the type of person that, if he/she doesn't really know much about the topic, they would rather keep their opinion to themselves or even help you to do proper research. In this way, they would rather gather the facts, improve their knowledge in the process, and then share their honest opinion.

This is the type of person you want to listen to. If they are aware (or become aware) of any risks or pitfalls along the way, their advice is well thought through and you should pay attention.

This is the type of person that is not just going to tell you what you want to hear. They will share the facts with you...both positive and negative.

With such people, you can form a "master-mind". There is power in this as you can tap into their minds and benefit from their knowledge and expertise. This will reduce your risk and increase your potential for success.

What Should You Do Now?

Now that you know who you should listen to, there are only three things left to do.

  1. Decide exactly what it is that you want to do and why.
  2. Gather all the information you need.
  3. Once you have all the information you need and everything points in a positive direction, take action and start doing what needs to be done!

There's nothing wrong with saying "I don't know" but some people don't want to do that. I've been known to tell family members who come to me for advice, that it may take time for me to do a deep dive on something I need more knowledge about, and will get back to them when that's done. Better that, than giving out wrong information.

I totally agree with you. And I bet family members do not hesitate to come to you for that same reason!

Thank you for your valuable input! I do appreciate it!

Thanks for sharing this post with others! You have done it at the perfect time... Why?

Well, Bitcoin is rallying up, and when it's doing that, all the "experts" that were sleeping during the last 3.5 years are coming back with all their knowledge to share with others... :)

As I was here before, I have some shitcoins that I didn't want to sell for peanuts, but I do "following" things about them... And I put "following" in quotes as there was nothing to follow for over 2-3 years, as nobody was doing anything with those coins...

And now... Surprise, surprise, everyone is re-starting their stuff promising high earning, pumps to the moon, and other things...

Well... Not this time... Don't count on me... :)

This post was so on point & I loved how you broke everything down, too. :) It is amazing how these types are popping up on Twitterland as well as the blockchain, especially lately....

Now that Bitcoin is doing so well (over 19K as I type!), the so called "experts" are dropping links & advice everywhere & I even noticed spam "airdrop" tweets are in abundance. This is where people HAVE to be careful as well....

I am excited for Bitcoin to blast through 20K but I will never take advice at face value. I am not an expert by any means, but occasionally I will share my knowledge & always encourage people to do their own research. Critical thinking is important...

Also, in my experience, sometimes something that will work for me (like a strategy or investment) won't necessarily work for someone else...we all have different budgets, wealth (or lack thereof), & expertise. So it's important for people to do that research to see what they can reasonably do as well as educate themselves continually as cryptocurrency "rules" changes all the time...

I really enjoyed reading this. Anyone investing or trading for the first time should see this, because it's easy to get duped into things in the beginning....thanks for sharing your knowledge! :) Have an awesome day!🧡

Thank you for this very descriptive comment, Jenn. I appreciate it so much!

It is exactly as you say, these so-called "experts" are popping up everywhere and their links are all over the show!

I am excited for Bitcoin to blast through 20K but I will never take advice at face value. I am not an expert by any means, but occasionally I will share my knowledge & always encourage people to do their own research. Critical thinking is important...

I cannot agree with you more! This is so true! When the time is right it is good to share your knowledge (sometimes even needed and necessary), but people have to do their own research. I almost want to call it the "sad part" is that when people "see money" it's sometimes as if they lose the ability to think rationally...maybe out of the fear of missing out...

Bitcoin is not something to just jump on the bandwagon when the price goes up. It will punish you! You need to develop an interest. It must be something you study and follow on an ongoing basis. As you say they need to "educate themselves continually as cryptocurrency "rules" changes all the time..."

Also, it is one thing to buy and hold for the long term. But even then, you need to know that there will be pull-backs, and don't do silly things when that happens.

As far as trading is concerned, I think you need to be very cautious now before you open a buy position. Nothing just goes up in a straight line...

Also, in my experience, sometimes something that will work for me (like a strategy or investment) won't necessarily work for someone else...we all have different budgets, wealth (or lack thereof), & expertise.

Also true and very wise words.

Thank you for your kind words and you must have an awesome day too!

Well said Jaco, and great advice about who to listen to, you just proved to be in the right category yourself, and nicely pointed in the end to take action with SET, Hiveguide and IAAC, and thanks for the mention.

It's always funny to hear those self proclaimed experts talk with certainty about a subject you know all about, then you ask them a question that a layman mostly not knows the answer to and they just shows to not know what they are talking about.

That is usually where I just leave anything they say and walk away, trying to convince them is in most cases pointless, I did try that when I was younger with very limited result.

But an actual expert does not have anything to prove so they don't need to shout it out, most will share if asked though, and that is when we need to listen.

Keep up your great and stay awesome.

Thank you for the kind words and it is a pleasure mentioning you. I think you do awesome work with your project!

There is a saying that "if a fool rather keeps quiet, even a wise man may take him for being intelligent".

That is usually where I just leave anything they say and walk away, trying to convince them is in most cases pointless, I did try that when I was younger with very limited result.

You are wise to just leave whatever they say and just walk away. It is not worth wasting your energy on reasoning with such a person. And as you say, an expert knows what he knows and doesn't have to prove anything.

Thank you once again for your great comment and have an awesome day!

Thanks so much for this post. I have meet alot of all three types of people. I am quiet and just sit back and listen, gathering information so I can do my on research. Then I will make my move.

I am glad you enjoyed reading my post.

You are very wise to sit back and listen, gathering all the information, and then doing your own research. It is like eating an orange. When you get the orange, you peal it and get rid of the pips. You don't eat all of it. You just keep what is useful. That is exactly what you are doing! Well done!

As a young man, I was in the police force for some years. We had a motto that said "don't be too concerned about the big guy making a lot of noise. Worry about that small guy calmly sitting at the back, saying nothing..."

Maybe you are that quiet person sitting at the back...not making a lot of noise. But you gather all the information and then you get results! And it's the results that count, not what you say...

Thank you for your comment! I do appreciate it!

You shared a lot of true things аnd facts. Definitely listening to the advice of people who are not aware of something is wrong.
The truth is that everyone controls their own lives and the choices they make.
I hope one day it is worth all the effort!

The truth is that everyone controls their own lives and the choices they make.

I fully agree with you on that. You can give the best advice possible, at the end of the day you still have no control over the choices other people make. Everyone controls their own lives and choices.

Likewise, we can listen to what other people say, but then it is also our choice about who we are going to listen to.

Thank you for your comment, I really do appreciate it!
