Market Friday: Mercury Drug

MERCURY DRUG, BAGUIO CITY PHILIPPINES
Nakasisiguro Gamot Ay Laging Bago

To continue my post last Wednesday about Session Road. My mom told me to buy the medicine for my dad. I went to the pharmacy called Mecury Drug which is one of the famous drug stores located here in the Phliippines.

History
According to their Website This drug store began from 100 Php and a bottle of sulfathiazole. Sulfathiazole was considered as a wonder drug after the 1945 War. Mariano Que who was an employee of a drugstore before the war knew that the Filipinos would need that "miracle" drug to cure some diseases and illnesses. He only had 100 Php after World War II and he then decided to buy a bottle of sulfathiazole from a peddler. He then sold the tablets by piece to make it affordable to the people. With the profit that he made, he eventually bought other medicines and a pushcart, which he used to load his stock of medicines. He was able to save enough to put up the first Mercury Drug store on March 1, 1945 in Bambang street. Today, it has over 1,200 stores natiowide.

It was actually my first time reading about the history of the drugstore and I find it really inspirational that he was able to grow it into something this big starting from humble beginnings.

There's a huge plastic barrier in the counters. and a lot of signages in the walls and the floors. I really was wondering why the people were not staying inside the boxes, but at least there's a distance between them.

My OCD came out and I stayed inside the box even though I was the only customer.

While waiting for medicine that I bought, I was taking photos of some of their signages. No mask no entry and physical distancing is being implied to prevent Covid19 from spreading. This branch that is located at Porta Vaga Mall, Session Road operation hours are from 5:00 AM to 12:00 Midnight. They are not 24 hours already.

They were also selling different kinds of products like food and personal hygiene products. Buying Medicines here are cheap because they also sell generic version.

Nice that you told the story of how Mercury Drug got started, interesting.
I have been to Philippines a couple of times, and have visited those stores, mostly to buy snacks.

Such an inspiring story of their beginning. Most old stores like that come from humble beginnings when people had work ethics and they knew that in order to achieve a goal, you had to work hard. Inch by inch...

I'm OCD like that too. It has a square outlined to stand in it. So stand in it. How hard is that? At least people are listening to most of the other rules. I am so glad you made a follow-up post on this. I was really impressed with the entire story!I love that you went full circle with it!Thank you for providing different elements to the cultural exchange we provide here. I can say that so many people are now enjoying not only the markets and places visited, but the different cultures than their own, showing off how we are so different, but, also, showing how many things we have in common.
