El fútbol en mi vida | Soccer in my life

Since I was 14 years old I've enjoyed soccer with all my being, running in a field for me is one of the best things I can do to drain the negative emotions and feelings from my body, I feel that finding myself facing a goal and scoring goals causes me a very crazy euphoria inside and whether I'm playing a game or being a spectator of professional teams I feel the same level of euphoria and emotion.

The craziest thing in this world in my life is that I started out as an offensive player on the field (Center Forward or Left Forward) but there was a time in my life when my greatest excitement and ambition was under the three posts.

Yes, my greatest achievements in soccer have been as a goalkeeper.

Mi vida como portero | My life as a goalkeeper

I must say that I never expected that one of my great passions in the world of soccer would be to be a goalkeeper, since I did not even have the aptitude to be one, but I remember the words of my coach at that time, he told me that he was going to train me to be the best goalkeeper but that he needed me to have discipline and be strong, since that world was not easy and he was absolutely right.

The difficulty of the goalkeeper's job is simply absurd, since any role can be wrong and nothing happens, but if the goalkeeper makes a mistake, a goal is scored, and games are won with goals.

Besides, we are the solitary role, the role that celebrates the goal alone and that almost nobody remembers if he has a good day but that everybody remembers when it comes to criticizing mistakes and failures, so it is a role for the brave.

All this that I tell you I lived in the memory that I bring today as gratitude, because in that same game I shouted, I was moved, I cried, I was angry with myself too much and in the end... the glory came.

The day I knew what it was like to be a goalkeeper

Life gave me incredible moments being a goalkeeper, but nothing like the time I won a district tournament with a team called Mr. Soccer that we had created for the area where I live; our coach was a person with a very strong character, with a very wide vision of the game and with an incredible gift for teaching, in just 1 year he made me go from knowing nothing about the world of goalkeeping to being an unstoppable goalkeeper.

In that final, I remember that the rival team only took 6 minutes to score the first goal; a ball that I could stop, but motivated to the nerves I had that day by the size of the commitment, did not allow me to react in time, that goal made me put my feet on the ground and understand that we were already losing the final.

Luckily, my team's lead was incredible, so it only took 10 minutes to tie the game, then we went up almost finishing the first half, so we could go to the break with good spirits but focused on the fact that the game was not over yet.

I remember that a torrential rain started to fall that almost did not allow me to hold the ball, besides increasing the speed of the ball when it was kicked.

Everything was going great, but even though we were winning 2-1, more and more the enemy team was pressing, until at one point, something terrible happened... a ball came out from the corner in a center after the first touch in a corner, a very close ball, however I decided not to jump completely because I calculated that the ball was going long and it ended up crashing into the second post (the one on my left) and going in, so the tie came and there were only 2 minutes left in the game.

I felt the hatred of my teammates for that blunder that now prevented us from getting the immediate victory, we tried to get that goal in those two long and terrible minutes, but it was useless, the final whistle blew and I collapsed.

Tears kept coming down my face, I was frustrated, I hit the ground a thousand times because of the stupid mistake I had made, I remember that everyone on my team turned their back on me except one person... my team captain.

More than the captain, he was a close friend, I remember he picked me up, looked me in the eye and said: "Stop that shit! Yes, you messed up, but now it's YOUR turn to take us to victory, clean yourself up, wipe your tears and stop those penalties", then he handed me the captain's band so if I won the game, the one who would raise the cup would be me, I simply had no other option, I had to win to redeem myself yes or yes.

It was a difficult penalty shoot-out, but I was very focused; we covered first. In the first kick to the goal, I deflected the ball, a powerful shot to the right but I could not get it out of the goal and the first opposite goal came, I breathed and told myself I could do it, I had already touched the first ball.

My team soon scored the first penalty in favor, so that filled me with energy; in the second shot at the goal I stopped the ball completely by shooting to the left, I guessed the shot completely and the euphoria began, I felt that my heart was going to come out but I knew that I could not let myself be carried away by the adrenaline, so I breathed again and concentrated again.

On the third shot they tried to trick me by kicking the center of the goal with little speed to make a "mocking" or classy shot, but on that shot a voice in my mind told me that I had to stand on the center, so I did and I caught that penalty leaving my team just 1 goal away from being crowned champions.

The player who had to score the winning goal was one of our best kickers, he always used to take the penalties walking and it took him between 3 and 5 seconds to get to the ball, when he started to walk, I started to breathe deeply and closed my eyes, only to hear the end, when the impact of the foot with the ball sounds, the next thing I could hear, was my own scream, the victory was ours.

The person you see to the right of me (I'm the one carrying the cup, obviously) is the captain of my team. I will remember that moment all my life as the day my world fell apart and I put it back together again, the day I summoned up the courage to win, the day I didn't let myself be defeated by my mistakes?

The day I became a true goalkeeper.

Saludos!
