Tales of the Urban Explorer: Hays Colours

Talk about a pain in the arse! We drew up to Hays Colours expecting little resistance.

The little history I managed to find was from another explorer and tells me it's been empty since 2006. In that case, it should be a complete falling down wreck and easy to access.

1_IMG_5362_1.jpg

Hays Colours was a dye and pigment manufacturer and distributor based in Halifax. In 2001 it was bought by Albion Colours who in turn were bought out by Brenntag Colours in 2006. They've since moved premises and left this building dormant. - Text Source

Not so. The front looked well sealed, and the buildings though in a forlorn-looking state were boarded up or had that spiky-looking fencing around them.

Besides that, a row of terraced houses guarded over the old works like a bunch of sentries, just waiting for us to move and do the wrong thing.

2_IMG_5363_2.jpg

After looking around, finding sod all and looking a mite suspicious to onlookers I said to @dizzydiscovery, “Fuck this, let’s hit the back”

The back” meant a walk down a meandering public footpath and then scrambling up this filthy hill to the outside wall.

29_IMG_5390_29.jpg

Things would have been OK except it had recently down poured soaking the ground and forcing us to get our jeans damp. My legs are not so lanky that I get up there without some proper climbing.

30_IMG_5391_30.jpg

’it might not look steep but trust me, it was. Add the rain which brings mud and it's not pleasant trying to ascend this embankment

After shimmying along the edge of the old factory and hoping we were going the right away, it opened up and we found ourselves on the right side of the spiky fencing.

13_IMG_5374_13.jpg

A fox came bounding past us and vanished into the undergrowth. Hopefully, we were not in the realms of its den as I didn't fancy an angry vixen snarling at us.

3_IMG_5364_3.jpg

The clouds were looming again and I hoped the rain would stay away until we were at least inside.

4_IMG_5365_4.jpg

Inside was not proving exciting at least initially. Some piles of junk and holes in the roof.

5_IMG_5366_5.jpg

As well as bigger holes in the floor you could fall through.

6_IMG_5367_6.jpg

7_IMG_5368_7.jpg

Sometimes you have to concede defeat when attempting to climb a ladder. I know.., I know… I should have tried harder.

8_IMG_5369_8.jpg

9_IMG_5370_9.jpg

This was all beginning to look very derpy. I did find this cool-looking switch, complete with rust and is that an old industrial sized dryer of some sort?

10_IMG_5371_10.jpg

11_IMG_5372_11.jpg

Was this it, how depressingly dull! How do we get inside this adjoining building?

12_IMG_5373_12.jpg

Even though we were inside the compound area, it was tightly sealed but we could see an entrance from the other side.

This meant backtracking around to that slippery hill and shimmying to the other side of this mass of buildings.

A little climbing an eight-foot wall, with nice bits sticking out for our feet and we were in. Getting down that same wall was another story. I am not particularly good with heights.

15_IMG_5376_15.jpg

14_IMG_5375_14.jpg

16_IMG_5377_16.jpg

Up these steel steps took us into another building that initially looked about as interesting as the last one.

19_IMG_5380_19.jpg

18_IMG_5379_18.jpg

Would there be anything in these old drawers besides a clump of fresh air?

Now what was this sitting on the floor.., I looked a little closer.

20_IMG_5381_20.jpg

It’s an estimate to install some flame-proof circuit breakers. I guess fires are a big thing at a fabric company.

It’s from December 1979, they want over £900 and £98 of it is labour? Fuck me... I was barely out of school and earning £31 a week then.

I found another one floating on the floor nearby, this one was from ICI.

21_IMG_5382_21.jpg

Not quite as compelling but from February 1980. Only 40+ years ago, but it's better than the other boring shit I was looking at.

22_IMG_5383_22.jpg

There was some kind of lift to the top floor in the distance but we decided to take the stairs.

26_IMG_5387_26.jpg

Very yellow and metal, we were not going to fall through these.

24_IMG_5385_24.jpg

23_IMG_5384_23.jpg

It was bare up there, with little to take in.

25_IMG_5386_25.jpg

A nice view from the window, hopefully, none of those sentries spotted us.

27_IMG_5388_27.jpg

We gave the cellar area a miss. It looked a little grim and burned out down there.

We are not used to warning signs during explores. Generally, there are poles, nails, metal sheets, and metal wiring all waiting to impale you.

28_IMG_5389_28.jpg

We left feeling a little deflated. There was still one area we had missed that may have contained the real treasure.

It was late morning and with THREE successes under our belts, we felt the day was only going to get better.

It was time to leave Halifax and enter the mighty city king of dereliction, Bradford, and rendezvous with @goblinknackers for the rest of the planned venues.

A little too colourful at times, but I can't be arsed tinkering with the filter I use. It's mostly OK.

Wow, I would have expected to see more evidence of squatters in the area where there was an adequate roof. It looks like it was quite the mess. The pictures were good even if it didn't live up to the expectations of some of the others.

The squatters are generally in the city areas. This is on the edges of a town.., so none to be seen.

Couldn't resit looking up Allen West and Co Ltd Brighton - makers of motor control gear and switchgear and founded in 1910.

They expanded in 1939 and in WWII the company produced radar equipment, electrical switchgear and motor control gear for the war effort.

Not surprisingly they are now listed as being in Liquidations with their last annual return made up to 26 March 2016

There's an interesting picture of the before and after on Pinterest.

That image of the gear came out well, very close up and detailed. I am trying to focus in on things like this. It's all a learning thing. !WINE

How could anyone resist those golden stairs to glory!!! Shame there was nothing there.

You ever thought about getting a drone for high up bits and crazy aerial views? That high up shot made me think of it?

The drone.., yeah it crosses my mind, but they are noisy bees and I'm a ninja (or try to be). It is true, some great shots would come of it. !WINE

They are noisy little feckers. Not so much when they are up high and out of earshot but yeah, Its something you forget when you look at footage and its all slomo and ambient tunes, lol!

You don't get to pick...it's like urban decay hunting...hit or miss. Sometimes good to bring your own bandages..

Very cool look to the factory, and a pretty good view from that top window! Sorry you guys didn't get to see more cool shit on the inside itself, but I definitely enjoyed checking these out!

Yes, there was another area, and we might have been able to get in. It's a case of how long do you spend in the same area. We had 10 venues to visit that day. It's long and tiring.. but great exercise, !WINE

10 in a day?! Holy cow, that would be a hell of an adventure. I hadn't ever considered how many you do in a day haha. That's super cool!

That's pushing it, but it can be done during the summer when we have longer days.

That mind your head sign was nice. The only nice thing in the whole pile of rubbish.

It was a bit crap considering all the hassle we had getting in there.
