Making A Living Or Making A Life?

avatar

Why are you getting online day after day and posting content on your Hive blog? Why are you spending hours upon hours reading, upvoting, and commenting on other people's posts? What's your motivation for spending so much time married to your computer? What's your why?

Have you asked yourself any of those questions lately? Have you wondered if you are just spinning your wheels? Have you thought that maybe it's just not worth it?

If you are in it for the money, there are so many other ways that you could earn more than a few cents a day? At the rate you start out, it would take you weeks just to earn enough for a pizza, much less replace your salary. How can a few tokens impact your life in a positive way? Making a living online is hard...especially if you are trying to do it while you are already working full time. And it's not going to happen overnight. it's probably going to take years before you could replace your salary. Are you really going to work that long for little or no return?

But, what if...

Could you really?

With the right mindset, you can actually CHANGE YOUR LIFE! You have to realize that it is a whole new paradigm. Instead of spending an hour or two (or more) each day travelling to and from work, your commute can be from one side of your house to the other. Imagine the money you could save on fuel, work apparel, and child care. Instead of spending eight to ten hours a day with your coworkers, you can have quality time with your family on their schedule. How would you like to be the parent that gets to go on your kid's school field trips (or better yet, take your own field trips and/or homeschool so that you know what your child is being taught)? Instead of spending your vacation as a staycation and checking out the local attractions, you could be taking your family to Disneyworld or taking a romantic cruise for your second honeymoon? Instead of working the 40/50/40 plan (work forty hours a day, 50 weeks a year [with two whole weeks of stayacation, woohoo!] for forty years) and then depending on Socialist Insecurity which will pay you about half of what you can barely get by on now for the rest of your life (if it is even still around by then), you can retire when you want and make more money after you retire than you were making while you were working. Instead of working when someone else says you need to be there and getting paid as little as they think you are worth, you can set your own hours and make all of the profit.

Right now, you're probably saying, "That sounds great, Garrey, but how long it is going to take the get there?" My response to that question is simple and twofold..."Does it matter how long it took once you get there?" and "Are you going to get there doing what you are doing right now?" If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got.

Do you see how changing your perspective can change your life? Are you willing to invest in your future and go into business for yourself? Are you willing to reinvest all of your current online income for several years in order to accumulate a sustainable, recurring income? Are you willing to do what it takes now in order to attain security for the rest of your life? Are you making a living...or making a life?

I once had a customer who looked at a machine with a friend of his. When I explained the terms to him, he looked at his friend and said "I will be 73 years old when this 5 year lease ends".

So I asked him how old he would be in 5 years if he didnt lease the machine?

You bring up a great point. We are seeing a paradigm shift and even a couple hours a day can net rewards in a few years.

It is like they say, if you work you ass off part time and could be a millionaire in 5 years, would you?

While there is no guarantee, the ability to build and expand within the crypto space is like none I have ever seen.

Great anecdote...They say the only guarantees in life are death and taxes. The other thing I can guarantee is that if you do not build your business (whatever that business is), you'll be in the same boat 5 years from now (if death hasn't visited you yet). 😁

Thank you for taking the time to read and comment on this post.

I have asked myself a similar question a lot of times during my life... and it was something like:

Do I want to live to work or work to live?

My parents had a different idea about my migration to another country and they couldn't understand my logic... lol... When they were young, the idea was to go somewhere abroad to find a good job and work...

I had a different idea... To find a nice place for living and raising my child, and eventually, work will appear... Of course, I had my online work at the moment when I have made this huge decision, and that helped me a lot... I could pick a place where I want to live, as I wasn't connected to any physical location... That is a big advantage of working online and working for yourself...

In the end (I hope that it's not the end yet... :) ), I'm not a millionaire, but I live in a beautiful place, with a great climate, weather, solid education for my son, and my family is happy...

Thank you for sharing your experience. That is exactly the point I was trying to make and you are a perfect example. By changing your mindset, you have chosen to work for yourself, live a life not controlled by other people, and receive all of the fruits of your labor (instead of giving most of the profit to someone else). Keep up the great work and thank you for being an inspiration to others...including me.

As long as your Focused on what you want to get out of it, it does not matter how long because you know you will get there at some point down the road. Great Post

Exactly, Aaron. I wish everyone could see that and make that their goal.

This post was really thought provoking in many ways & yes, I have asked myself a lot of these questions, especially this past year.

Recently, I finally had the means to leave my offline hotel job & let me tell you, I feel freer than I ever had. While being self employed takes a lot more work & drive, I am happier doing this. It is my passion & sitting in a cubicle for hours every day was NOT. It brought down my spirits & I was barely making enough money to make ends meet.

I finally decided that this was not the way to live. We are here to enjoy our life, not be a slave to it. And I am certainly NOT going to depend on the government!!

Just having concrete goals & showing up every day is half the battle, then the hard work comes in. I AM willing to do this because I love it and I know I will have a better future because of it! :)

Awesome post, my friend. Thanks for sharing your insights! :)

Thanks for taking the time to read this post and share your story. We need to get more of these stories out there so that others see that it is possible if you are willing to do the work and take the risk. It's a better life with more freedom and more control of the outcome.

I like where you went with this post. I think it's a good question to ask for those who want to build quality time with their family and loved ones. I think if there's one good thing about the lockdown, it's that I was forced to take a long hard look at what I really want my day to be like 😉👍🏼

Thank you for stopping by and for your encouragement. While I am not entirely sure of all of the underlying factors of this pandemic, I have definitely enjoyed the time working from home and focusing on my online business ventures. I could become accustomed to this very quickly. Now I am working toward being able to tell my boss I am not coming back once the furlough is lifted. I hope others are working toward that same goal (or the goal of telling your boss he can't pay you enough to come back to work, whether you are still working or not).

I have seen and lived the alternatives. The only reason I would take a J.O.B. right now is to bring in money to support building my business. Trouble is just like you said, the hours they expect you to work would interfere with what I am trying to do. I am grateful that I am in a position to not have to do that. I feel what I am doing here is totally worth it!

Thanks for sharing your story. I hope it will inspire others that it is possible to "live the dream" of becoming unemployable (no way I would work for anybody else).

Yep, your perspective, hard work and patience is it takes if you want to quit your job and work for yourself at home. I know why most people quit, but that doesn't make it easier to understand why. The time it takes depends on how much you put into it, no 2 people work on the same timeline. The main thing is you don't give in and work to get to your goals no matter how long it takes.

You make very interesting points and I must be making a life as opposed to making a living. I do work but even that is by choice. I work to make extra money for my business so I can stay home and sleep in later. But even my work outside the home is close to being at home. I'm at my daughters house to care for my grandson while she goes to work. I take my business with me and find time when I'm not caring for the baby. I do small tasks that won't be interrupted by the baby. So I get to work my business and spend time with family at the same time.

Perspective matters. Otherwise, it would not make sense how much time and effort we put into something we do. When I read other posts and watch videos, I can feel that they can make way more money doing something else than making content and interacting with others.

If you put things in perspective and long term goals, it makes sense and the possibilities are endless. Thank you @theroad2freedom for sharing this.
