Short and Sweet - Which One Are You ???

Hi Folks

I want to tell you a story

When I was at my first Art School, doing a diploma in Fine Arts I noticed some interesting things.

Well Art does that lol

But this revolved around levels of improvement in individuals, both artistically and personally
Now I was surrounded by some very good art producers indeed, as well as some not so good. Those that took it seriously and those that looked at it as a hobby.

At the end of the 3 years I took stock of my cohort and made some rather startling discoveries about who had, in my opinion, progressed the most during the 3 years.

One of the students there was a very accomplished art producer and it was fun to watch his work throughout the time, he had a wit in his work that made every piece a joy to look at and to participate with. However, what I saw him produce at the end of the 3 years was not that different in style and skill than he was producing at the beginning of the course. The techniques that he used were the same, the subject matter was always current and relevant, but it was always external, never internal, self-reflection, the skill with which this artist executed his work was exactly the same. This student in fact had not ever pushed himself out of his comfort zone, he had not taken on board the whole plethora of opportunities that he was presented with throughout the 3 years to help him develop as an artist and as a person.

On the other hand, there was another art producer that at the beginning of the course couldn’t put pen to paper, brush to canvas or hands to sculpture. He was actually doing the course because he could think of nothing else to do. By the end of the course this person had developed skills with a Brush, his pencil under his guidance was able to produce some pretty lifelike drawings and his hands were far more co0mfortable while sculpting in clay, wood, stone etc. He had also found where his passion lay and that was with Photography. His work in that area really excelled and demonstrated not only a personal style and growth but also demonstrated his passion for technique. Bearing in mind this was still at a time where photography required dark room and chemical processing, He just loved working with his negatives to produce some very outstanding Photographs. In fact, this person took on board a great deal of information and skill opportunities that he was presented with.

Now out of the two art producers I mention, The one who’s works were exceptional and was already an accomplished Artist and then the one that was still producing under par work (but excelling in Photography), the one that I would definitely give the Award for stepping out of their comfort zone would be number 2.

Number 1 did nothing with the opportunities presented to him, he did nothing with developing personal growth, he continued to stay in a zone that he was comfortable with and, in my opinion, learnt nothing.

Number 2 found himself, he found his passion and went with it, absorbing all he could to become better at what he did and to be a better person for it and received maximum benefit for his input and output.

Which one are you???
