Short and Sweet - Psychology of colour series – Yellow

I will always precede these discussions with the knowledge that how colour is perceived is subjective, cultural and learned as well as instinctive.

This means that even though research has been undertaken on the basics, the nuances of subjective interpretation can often outweigh the set-in stone precepts.

The colour yellow can often be perceived as a joyful colour, it can represent happiness, joy, excitement, wealth, warmth, Freshness and youthfulness.

Yellow will often get used in promotional material in products associated with speed, freshness, Youth and work quite well in theses environments.

However Yellow can also be seen as a depressing colour, put yellow and black together and can get associated with Suicide. Even cancer foundations use yellow as their primary colour.

Even though yellow is a strong colour it can be interpreted in various different ways and when using yellow it pays to do some research and learn where it can be the most effective.

As a Visual Artist yellow can often be one of the most difficult colours to work with, from a design pint of view it is a difficult colour to balance. So, if you are going to use yellow in your designs, work with it until it not only feels right for you but also feels right for your test subjects.
