Short and Sweet - Do You Keep Up With The Times

Hi Folks

When I worked as an Arts Administrator, part of my job was writing funding applications, as well as approving funding applications. One of the things I learnt was that each year brought with it a whole new set of terminology, especially with Political correctness kicking in.

So each year I had to research the current terminology that was the flavour and favour of the year, I would then utilise this terminology in funding application to make sure that it was contextually up to date. This ensured a much higher success rate with application than if I had not.

I am proud to say that over a 13-year period of Being an Arts administrator I was instrumental in bringing over 75 million dollars into our region for Arts based projects. In a country that does not put its cultural endeavours at the fore this was quite an achievement

I am telling you this because when we are seeking approval = customers, to our endeavours we need to make sure that we are

  1. Keeping pace with the times
  2. being contextually appropriate to the products we sell

Point 1 means that we need to look at what is currently popular in the way language is used, what colour schemes are popular and what type of imagery might be more impactful for the product we are selling

Point 2 means if you are selling your list building endeavours to do with affiliate marketing or email marketing then don’t put really out there non appropriate images. E.g.: big fancy houses and big fancy cars do not sell list building efforts to do with marketing. Keep it real.

Again, I reinforce, do your homework, make sure that you research and take on board what is working and what is not. Good places to look are some of the major players in the online world.

Look at what they use. They spend the dollars in research. And you can research for Free just by observing what is working for them.

Always create more than one version of your promotion and split teat them, use a program like Hits Connect to do some Track9ing. Put them in the Gauntlet at Click Track Profit and get feedback. Don’t be afraid to ask opinions of your work.

Everyone has a different take on what they see, and everyone has valid input that can lead you to creating that masterpiece that will work for you and bring in massive amounts of leads.

And don’t just stick with that one, things move on, Times change and what was appropriate last year is most probably not for this year. When you see comments like, ‘Man that was so last year’ its because it is.

A big Hint. Your audience changes all the time

Huh... This is a big slap in the face for all those websites with the same design for the last 15 years... Times are changing, and also the design trends with it... We have to adapt, or...

My husband is a professor and would understand what you are talking about. Whatever research is necessary needs to be shrouded in the magic word of the season in order to get funding. Brilliant proposals can fail if they neglect using a stupid word like "diverse" or "sustainable"--even if the proposal would actually do more for those causes than some vapid project that gets funded because it hit all the correct leftist political buttons. Engineers are interested in reality, not politics, but a professor has to learn to appease the logic- and calculus-deficient political class.
