What Drives Mainstream Social Media?

What Drives Mainstream Social Media_.png

Social media!

It's changed everything...And given birth to amazing blockchains like HIVE. The dream of building something as awesome as this on a blockchain has fired up the imagination of so many...

However, we've never seemed to be able to get that mass adoption we've been looking for.

Sure onboarding can be improved. Marketing is always important...But I believe the biggest reason most haven't jump onto HIVE is because human beings are driven by something that onboarding and marketing can't deliver...

I've got no PHd in psychology, I'm just a dude who joined Twitter and Facebook literally when they launched...And hopefully, this little post can shed some light on what drives them and why in general, social media based blockchains have a tougher time onboarding new users...

Ego!

You see....Social media is built for the narcissist in each of us!

Think about it....

The 'currency' on traditional social media platforms are likes and comments...The more likes and comments you get on your post, the better you feel about your actions on it. There are the influencers that get paid for their content but for the everyday Jill and Joe, it's all about likes and comments...

For better or worse...That's what makes them 'tik' <------- See what I did there Tik Tok fans?

People love to be noticed and whether it's Facebook, Twitter, Instagram (especially) or Snapchat...People thrive off the number of likes and comments they get.

All coming from a deep rooted human desire to boost their ego.

We want the attention. We crave it.

Which is the same on HIVE...To an extent! And I'll dive into that now...

In a way, we all STILL want more likes (upvotes) here on HIVE...However, this is driven from a financial aspect rather than just being noticed for showing our bikini pics or six packs.

(Trust me, me in a bikini is legendary!!!)

Which is fine for some folks...

But with HIVE there is something deeper...At least from my experience here.

There is a true sense of belonging on HIVE. Which I have never found on any other social media platform...Ever.

I don't know about you, but I don't feel 'appreciated' or even warm and fuzzy when I'm scrolling down my Facebook feed. Sure it's cool to see what Grandma Jones is baking today and where Cousin Bob took the kids on vacation last year...But the real reason I think we're all on traditional social media is to...Feed the egos.

When I put a post of my latest blog post up on Facebook pointing to HIVE...I might get a half a dozen likes...My ego is crushed LOL

Jon_Olson2.png

But if I put a pic of my kid's birthday party up....115 likes plus...I feel 'loved' LOL

Jon_Olson.png

Weird....

But again....HIVE seems deeper than that to me.

I put those same posts up on HIVE, I get engaging comments and awesome support from the community. And when I put a post about my kid's first birthday up...SAME THING!

I get very similar engagement and awesome support!

hgfdd.png

(149 upvotes...The comments are there, but a little lower than normal.)

Jon_G_Olson_jongolson_PeakDhh.png

(A little lower upvotes, but a boost in comments!)

Hive truly is...Remarkable!

The sense of belonging is fantastic. The censorship resistance. The ability to build a brand and develop long time relationships here....Is just awesome!

Look, I can't judge anyone...Some people love posting their pics up on social media for the likes. For the ego boost. For whatever floats their boat...And that's fine.

But on the blockchain....It just feels different.

I think once we bridge the gap between giving people a sense of belonging with a little touch of ego boosting...We'll bring something to the world that has never yet been seen...

Until then...

I'm not joining TikTok!!!!!

And I'll still use traditional social media to highlight how amazing HIVE is....Ego or not, my message will always be:

Everyone should jump onboard HIVE!

You are right Jon ego is what drives most social media spaces. Hive is different and it is going to take more time for folks to adapt to a new way of looking at social media before we can have mass adaption.

Yeah, need to find that bridge tho. I think it's a combo of everything...Not just a traditional angle and not just for rewards.

Great points. The sense of belonging and ownership is palpable here. On Facebook, there is no such thing. I'm member of several Facebook groups, some having tens of thousands of members and I discuss local events and issues there. That has some value but those relationships are transient and there is no sense of belonging in any of it. I do have a number of friends on Facebook, mostly people I know from real life but using Facebook feels like using some sort of group chat application. It's very different on Hive in the ways you mention. My account, my followers and my stake are a piece of digital real estate.

Yup, great points too...I literally use facebook for informing my customers of what i'm doing on HIVE and keeping up with family and friends...No real 'community' building there as it feels like it's being built here

Most of social media content is exist to tell other that "How awesome we are" .
Some people really put lot of effort(or correctly ,risk their lives) for just getting a perfect picture that can be posted in facebook, twitter etc.

Yeah exactly...That's the truth. It's all about 'me' on social media lol

Great points, now the real question is why are people on Facebook despite not feeling that they belong?

Because that's where Grandma Jones and Cousin Bob are ;)

Or we just grow old on the platform and then it will be solved.

HIVE has communities that can boost in the future and bring influencers on specific areas. Marketing might be needed for this but so could be one tweet from a celebrity to take everything viral. And is in our power to try to bring as many influent people pn the platform as possible.

But I wonder how a HIVE conference would look like and what it could bring. It has now freedom so will it thrive?

I remember when the previous blockchain was at all time highs..>We had some pretty big content creators come on board...But it didn't last, because I guess they only wanted the returns and didn't have any desire to build community here...I think this is a much better longterm strategy myself :)

Indeed that perished in time but hopefully all can learn from mistakes. Working together is the way to do it and one more thing that we need is to evolve technological beside social.

Great post. A thing I noticed as well and have proven is that there are two different kinds of likes. There are likes that actually like the content and there are popularity likes. What I mean by that is some content will get liked even if is trash, if is posted by someone who is well known.

For the most part I always try to ignore the "who" and focus on the "content" itself. That can be easier said than done I know. If its good, its good, regardless if someone got one hundred followers or a million followers. I also understand that, you are going to miss it sometimes because you just can't please everyone all the time.

I know some say, "well if you provide quality content the popularity will come" but that is not always the case as I am sure you are fully aware. Some people get noticed more than others, or faster than others, as to why, that is a million dollar question there.

Instagram removed the like count awhile back, well at least made it less visible. It was believed to have a huge negative impact on a lot of people, mainly those suffering from depression which I understand.

Personally, I backed out of several social media platforms, mentally, it was just too much.

Yeah I haven't even tried my hand at a bunch of the more popular new ones...I just like where I feel there is value being added from both sides...HIVE to me is that place :)

If you ask for my opinion (or not, but I will still tell you... lol), I think that FB (or any other social media platform) didn't create a successful community, which we have done in a certain way on the HIVE...

Tbh, there are earning incentives here, and people are creating content for upvotes, and maybe that is a good thing... As EVERYONE can earn by creating, while on "standard" old-time networks, ONLY the BIGGEST earn real $$$ and those at the end of the food chain are feeding their ego... which sounds contradictory, but can be a case... lol...

and thanks for this post as it triggered a great idea for my next vlog... :)

That's the best part about HIVE...We can actually grow here and be rewarded as we do. Then someone who may have given up on traditional social media, has the confidence to keep going and growing here.

I never felt like there was a real community on Facebook and definitely not Instagram. To me those were random comments that sometimes generated comments. He I can get involved, whether participant or follower, in real conversations where I frequently learn something.

Oh guaranteed they are on Instagram. Bots everywhere there.

And that's a great point too..I truly believe there must be value given and received in a thriving social community.

I use FB to keep in contact with my family and what they are up to, also to say Hi to some friends. I really dont do much with social media.
