How Important Is Engagement?

How Important Is Engagement_.png

I have been looking forward to making this post all week....

A few things before I dive in...One, I'm all in on HIVE. This new home of ours, in my opinion, represents everything that is great and everything that CAN be great about a blockchain experience.

It's built by a community, for a community however there are some things we should really address if we wanna take HIVE to another level.

Take a look at this image I pulled from the trending page of the 'other blockchain'...

Trending posts — Steemit 6.png

That's super low engagement...

Add up the comments on the top 10 posts on it and you come up with...

71 total comments....On 10 posts!

Sure you can debate all you want about what deserves to trend and what doesn't but still....71 comments on the top 10 posts. :(

Combine this with the recent news that their flagship application has gone from a top 3 app to 10th (via StateOfTheDapps.com) tells me that when you don't focus on the community....You have a problem!

So what about HIVE...

How are we doing when it comes to engagement on the trending posts...

Trending posts — Hive.png

Pretty cool to see this huh? We've more than doubled the comments on our trending page...

This is fantastic and I'm excited to see it!

It shows that the community is very supportive of this project however we still don't see this kind of support for everyone on HIVE.

That being said, I don't expect everyone's posts to have 65 comments on them or even come close to the trending page. However I feel like sometimes we look down on branding HIVE (or the old blockchain) as a place where 'content creation' is valued!

You see...Here's the simple truth;

People want to feel valued!

And while I am not saying we should all write 20 comments an hour on other people's content, perhaps we should make an effort...Just to comment a little bit more :)

I did that whole 5-500-5000 formula years ago on the old blockchain and it started with...5 engagements (comments) a day!

I know I need to personally do a better job of engaging here and I think we can all improve!

So I'm going to step up my game going forward...Be the change I want to see in the world :)

Let's see what can happen when the members of this community...Feel valued!

I believe it'll do a few things;

  1. Retain more members! When they feel valued, they'll stick around!
  2. Increase their exposure to blockchain 'tech' (which makes them more confident!)
  3. Perhaps...Even turn a brand new content creator into an investor on HIVE!

I know that's how I started...

I just wanted to build my reputation and portfolio of content on a blockchain, I believed it was the future of everything...And because of that, I've brought my businesses here. I have invested in HIVE. And will continue to talk about how important content creation is here on the blockchain!

But I believe that it begins with members of HIVE feeling valued! This doesn't require an upvote, this requires a thoughtful comment or two on their posts!

And that's something we can all do a better job at!

Great post Jon and something I could be better at my self. I do up vote a lot but should comment more. Will have to do that thanks for the reminder.

The problem is too much circle jerking on this blockchain and the engagement is worst than steem, to be honest.

I think people are going to upvote their buddies, no matter what chain they are on. So it's up to us to build our own circles :)

But that being said, I'm more worried about the comments...The upvotes are just a bonus. As a content creator, there is nothing more important to me than the ability to engage with others.

I believe it is all about networking after you have created some content. It takes me hours to come up with the stories and advice to post and a good amount of agonizing to make sure it is palatable and structured properly. Then, there is little engagement and random rewards between $.04 and a couple bucks.

I just need to keep at it and engage more.

I think we all do. And this is by no means pointing the finger at anyone...That being said, I'm pretty sure I'm pointing it at myself LOL

I know we can all improve, that's part of the journey :)

I need to allocate my time more wisely to have more time to comment..I also go mostly for the upvote..Now I "punish" myself with the post tab open until I go for the comment then I have a bunch of tabs open and go crazy! So better comment and close and move on to the next!

What comes first right....The vote or the comment. I truly believe when we get the conversations going and they are productive, you can attract the votes.

But to me, they have always been a bonus. I love getting them, dont get me wrong, but I'm not owed a thing here.

That being said, I will upvote as many engagements as I can LOLOL

So many people get discouraged when they don't get upvotes on comments. Find posts you want to comment on. Then it doesn't matter if you get upvotes. Love the thoughts above.

Agreed...And I mean, the benefit of having tribes on HIVE is that an upvote might only get you a few percentage points of a full HIVE token...But on a tribe it's worth quite a bit more.

So for me, it's all about the comments :)

I was actually thinking that with all this physical distancing thing I would be super active here in #HIVE, but it turns out that I have actually been even more busy than before. The whole family at home thing burns your time in a glimpse of a week.

NZ is on the right path so, hopefully I will get my time back =) miss so much a road trip! damnnn

Yeah it's a perfect time for people to really fire up their accounts here and get noticed.

Only few will though. Which is a huge missed opportunity.

I see new users around thought 🤔. Need to go welcome some more. With all these fights around STEEM/HIVE, there is actually good opportunity and momentum to grab some looks.

I totally agree JonGo. Well thought out comments are the heart of this platform. Without it we die. People become less interested and they stop posting new content if they feel underappreciated and NOT valued. It goes beyond upvotes and making money on posts !

Really great post my man

Thanks man.

Yeah I agree...And I dont wanna sound egotistical. But for a content creator, engagement is the currency we desire.

I'm all for upvotes and love every bit of it...But we want people to discuss our ideas. Comment on our posts. That's what fuels a lot of us.

Engagement is key 😁

Good to see those more willing to interact migrating to Hive.

100% agree!

Without it, we really have nothing! Thanks for the comment man, I know engagement is something you are very passionate about.

Engagement on hive is one of my goals on hive because it helps you to express your idea to the author and share views together.

Keep crushing it! I think if we all try to at least make an effort to 'comment more' big things will happen here.

Comment and engagement is a great way to boost the level of activity on Hive.

The other thing I'd love to see more of is active participation in challenges and contest, and I'm not talking of those hosted by whales as those are guaranteed to get a lot entries. Sometimes I see challenges and activities hosted by people who get a measly handful of entries even though the reward is quite lucrative. I think someone won a Steemfest ticket Bangkok last yet coz there was only 3 or 4 entries!!

Every now and then I host one off small contest for fun because I enjoy doing that, but tbh it does get a bit demoralising when you end up with only a handful of responses. I'm sure quite a few people have experienced this before.

Anyway, rant over. Keep your engagement level up everyone as that's the only way to keep Hive alive!!

For sure....I love doing them...Heck, I think I'll do one later tonight!

Thanks for the reminder of how important these contests can be here to get people fired up!

Yep C&C, that is what we need more of, and great to see the comparison between Steem and Hive, that post with 65 comments had almost as many comments as all trending posts on Steem combined, says a bit about where the community is, stay awesome.

Man, I saw it...And it blew me away lol

While not perfect, I think engagement and commenting is MUCH better here!

Maybe the whole fear of commenting is coming from "old-style" social media... You SHOULD leave a comment on a post here if you appreciate the time and effort of the author... They/we (authors) are not "professionals" and a nice comment is more valuable than upvote... And.. both are FREE... upvote and comment...

So, do you appreciate your friends here?

Welp, I appreciate you man!!!!!!!

;)

Seriously though, I feel it's the least we can do. If someone comments, reply is the minimum.
