C’è un libro veramente bello di cui vorrei parlarvi. Si chiama “Longitudine” lettura consigliatissima.

Partiamo da una curiosità. Fino alla seconda metà del ‘700, nonostante fosse una tecnica già consolidata da tempo, navigare in realtà era pericolosissimo. I marinai erano “pazzi furiosi”, costretti a stare anche mesi su una nave, senza cibo adeguato e spesso esposti allo scorbuto (andate a vedere cosa provoca che è una roba che mi ha lasciato basito), ma la verità è che la cosa più difficile è calcolare dove si era in tal momento. Ovvero calcolare latitudine e longitudine. Se calcolare la latitudine era di per sé semplice, la longitudine ha richiesto uno sforzo internazionale coordinato di tantissimi astronomi a partire da Galileo, passando a Newton. E ciò ha portato a ben poco, se non a una profonda conoscenza delle stelle e dei pianeti che ci circondano.

Negli anni ’10 del XVIII secolo, dopo il disastro navale della Scilly dove morirono 2000 uomini, il parlamento britannico introdusse il Longitude Act, una sorta di concorso per chi fosse riuscito a risolvere lo spinoso problema del calcolo della Longitudine. Il premio era di 20.000 sterline, che se convertito in valuta attuale si aggirerebbe attorno ai 3.5 milioni di sterline.

Se per calcolare la longitudine molti guardavano le stelle, come ad esempio gli astronomi, potenzialmente questo dannoso problema poteva essere ovviato dalla presenza di un orologio in una nave, a patto che questo segnasse sempre l’ora esatta, poiché se avesse sbagliato anche solo di pochi secondi, questi si sarebbero tramutati in molte miglia nautiche di differenza e alla morte di molte persone.

Infatti questa è la storia di un orologiaio, tale John Harrison che nel corso di decenni portò grandissime rivoluzioni nell’ambito dell'orologeria. Non aggiungo altro perché è veramente una lettura consigliata.
