Curious Minds Debunk Real Lies
Amongst the many lies I was told as a kid, there was this particular lie my mom told me in a bid to stop me from making noise at night.

As a kid, I was very loud and I loved singing, especially at night. At the time, I didn't classify it as noise because it was something I liked doing and to top it up, I liked the way my voice echoed at night. I would remain mute all day and at night, I would sing at the top of my voice, disturbing the whole neighbourhood. I'm still surprised that none of my neighbours had told me to shut up during any of my singing sessions.
My mom had noticed this habit at an early stage and one day, she walked into my room, sat me down and said
"Do you know that if you sing at night, the dark forces would take away your voice?"
I was already afraid of the dark and the thought of the "dark forces" taking away my voice sent chills down my spine. My mom didn't end there, she went on to narrate a story.
"You know that boy in the neighbourhood who used to sing also?"
I nodded in assertion
"Do you still hear him singing? No. Because the dark forces had taken his own voice. If you continue singing, you will be next".
After the little talk with my mom, I didn't even want to sing again. I was terrified to say the least. I resorted to humming during the day and staying mute at night; I didn't want to take any chances.
Fast forward to two years later, I couldn't take it anymore. I remember telling myself that night that " if the dark forces took away my voice, then so be it". I put on my headset and started listening to music. I started with gospel songs of course to chase the dark forces away. Soon enough, I was singing cellular songs at the top of my voice once again.
I took off the headset from time to time to check if my voice was still intact and yes it was. Honestly, I was very ready for the "dark forces" that were supposed to take my voice away that night. I wondered how it would work. Would the force take the voice when I'm asleep? Or when I'm done singing? When?
That night's singing session came to an end and I slept with one eye closed, hypothetically. I woke up the next morning and the first thing I did was to check if I could still talk. To my utmost surprise, I could. My voice didn't go anywhere and I could still sing. By this time, my voice had gotten better and my singing wasn't classified as noise anymore.
This didn't take away the fear I had for the "night forces" though. I was still very much careful about how I sang at night even when I proved that such forces weren't real.
It was at this point that I realised that it was a lie; a white lie to be precise. My mom could have easily walked up to me and told me never to sing again but this would have crushed my upcoming Celine Dion spirit and so, she decided to take another approach. Unfortunately or fortunately for her and my neighbours, it took me about two years to debunk this lie but after I had debunked the lie, they had to put up with my singing.
Ps: the boy in the neighbourhood who had allegedly lost his voice didn't lose anything, he only reduced the tempo of his songs. I didn't know this until later because I never really used to talk to my neighbours.

We all have heard these things. Mine was singing in the night attracting snakes. But in all these things were there to mold us. They knew we were afraid and this was their way of making us obey without being harsh.

I still sing at the top of my voice sometimes but not as often as I used to😅. Old habits die hard.

The approach your mum used was very clever. At least it got you to stop singing for two years. Two years of sweet silence at night.
This made me remember the time my mum noticed that I and siblings were being careless with our pens. So she decided to lie to us that if we misplaced one pen she would give us a drug to swallow that would make us vomit thousands of pens. We were terrified😅.
That was the last time we ever misplaced a pen.

The kind of stories our parents tell us ehn. I was told that singing in the bathroom at night would make my guardian angels curse me. Ahh! Today, when I remember, I will just shake my head.
