On December 1st, a significant political event shook the structures in El Salvador. Nayib Bukele, the president who boldly established Bitcoin as a legal means of payment in the country, made a surprising decision to step down. This drastic change came after the country's Legislative Assembly approved his temporary departure, allowing him to focus fully on preparing for his re-election campaign scheduled for 2024. Claudia Rodríguez de Guevara took over the presidency on an interim basis, and is expected to hold the post until June 2024, when the next general elections are expected to be held, scheduled for February 2024.

The peculiarity of the current political situation was highlighted by Héctor Silva, candidate for mayor of San Salvador, when he said that with Bukele's departure, we will have a president in charge for whom nobody voted. Bukele, who took office in June 2019, was known for his audacious initiatives, including the notable reduction in El Salvador's homicide rate, which was among the highest in the world at the time of his inauguration. In addition, his pro-cryptocurrency stance was evident when, in September 2021, he advocated the adoption of Bitcoin as the official means of payment, a move that culminated in the conception of a volcano-powered Bitcoin City in the country.

Despite his success in significantly reducing crime rates during his time in office, critics have not hesitated to point out that the Salvadoran government's anti-gang actions have violated human rights. A report issued by the United Nations human rights office in March denounced practices of mass arrests since 2022, with allegations of mistreatment and deaths in custody.

The president of El Salvador, according to the rules, is elected for a five-year term. Before September 2021, the country's constitution stated that presidents had to wait a period of ten years before seeking re-election. However, at this crucial point, El Salvador's Supreme Court ruled that a president could henceforth serve two consecutive terms, opening up new horizons for Salvadoran politics.

With Bukele temporarily sidelined, the stage is being set for the next stage of the democratic game in 2024. The electoral campaign will inevitably be shaped by the legacy of the previous president, highlighting both successes in reducing crime and criticism of possible human rights violations. Bukele's legacy, with his pro-cryptocurrency policies and bold decision regarding Bitcoin, will continue to resonate in El Salvador's future choices.
