Maybe itยดs just me, maybe I am the only one that loves to discover new music....but this is a big BUTT:
I do not have the time to go out and discover all those great artists that are not pushed by my algorithm.
Maybe I am lying maybe I do not make the time, maybe I got lazy and let my ears be fed by lazy algo tunes I am gonna like for sure.
Yes, I am lying, I am just addicted to discovering new cool songs and bands. Probably because I used to be a DJ, but I am also getting older, so I stopped looking for a while....and found that I missed those amazing disc coveries.
So I got back in the game.
I started digging holes. Large youtube rabbit holes that can swallow me whole and take me on a musical adventure. Take me on a trip, clicking through songs I never heard of, artists I did not know existed, using keywords, and looking for those songs that have fewer views.
What I found was just sick, there are so many gems out there. I went on so many musical trips, down the hole and into a space filled with gems.
I started documenting these trips in my Midnight Gems Sessions, of which I did at least 150. Along the way, I found that it was so much fun that I would also create the YT playlist just in case anyone would want to take the same trip twice or without having to read all my blah blah.

If I am too lazy I found very little on HIVE that still tickles my pickle, except for @seckorama itยดs very hard to find some cool sets of gems.
Of course, we have the #TTT but that is too little and often too predictable. So please drop your favorite playlist and mix-tape makers in the comments.
Algorithms Kill Curiosity
Am I lying when I say my playlists are hand-picked? Guess that depends on how you look at it. Compared to those that digest all their Spotify and YT suggestions...my sets are definitely not algorithmic.
On the other side, yes I do click the YT suggestions shown at the right and dive down that rabbit hole. But I almost never take the first five picks and also try to avoid any pick with more than a million views already.
In addition, I change my course several times by using new keywords and/or adding songs from memory.
Hence I am influenced, we all are. But I do not allow the Algo to get in the driver's seat of my musical trips.
Are You Listening Now?
So I called you out on not listening Dear Reader, but I am not disappointed. I am no artist, not here to pay my bills. I am here because I feel that need....the need for discovery.
In my teens, I would listen to the radio at night, because that was the time they would play music that was not on daytime radio. I was introduced to Iggy Pop, Franck Black, REM, Nirvana, Kยดs Choice, Radiohead, and many more.
I dreamed about doing the same, finding cool tunes and just slinging them into the ether. Little did I know we would have this beautiful landscape of Spotify and Youtube in the not-so-far future.
Also, I did not know that most people grow up and remain stuck musically in those bands & tunes from their teens. They allow themselves to be put to sleep by the Algo that feeds them what they already know.
While for me I get a kick out of finding crazy good tunes that do not sound like anything I heard before and combine those gems with songs that are just awesome.
Bottom Line
Every week I get into my little spaceship, put that headset on and take off. Passing by all those beauties floating in the YT space. Hunting them down, capturing their awesomeness into a mix-tape, sharing that, and setting them free again.
And maybe just maybe these Midnight Gems Sessions are found someday by someone that was looking for it. Maybe they will end up where my Mix-Tapes from the 90s ended up. All those mix-tapes I made back then ended up in a bin.
Why?
Because I couldnยดt share them for free.
Now the good thing about the future is I can share them for free...but in this future nobody is listening๐
And in all honesty, I donยดt mind, I might have a weird taste in music....
I might like the horrible stuff only.
In that case, itยดs all good. But just in case itยดs me not promoting myself properly I decided that I will do some promo posts in the next couple of months.
