Midnight Gems -Your Free Mix-Tape Show - E 52 "This Is Not A Fairy Tale"

image.png

For those of you who are new to my MidNight Gems series. Welcome to this nightly trip on which we will uncover & recover some amazing songs & covers.

Last week was wonderful. We started oh so slowly and had such a great build-up in the set. Ending it with an Epic bang, and that is what I like, going slowly from one genre to the next, not noticing the change till you look at the first and last song and go; Hell how did we get from there to here? Tonight I want to do that once again, different genres but aiming at that sweet sequence just lifting you from one song into the next one.

Let´s be me transparent, I don´t know what I had until it´s gone. And I did not know this next band existed till I found it. That happens, but it´s a shame that I could have enjoyed these guys for 6 years already. This is Coldplay, Keane, and Portishead all rolled into one.

Amber Run - 5AM

With only 32 views on her own channel it made more sense that I didn´t know this next song, but her voice sounds so familiar. It tickles my brain, telling me it reminds of ....and then the brain goes blank. I probably need to listen to this song another ten times but I will find it. Meanwhile listening to this song on repeat is not a crime.

Yasmin Coe - Promise Not To Care

Now these guys should not come as a surprise they were featured in one of my 2024 sets already with a different song, but as I love dream synth-pop stuff with female voices they are a pleasure to add to the set

NIGHT TAPES - LONER

Sometimes I even confuse myself, Wye Oak sounds like a band I should know. The fit my niche perfectly, and I would bet my butt on the fact I played them before, but it seems I did not. Well first time for everything right?

Wye Oak - Civilian

For a couple of seconds, they made me think of The Last Dinner Party but that changed quickly, they are not. Not that it´s a bad thing we can not all be perfect, but they are definitely unique....in the good way.

The Ophelias - Black Ribbon

If I close my Eyes I hear the kids the Breeders & MagnaPops got emulating their parent's sounds in a very now way. This really sounds so old school, almost too good as if their parents made them do it. Damn, how I miss the late nineties sometimes.

Horsegirl - "Anti-glory"

This next one is very special for me I would love to discover so much more of this. Living in Spain, and loving music I do hear a lot of Spanish pop and Latin stuff. There is a lot Spanish rock and metal, especially from the old days.

But I have not found anything like this before, this is not alternative, not screamo, not pop-rock, but a perfect cocktail con corazon.

Calva Louise - Con Corazón

I had to think long and hard before I added this one. What The Fulf am I listening to? A Linklin Park clone? Fall Out Boy 2.0 the AI sessions? It has all the hooks to make it too commercial, but I could not stop listening. So you tell me, are they produced by the industry or on their way to really creating their own sound?

Smash Into Pieces - Heroes Are Calling

Maybe having your own sound is overrated, I mean this next band sounds like almost any other goth symfo metal band...almost. Because those vocals are just too good, like Within Temptation good. Now Lahna is probably from the Benelux which would explain part of it. Still they stand out from the crowd if you ask me,,,,and no this is not a fairy tale.

October Changes - Sleeping Beauty

Encore

Now this is what I like. looking like the next goth symfo metal band, but sounding like Hair rock meets Foo Fighters, with a singer that looks like Marilyn Manson's Pretty Sister....this sounds too good to be true...this must be a fairy tale.

Snow White In The Dark - This Is Not a Fairytale

Riddle Me This

Guess What, my riddle has been solved. You are too late to make a easy dollar, better luck next time!

What the fluff is Midnight Gems?

Somewhere lost in time, trying to escape out of the rabbit hole back into the rat race there is a vacuum..... that´s the place where midnight gems are found.

My Midnight Gems will try to uncover & recover those beautiful songs that nobody ever noticed or might have been forgotten.

Who the fluff am I?

Being a former DJ playing about everything and having an uncompleted study of radio journalism. I have been wanting to do this for years...Thought about it many nights and guess now it´s time to finally take it to the streets.

Hope you enjoyed this well-known wave of fantastic music and that you still feel like joining me on the next Midnight Gems Session coming soon.

I must say the best part about reading and listening to your MidNight Gems is that it always offers me different genres and musical experiences. And I always have a new song to add to my playlist. Plus, you are always very very thoughtful when you are curating these songs for us to listen to. Of course, I am always looking forward to the surprises and hidden songs waiting to be discovered. Did I have a favorite? Oh, yes, Wye Oak - Civilian 😍😍😍😍
